  1. I am in Mammoth and have been since Wed. the 7th. Temps are hitting low 50's on the hill. If you get out for first chair Stump Alley and the runs off of it are acceptable and I would rate the snow on a 1-5 scale for carving (5 being best) at a 3-4 depending on the run. Snow gets better as you go higher but those steeps are beyond my skill level. Here's to hoping for a "Miracle March"!
  2. I rode June on Saturday 3-8. It was a bit icy and did not exude a lot of confidence when setting an edge. Weather was fantastic however. I think a good groom could dial it in though.
  3. Damn, I just got back from a week of vacation. Figures as much haha. I will see if I can pull it but will be a very looooong shot. Keep you posted. Regardless that is great news!
  4. Glad to see the site back online! Joe, was great meeting and riding with you and your buds at Mammoth recently. Sorry I missed Mr. Garrow and the Huntington Beach "storm trooper" ha, how those hard boots treating you Lance? I was able to locate another 188 Burner and as of today it should be shipped out. Hit me up with any other dates that may arise and I will attempt to get up there to share some turns with you guys. Free lunch to anyone who can help me tame the dragon that is the heelside turn grrrrr... Darren
  5. "I will be dabbling in the hardboot arena with some semi new gear." Taking the plunge, no slope will be safe from the devastation you will bring to the hill. Let me know how it goes brother. You da man! As for riding, a dismal start to the season as we all know. I am going to Mammoth on Feb 8th for a few. Keep the faith. Darren
  6. Mother nature has blessed mammoth with fresh snow, I am heading up tomorrow. for 4 nights. Will just miss you guys, damn! If anybody is riding Tue-Thur let me know. D
  7. Hey George, good seeing you up there. Sorry I could not share some runs with you. As it turns out on the first run of competition (California Fire-Police Winter Olympics) I blew out the left ankle. Freak washout on toe side on an icy patch got me. I limped thru that day and the following day for GS and Super G but had to pull the plug after that as it was just to weak and I had no toe side control/leverage. On the brighter side I took home two Gold Medals for those events. I am back up in March and also hope to make the session as well. FYi my latest jones is for a Kessler with a race plate. You ridden a plated board yet? It would be a hell of a big purchase though as board alone in $1500 and surely well over $2100 when all said and done...Yikes! We shall see.

  8. good recommendation, those look legit, thanks!
  9. I rode my first carving board at Mammoth Mountain. This was probably in the late 80's/early 90's. Back then there were a couple shops that carried carving boards. "Storm Riders" and "Wave Rave". I was wearing Raichlee Snowboarders (which I still own) and renting a PJ asym, good times ha ha. Back then I saw a few other carvers but I only get 10 or so days a year so sightings of fellow carving folk were slim. I still ride Mammoth and am typing this while on vacation in Mammoth now. From then to now I have seen an increase in carving. There are no more alpine rentals in Mammoth, save a few shorty Burton Primes but they offer no bindings or boots so I think they just keep them around for museum potential. Point being I see carvers nearly every time now. Also while I still get stares or questions when I show up early on a split tail SIMS Burner, I also get a thumbs up or accolades from strangers who recognize an alpine board and often comment on how artistic an alpine rider looks when laying down clean arcs. In summary I see more riders and more people recognize the specific discipline of how we ride. I hope this is a continuing trend and we can continue to grow the sport. If not I will still ride with a smile knowing I have found the purest way to ride a snowboard as I continue to hone my ability on my 10 days a year. Let there be arcs!
  10. Greetings All! So I have a size 13 foot. I currently use Head Stratos Pros (orange ones). I am wondering if anyone knows if the sole length of the different manufacturers varies enough to consider buying one over the other. With such a large foot angles can get tricky and trying to ride a narrow board can cause steeper angles still. Thanks in advance D
  11. Porta Pros are amazing. I am on my second pair. I currently have the Sporta Pros. They are adjustable and can have the band on top the head or on the neck, so may be same model as you. Overall they are the best sounding and most bass responsive I have listened to and you cannot beat the price. Was just not sure if they will sync with the helmet, will let you know. For those reading this both models are exceptional and the have over 1200 4 star or better reviews on Amazon. Plus for 23 bucks you just cannot beat them!!!
  12. I know I know, I should not be using headphones when making wide sweeping turns but I just got my first helmet, and if by chance I wanted to listen to some relaxing Gregorian chants, was wondering if anyone had any feedback on what the best sounding headphones/ear buds are that are helmet friendly (Smith Vantage Helmet). Thanks in advance. D
  13. Nekdut, thanks for starting this up. I can make the 9th & 10th. Darren
  14. What's up brother, so a couple things, first I owe you some money from the June Mountain session last season. Secondly, what do you think of organizing a covert tailgating get together at Mammoth. The Stump Alley lot perhaps?

I am up at Mammoth currently and bumped into Andre and met JP the same day. Amazing conditions!

Hope all is well with you and the family

    Regards,

    Darren

(The Cop) in case you were wondering who this was ha

  15. My first trip up is January 12th for 4 nights. I am jonesin pretty good right now as it sounds like it is pretty good up having a decent base and then another foot the other day overnight. I was all set to do a banzai run and then opted for the overtime work instead to help pay for my chilly habit. I then have a trip in Feb for 5 nights and another in March for 4 nights. I will of course try to get up there for some quick trips also. I really need to get a freeride powder board. My previous has blown and edge so I am completely without. I need a super tanker wide or maybe a custom donek I can wear hardboots on.

  16. Wanted to congratulate you on your member photo (the one where you are spraying snow), as good a picture as I have seen on here!!!

  17. Hey Rolf, saw you were selling your longboard Donek, bitter sweet decision I am sure. Anyhow just saying hello, hope all is well with you and yours. Maybe we will bump into each other at Mammoth this year. I was very bummed to hear they closed June after you introduced me to Gunsmoke last year, I was gonna make it my go to spot. 2013/2014 here we come!

    Regards,

    Darren

  18. What's up George, you know if I could just drop 150 pounds I would grab that old Rossi Throttle, I loved riding that thing way back when! Hope all is well. Darren
  19. Yes, if June reopens as planned I will be "all in". If Mammoth gets another drop I will be heading up ASAP. Otherwise my first scheduled trip is not til January 12th. Not sure I can ever go south cal boarding again, we will see...
  20. What he fails to mention above and for the record is that he can carve a freeride board like few others I have seen. Your all soul brother! I know it has been awhile since your last confession for your penance you must ride hard plates for one week ha
  21. Are these a matching set? I ask as one of the bails is red. Thanks
  22. My bad I failed to completely read your initial post/list. I saw the details. I initially only saw the pic and was immediately smitten ha. I have a 188 currently and am constantly fearful that I will snap the tail. Really like the purple graphics on yours though. Admittedly, the first time I rode the 188 I went 40 feet and fell over ha. About an hour later I was loving it. It has been a season and a half now and I really like that thing but find I have to hang it up after the early morning as it gets to crowded to push it or expand my control over it. Will keep you posted if I can find that spare dough in the couch cushions... D
  23. Just loggin in this season! Was wondering what the ridability is on the SIMS burner and how much you are lookng for. Regards, D
  24. Damn! That is crazy, looks like tailgating in the parking lot it is.
