Ouch! Sorry about that, John. Here’s hoping you heal up soon.

I believe the medical term for my hip is FUBAR. Or as the imaging report says, “severe osteoarthritis of the left hip with complete loss of superior joint space, osteophytes and subchondral cystic change.”

Very sorry to hear what sounds like a diagnosis requiring a joint replacement BUT, even though you’re not interested but I am, I will run that diagnosis by Dr Dan Nelson during his radio show next Sunday.
Dan is an MD with a PhD in pain management and is one Dr in a group with 14 orthopedic surgeons. Dan has specialized in stem cell treatment and pain management for 30 years and he sometimes can help patients avoid unnecessary surgery.
You’ll get his opinion even though you don’t want it.

  2. A lot of questions and things to consider and many on this forum much better to deal with this but I will offer my $0.02 as time permits.
I wear nothing smaller than Mens size 13 Nikes, my foot measures 28cm and UPZ RC 10 mondo 28 with a Deelux 131 liner, with minor modifications make my boots nearly as comfortable as bedroom slippers. I’ve never worn softboots and went directly to my UPZs from ski boots. To be continued.
I have a fairly narrow and low volume foot and a narrow heel and that is partly why I prefer UPZs over Deeluxes (I’ve tried both and size 28 is correct for me in both but my heel wouldn’t stay down In Deelux). It sounds like you have a higher volume foot so Deelux may be better for you and you may prefer their thinner 141 liner as well.

Back around 2000 I used my Solomon SX91 ski boots for carving and they actually worked pretty well.

  3. My UPZ 10s are extremely comfortable and I’m going to start next season riding my new Nidecker 158L at 35/20 instead of my usual 55/55 on my Thirsts and Coilers. I tried a little Korean carving with this setup at the end of last season on a 159  Lib Tech Dynamo demo and it went well except the tighter turning burned my quads out more quickly than usual.

I dont know what the area you live in is like but Id suggest something more like XC or Gravel riding if you want to avoid cars. 🙂

I also want to avoid going over the handlebars!

I’m going for Mario’s leg blasters!

Interesting article from many years ago about eccentric and concentric training for the legs, and the development of the leg blaster. No need for any gym equipment. I've posted this before and have incorporated this into my early season training as well.  They hurt.

    Really appreciate this, big Mario!

  6. I appreciate the fitness and strength of all of you serious cyclists but I consider cycling, if done with cars around, to be an extremely risky behavior especially for a 78 year old and I want a weight bearing quad strengthening exercise so I might invest in a squat rack.

I live in Canada.  What some US radio show doc says has no effect on my medical choices.  Both of the surgeons I've consulted with are highly respected and well qualified.

A hammer sees everything as a nail…surgeons do surgery!  You may very well NEED surgery BUT I still wouldn’t let an orthopedic surgeon near me with a knife without at least discussing it with Dan, whether I lived in Canada, India, the US or Timbuktu or whether I had insurance or not!

Doc said I could run on it if I want because it’s not possible to damage it any further. It’s severe arthritis, there is no soft tissue left in the joint.

Tune into KIRO FM 97.5 Sundays 8:00-9:00 PDT and call Dr Dan Nelson on his radio show. If you have a cd of your MRI or could read the radiologist’s notes to him it would help. Google him. ProOrtho in Kirkland, WA.
I wouldn’t let any surgeon near any of my joints without getting Dan’s opinion.

Not sure which model. Look on YouTube for people carving them, or in the Softboot Carving Worth Watching thread.

Thanks. I’m planning on starting out next season on a 158-160, 30-26-30ish, 35/25 using my UPZ RC10s and will watch a few “softboot carving worth watching” vids the evening before my first day. I tried that last year on a demo 159W Lib tech Dynamo and I had a ball although the tight turning wore me out pretty fast (working on quad strength this off season).
Thinking of taking Pat Donnley’s advice and trying a 158 Nidecker Blade.

"I was enjoying watching you carve." said the young Swedish snowboard instructor who stopped beside me at at Cardrona today.

Sadly, a male Swedish snowboard instructor. He's got a Korua planned as a carving board purchase in the near future.

Must be my new dark red Marmot jacket/trou. I've been getting a few "We were watching...." on the chair lift rides.

Korua??? What type of board and what specs?

  11. I don’t count race slarving or EC in what I like in carving. I lump all the rest together, i.e. getting knees within about one foot of the snow, linking pencil lines and controlling speed by sweeping back up the hill if necessary…that’s just me and my interest other than pow!

  12. I was walking on Sugar Beach Maui today and struck up a conversation with a girl who says she and her family stay for a week at Snowmass every winter. I asked if they ever skied Buttermilk to which she replied, “that’s very much a beginner area!”
No wonder some of you guys like the carving there so much, i.e. probably perfect grooming and perfect slopes for linking up pencil lines.
I might even be able to carve well there if I have pegged the terrain and conditions right!

As Mammoth is closing next weekend this reply still belongs to this topic 21-22 season. After several weeks to learn snowboarding all over again,I got idea got shorter and a bit wider board and try it still this season. I finished my chemo a couple weeks ago and went thru 3rd surgery on my eye last Thursday. So now I want try new toy Nidecker Spectre 157. The board is 22 cm wide. I am running shallower angles to help me with right” blind” side. It looks like decent all mountain board. I got regular one, they also makes carbon version. Going down chair 23 or just jump into Climax would be rather ambitious, but I am so anxious just hit the slopes one more times this season. Let see how the board will work. It looks nice.DDB4AD75-BFB2-4F1A-A2E1-A91C6EF8B86D.jpeg.3a1ba758504f48abe4feb865e2d28b3b.jpeg

You’re a real inspiration, Ladia! I was feeling sorry for myself because a skier slammed into me causing a class 2 sprain of my Medial Colateral Ligament which will be fully healed by next season.
I wish for you a full health recovery and some great turns on your new board!

I think I might need one of these for the steep and deep in Jackson and to lay down some tight trenches on a groomer or two…mostly in my dreams!

Wouldn’t this be a good board for someone trying to emulate some of the Asian carvers in “Softboot Carving Worth Watching?”

First year carving. Boarded 23 years, but skidded until this year. Man it’s so addicting railing turns. Made it out over 40 times this year, just picked up a mint F2 Eliminator 166w and took it and my quiver to Moonstone for a last hurrah.

My last hurrah turned out to be an idiot cruise missile slamming into me an hour into the day. Knocked out instantly, didn’t make my next memory until 5 hours later in hospital. Made only a half dozen memories total from 1030 am till the next day.

Thankfully the concussion symptoms have been mostly mild, but I’ve been super careful/restful. So far the worst has been a very angry neck and back, still quite locked up 2 weeks after impact.

On the positive note, I’m still watching carving videos and can’t wait for next season. Also in contact with the legendary Bruce to get my first custom board.

Take care AIL crew and heal up good this summer.

Very scary…wishing you a speedy and complete recovery!

    Cute!  Nice and tight...

I've started teaching my daughter to carve.  I tell her: "First you learn the 'J' turn, then the 'C' turn and the 'S' turns, and finally the 'e' turn."

Yours is a beautiful example of the 'e'!   Thanks Bro

    Explain the ‘e’ turn.

And the ends are nicely rounded off!!!

Super interested in how this one rides in mixed conditions. Bruce was showing me his current press and the issue with going wider than 27cm or so. 29cm waist sounds like turning a freighter but I see Knapton going and love the theoretical idea….

I’m really excited that one of our custom board makers has stepped into this arena but I’d like to see more of a 155ish to 160ish, 30ish/26ish/30ish size for softboot carving.
