  1. What are the special characteristics of Zylon?

How does it compare to compare to carbon, kevlar, dyneema etc

    Stiffness-to-weight ratio (carbon...)???

    Impact resistance (kevlar)???

    OR???

Zylon, or also called “artificial spider web”.

Zyoln, has the world's highest levels of strength and thermal resistance, and Dyneema, a superstrong high modulus polyethylene fiber that is lighter than water, with a specific gravity of 0.97.Polyparaphenylene benzobis oxazole.

    Too technical

As a comparison, the tensile strength (kg/mm2) of Carbon is about 360. Zylon is about 580! Basically it’s way harder, but at the same time does not have the same fragile impact characteristic as Carbon. Zylon super fiber tensile strength is almost double than p-Aramid fiber.

It was initially developed for aerospace and now is being used for protective clothes like body armor, safety gloves ect. and sports equipment like golf clubs, tennis rackets, bows… and, well you know

  2. bobdea,

In terms of materials, I can say that VIRUS is for sure using the most advanced materials. He uses several different wood cores in combination with other materials like Kevlar and Carbon, depending which work best together… He was the one who for the first time used Zylon (artificial spider web) in snowboards... and now using for the first time the “No wax base”… Back when I was still living in Germany (’88) and started carving, VIRUS already was the choice of board for the people who wanted something special and advanced!

In terms of “best board of the planet”, I don’t know, Boards are a very personal thing and what is the best for me might not be for others.

As far as I remember, you have the Phantom I which is about 4 years old? Not really sure, but if that is the case, don’t you think that your comparison would be a little off? Would be more fair to compare the Phantom III (current model like kevbo’s!) with your other boards. Lot’s of big material changes in the last years…

    Bob,

NICE RIDE! I am sure you will like it.

    Philfell,

Bob’s board is the Gladiator which is 175cm w/ 17.1 waist. Basically the same specs as the Tantalus Chris started with.

    ar(angel,

Let me know when you need more information or help with selecting the right ride. Maybe a 17.1 or even wider board will be better for you…

I spoke to Frank about your email… could it be that his mail bounced back? Maybe spam folder. Please email him again (or me) and provide your phone number so in case mail bounces back, he can call you!

    bola,

Thanks for mentioning that. Most people think of VIRUS as very narrow boards only! Well, not the case at all.

    D-Sub,

    Dave! What can I say

    nils,

Am so happy for you! Really great that the Swoard crew found a great manufacture for their incredible EC machines

Another note. In case you mail VIRUS and don’t get any feedback right away, please don’t be disappointed. Frank is so busy right now, he is working till midnight every day to fill his orders in the same high quality as always. Again, you can always email me as well if you have a question.

  3. I bought a Terminator Team Edition partway through last season, then picked up a Terminator Extreme Carbon and a Gladiator Extreme Carbon for this season. I only have one day on the new boards, but they deliver, no doubt about that. Extreme edge hold and variable carving radius, quite a different concept from other boards.

Without a doubt, Virus is worth the $$$.

Thanks Chris! I knew it would not take long until you post and sure can rely on you :biggthump

I just don’t want to be the first one all the time who praises VIRUS so much :1luvu:

BUT THEY REALLY DO DELIVER !!!

  4. I keep hearing all these crazy things about virus boards, are they all they are cracked up to be?

and whats up with the waxless base they offer?

    are they worth the dough?

I am considering buying one this is why I ask, the more I hear though the more skepitical I become.

The "No wax base" is used for the first time now by Virus. It's a material mix of Teflon and others :nono:

    No waxing required!

Am expecting my new board with the NWB any day now... will post some pics when I have it...

bobdea, what crazy things are you hearing?

  5. You might want to contact Ray directly for accurate info on the Virus boards. He is a rep or dealer or both. Just check the forum search under VIRUS and you can email him directly from the PM.

No, not really a rep or a dealer. But a BIG fan and helping my friend Frank (owner of Virus) until things get really established here... (working on it...).

But if you have questions, please feel free to contact me: icom@netwood.net

  6. UPZ boots have a very stiff tongue, I can see them causing problems for some folks but nothing a good boot fitter would not be able to take care of.

VERY stiff, TOO stiff, at least for me. They caused lot's of problems... I think the new UPZ models have a way softer tongue now... They have a cut in the upper part of the tongue... and a new liner as well... Can someone confirm?

Or is that only for the Virus edition models?

  7. Wow, Mammoth looks bad

It started snowing right now and hopefully this will help to get them some base now... went up to main lodge yesterday, had a drink and had to leave... it was just to frustrating to see the crowd sliding down that hill with almost no snow...

  8. how fast can you really be going on a 175?

Great question, can someone answer this?

I would really like to know too

sounds like you need several boards and not just 1 board that does it all, because it is just is not out there.

Sure thing, if the budget allows, I would always recommend to own several as well...

  9. My style would be more like agressive carving wtih quick edge to edge transitions and mostly fast and wide turns. But on the other hand, I would like to have a board that would be capable of making narrow turns as well as wide turns. And that's why I look at Virus with interest. As I got, they have multiple radii, and that would probably allow me to do both, wide and narrow turns. And besides that they are rather small and that would allow me to make quick edge to edge transitions, right?

    Yes, right!

Quick edge to edge, narrow and wide turns, plus very stable at hight speeds is what you can expect from Virus for sure!

I would look at a 175cm/17.1 Gladiator or Tanatalus, good combination of all the above. Select the materials you think meet your criteria... Best thing, contact Virus directly and tell them what you are looking for.

  10. I'm just a crazy carver

I don't undertand this statement really in order to comment better...

What exactly makes you a "crazy carver"?

Do you like to lay it out like carzy, like crazy edge to edge transitions,

or crazy wide, narrow turns, or crazy fast turns?

I think this could help to get you better feedback to your question.

  11. Guess I got VERY lucky!

Am married since ’88 :1luvu: and started boarding (hardboots) together with her in’89.

The question if I pay for her tickets is obsolete in our case since we consider our financials as one pool.

Realizing how difficult it must be to find a) a matching partner in gerneral, b) someone who also likes the snow, and c) geez, someone who even rides plates.

I voted "I pay for hers", but in terms of dating agree with Randy’s first post. At some point there should be some appreciation and effort being made by the date/partner to contribute...

Different in Europe? It has been a while, but as far as I remember, in Europe this would not even be an issue. Most of the time the date would be offended by being invited all the time, unless there would be a major finical imbalance between the two, or some kind of other agreement…

    My 2 married cents...

  12. We are trying to make it this time! It’s the first season for us in Aspen, and pretty close to the SES date, non the less, my wife and I will try to make it over and join you guys :1luvu:

By that time I should also have the complete new Virus demo fleet available and would bring as well… sure thing :biggthump

Dave, did you get my email in regards my Virus Gladiator Zylon being a demo board now?
