Wow!  A Patroller!   I'd like to hear his excuse for that!  ...but it sounds like he didn't own it and just BS'd the situation......correct?

I would have verbally assaulted him........and then reported him, probably to no avail!

You and me both Brother!!    These days I start getting nervous if I see the parking lots mostly full........cause you know there's an unknown quantity of drunk/stupid/arrogant  straight liners out there who's got my number!

The craziest thing is that our local ski hill has had a reputation of purposely refusing to stop reckless skiers/snowboards in all but the most heinous instances because they they think they are doing a public service:  "If the at-risk teenagers are at the hill screwing around, at least they aren't down in the town and getting into even bigger trouble."

  2. There once was a snowboarder named Dave Who loved to carve through the alpine snow With his board on the slope He carved with such hope Leaving a trail that was pure as the driven snow.

Tried as hard as I could but this is the spiciest limerick that it would serve up.

  3. Chatgpt is pretty cool!  I’ve asked it some pretty niche questions and got impressively correct (if at times superficial) answers.  It’s crazy how correct and in-depth it gets regarding comp-sci stuff.

Topaz Labs Video Enhance  ... Interesting, I shall take a look, because 360 footage is way less than 4k when cropped. Topaz must have a free version for testing. That embedded video isn't selling it though - it all looks out of focus to me. Am I missing something there?

Are you sure you had playback on 4k?  On my phone playback always defaults to 480p or something and looks like crap, but going into the settings and setting it to 4k is a huge difference I think.  Here are is a screen capture from youtube with the original material straight off the phone.

Here it is after processing through topaz labs.

The end result isn't maybe 35mm quality, but it is a dramatic improvement from the source imho.

This guy IMHO was a ripper before he adopted this style. He broke his femur last season using the body drag/outrigger technique by steering (orlack there of) into a bamboo pole/ropeline on the fringe. I get the huge sidecuts but laying on the snow or outrigger technique is just scary and asking for trouble. "don't pat the dog"

    No 👏 Outrigger👏 Technique👏

Sick rides!!!  I was sooo close pulling the trigger on a big Virus this year, but I trashed my MTB early this season.  One new frame later and my family is still eating rice and beans for dinner.

  6. I don't think think this is too surprising for anybody involved in snow sports or even summer sports for that matter.  When I first moved to Kongberg we were having winters with -30C weather, now we are pretty lucky to go under -10C.  It has been a loooooong time since natural snow was enough for the local bump and now the local dams are getting really low so running the snow cannons is going to be a more challenging prospect (we have had more rain than usual this year though which will help).  During the summer months, it is extremely obvious that a lot of the usual creeks and swamps have really dried up.  It IS awesome for mountain biking but extremely worrying for the planet!

  7. Hope nobody minds that I'm reviving this thread but I just have to give some props to a very cool (but relatively expensive at $200) video tool.  The Topaz Labs Video Enhance AI SW is pretty bloody impressive at upscaling both the picture resolution and framerate.  And when I say pretty bloody impressive, I mean this is like the spy movies where they zoom video into the license plate of a car from 5 miles away, press "enhance" and suddenly get a crystal-clear number.

The following edit is made off of some video I had posted on here a few years back, but I used the Topaz Labs SW to upscale the source material from 720p/24fps to 4k/240fps (but playback in the edit is at 60fps).  There are some artifacts here and there (high-speed movement in a relatively low source framerate is difficult) and the some of the upscaling lends it a bit of a cell-shaded look (but there are tons of parameters that can be tweaked).   The real upshot is that youtube's encoding doesn't slaughter 4k 60fps video like it does 720p/24fps.  (you can see the original source material (from kvitfjell) on the same youtube channel) for an example of what YT encoding does to low-rez video.

image.png.343f57673a812af39bac27a7b24801ca.png That is peak snow-sports season?!  Looks more like peak bike-park season.

I'm a little nervous about our local bump that just splashed out on a new high-speed 6-seater with wind-shield and heated seats.  Energy prices in Europe are going to skyrocket this winter and the water reservoirs that supply the snow cannons have been shrinking every year for the past 3 or 4 years.

Duuude!  I want me some of that!    Just imagine.... No worries (unless your racing)  about getting run over by straight liners!   You could carve up the whole lake and never have to look over your shoulder!     Wow

Does anyone know of a good way for the front rider to have the camera viewing the rear rider and be able to track him without seeing him?

I am blown away by the object tracking on the insta 360 one rs 360 module.  Will post a link to a video in a bit.

  11. I got Covid (along with wife, dad and mom) on our trip to the US to visit my parents.  I had it worse than everybody (which was really weird), +40C for about 3.5 days but no reaper story symptoms other than a really mild cough.  So I spent a bunch of time catching up on Peaky Blinders.  At least on our flight back to Norway every connection was delayed by the same amount so we didn't miss a single flight despite the airport chaos in Europe.

  12. The irony.  Climate change driven drought being told by a couple of guys assumedly idling their truck for hours along with hundreds of other trucks to get a couple hours of buzzing around lake mead.  I didn't watch the whole video; did they find any bodies in those barrels?

  13. Oooh bikes!  Love bikes!  I'm never sure which season I'm most looking forward to since I am fortunate enough to live close to some good snowboarding and gravity oriented mtb terrain.

Winter bike.  A cheap fatbike, but it gets me to work and back.  The past couple of winters there have been folks dragging car-tires while snow-shoeing in the woods behind my house which has made great conditions for a bit of light MTB action in between snowboarding sessions.

But my real love for biking is summer-time super-trail/enduro biking.  My 2020 Specialized Enduro was an absolute dream bike I built up from a second-hand frameset.  Pedals uphill better than a 170mm has any right to and was a scream downhill.  Everything about it was fan-effing-tastic, except for the material: carbon.  This was my 3rd full-squish bike and my second carbon bike.  Carbon seat-stay vs aluminum derailleur hanger:  the derailleur hanger is going to win everytime.  It has been a nightmare to get replacement parts.

    unnamed.jpg.320af4a04f3afc1bfe0f6785b1f66bae.jpg

Which brings me to my new bike: a RAAW Madonna.  Specialized hasn't been able to get me parts to fix the Enduro so I odered a Madonna frame from RAAW since it would take all of the kit from the Enduro and I've got a friend that really spoke highly of his Madonna.  I'm only three rides deep into this bike but I am loving everything about it.  I can really identify with the brand's goals: the mechanics of the bike are really well thought out from reliability and maintenance standpoints, the workmanship is top notch and the performance is uncompromizing, plus it aluminum.   While the Enduro was a sled that would do straight lines super fast regardless of the effort you put into it, the Madonna is more of a rider's bike.  In a straight line it is slower than the Enduro, but throw in a few unbermed turns and the Madonna walks away with the Enduro's lunch. It is a super engaging ride and requires/encourages an active riding style.   Uphill it is just as competant as the Enduro.  It won't break any records, but you will get to the top of the mountain comfortably.

  14. While the sum sounds excessive, it isn’t clear that it is unwarranted.  Bike parks require planning, maintenance, etc so who knows?  Going to Mt. Hood’s website says the mtb operations are “suspended” not “banned”, which I interpret as meaning you can still bike in the area, just not on the bikepark trails and no uplift.  So, you know, regular mountain biking is still ok?
