  1. They brought golf to the masses with Palmer in the 60's and have revamped it with Tiger. Golf is pretty boring to watch on TV. I mean, I have tried to watch it many times (I worked for IMG for a good stint so I HAD to...) and I can never even see the little ball flying through the air. WTF? People watch it in droves! And it's very, very slow action. Alpine riding is waaaay more fun to watch imho. Maybe my TV is too old and small to see the little ball??? Anyway, clearly some big sports marketing company needs to be coerced into this project.
  2. It's already horizontal, so how could there be liquid water in it? If it were my house, I'd just wait until there has been a dry spell outside and the wood looks dry, insulate it, board it up, Tyvek it, make it look pretty somehow and make sure that any necessary flashing is properly installed to keep possible outside moisture from running into it. If the pipe bursts again, he's got to rip everything out anyway. Just my two cents, which of course could be totally misguided since it's my sister, brother-in-law, two brothers & boyfriend who are architects and builders, not me.... Good luck!
  3. OK, so I called my GP this morning and got a noon apopintment with the Nurse Assistant, since he was booked. (I actually have a shoulder ortho here, but he was on vacation, so I went the GP route.) Anyway, the nurse sent me over to the hospital for an x-ray, and thankfully (I think) it's not fractured. That being said, the nurse said that there is definitely something wrong in there (duh!) and she thinks I tore something in my rotator cuff. This sounds worse to me. I mean, I've had small breaks before, and in a matter of 6 weeks all is fine. A torn something sounds surgical, which I really want to avoid. (My freaking hospital deductible is $1,000.) She said to keep icing it & taking ibruprofin for a few more days and to call by the end of the week to let them know if it is better or worse. Does anybody have any thoughts on torn shoulders? My shoulder ortho has worked for the US Ski Team, so I do like him a lot, but he's a non-surgical guy. I guess I could go see him next week when he is back. Any more useful input from this group? I'm assuming that many of you have messed up your shoulders at some point or another.
  4. I can only imagine the yoga moves you must have been pulling to work on it in a closet. Hopefully you had some help getting it down the stairs. The KTM is a 500, and we had to get it up a flight of 22 rickety wooden, rotting stairs two winters ago for storage. That sucked. The down part in the spring was easy, but they were outdoor stairs so he just fired her up and went for it.
  5. I'm glad I'm not the only one here who keeps a bike in their kitchen! Actually, since the snow is now almost completely gone, the BF has moved his KTM back out to the porch. Hopefully it will stay out there until November. :)
  6. Tyvek is a breathable weather barrier, so imho you should use it. It will not only keep moisture out, but it will let it breathe out of the wood if there is any residual moisture trapped in there. It helps to decrease the chance of mold or mildew growth because it does breathe - think Goretex for your house.
  7. Thanks guys. I think I'm going to get an xray tomorrow. I just tried to change my shirt, and it was pretty painful when I had my arm up, and then there was some kind of small snapping noise from the shoulder and a LOT of pain for a few seconds. F$%K!!! Needless to say, I didn't get my shirt changed, so I'll be wearing the work shirt home. If I wait till tomorrow and go see my regular doctor, it will only be the $30 office visit copay. Lance is back on his bike already, so I guess if it is broken it will hopefully mean just a few weeks of no biking? He took only 3 weeks off, right? Anyway, I appreciate your input. Neil, my symptoms sound too much like yours for me to ignore it this time.
  8. OY. OK, so has anyone perusing this ever broken their collar bone? I slipped coming down the stairs this morning, (I've been having a problem with vertigo since December, so I'm rather clutzy for the time being) and in order to keep from jackknifing my neck into a deadly or paralyzing kind of position, I took a the hit with my right shoulder on a 120 year old barn beam. There was a really sharp pain, but since I hadn't had any coffee yet, and I drank a bit too much red wine at the bbq last night, my brain really wasn't functioning and I didn't think much of it until a couple of hours later when I realized that I couldn't put my truck into park when I pulled into the lot at work. I actually had to use my left hand to put the truck in park cause I couldn't pick up my arm. It hurts a LOT to move my arm forward or upward. The pain is right on the pointy part of my collar bone, and the bruise is coming in really well now. I took two Advil, and the pain is tolerable now, so I'm thinking/hoping it's just a bad bruise. Any thoughts people? I have health insurance, but the ER co-pay is $50, which I don't have. Should I wait a day or two and if it's still impossible to put my truck in park, go get an X-Ray then? I cracked my ankle once a few years ago in Switzerland, (doing that crazy sledding down the alps at night with a head lamp on after drinking a lot of hot wine and eating too much fondue) and since I had only been there a few days and didn't want to miss out on all of the riding that I had planned, I just grinned and bore the pain until 10 days later when I got home. Then I had an x-ray and ended up in a boot for a while. Those Swiss pharmicists are great! They hooked me up with some sort of gel (that you can't get here in the states) that got the ankle swelling down enough so I could get my snowboard boot on and I was golden for the rest of the trip. Anyway, my doc in the USA said no further damage was done by waiting 10 days to get treatment, since it was such a small crack. Do you think I'll be OK to wait a few days on the collar bone? It's not like there is bone sticking out of my shoulder or anything... Any doctors or nurses around with advice? Help, please. :o I get paid on Friday, so I could go get the x-ray then, if necessary. I would truly appreciate any advice from the masses.
  9. I agree - these books are the perfect kind of book for long flights. I read the first three of them between NYC and China a couple of years ago. They are hilarious and light, and if you get distracted by a noisy, smelly, or obnoxious-seat-kicking kid while reading, you won't get lost or loose your train of thinking when you get back to the page. I live in Vermont now and work at a massage therapy spa. We have almost no business between May and November. I sit here at the desk hoping for the phone to ring or for somebody to come in so I have something to do, (other than surf the internet aimlessly) so I'm making my way though the rest of the series this summer while at "work." I also recommend "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson if you haven't read it. Maybe it appeals to me because I grew up in the woods and took a long hiatus from living in that environment, and I'm middle aged and constantly fighting the "spread." Anyway, it's also a hilarious, well-written read. Have a great trip and let us know how the flight went.
  10. The Patagonia pants that I have include all of the above, except for padding in the knees. I use my knees a lot when teaching, so I just wear knee pads under them. They are made of heavy duty Gortex, and they have full length zippers, so you can put them on without removing your boots and crampons. They have crampon protection around the cuffs, reinforcement on the knees, suspenders, they aren't baggy, etc. They come in men's and women's, and yes, they're expensive. Retail was something like $320. I got them for $180 on an end of season deal. The model is called the "Primo." You may want to look for them now on and end of season deal....
  11. I have a great pair of Patagucci's that have lasted me now 3 seasons of 70+ days of riding and teaching on the Ice Coast. They still aren't showing wear anywhere except very slightly on the knees. I bought them from a crunchy tele guy at a free heel shop. He says he can get 6 or 7 seasons out of the same pant before he has to send them to his friend to have Kevlar fabric reinforcements sewn on. I have been out on the hill with this guy a lot, and his knees literally touch the snow on every single turn. Anyway, Kevlar fabric seems to be a good thing.
  12. I was up there on April 19th/20th. Glorious weather, 60 degrees and bluebird with no wind on the 19th. We headed down on the 20th as the weather wasn't so pleasant, hiking the bowl in bad weather sucks, and we had other crap to do in VT. We'll go back again in a week or so, but the Sherbie was only good about half way down on the 20th. Plan on hiking out all the way if you go from this point on this spring. I only rode Hillman's, as my legs were so shot from the hike and my 40 lb pack, that I couldn't do the bowl the same day. Conditions were so, so, as the Inferno was on the 18th. We'll go back in May and stay over a couple of nights to do the bowl. Hope some other people get up there this year - it's an incredible experience. Since I only started riding hard boots in 07/08, I'm still taking my softies up there. Hopefully by next spring I'll be up for the hard boots, as I think it would definitely be easier.
  13. I want this please. I have emailed you....
  14. I actually bought it from a dad who was upgrading his kid's computer. They were an upper middle class family and really didn't care what they got for the computer. My friend acquired the older iBook from a computer guy who had bought it used from his workplace, and then decided it was too slow for his needs. I would never make a purchase from someone who is shifty, and have turned down opportunities to purchase goods that were most likely stolen. I do agree that one needs to be careful when using Craigslist, but I don't think and would never assume that every person who uses it is suspect.
  15. I changed from PC to Mac in January, for precisely the same reason. FYI, I picked up a barely used macBook on Craigslist for absolute peanuts. If you scan the larger metropolitan area Craigslists for a while, you will most certainly find what you want at a deep discount. It works like a dream, and the video transfers (we had a lot of 8 millimeter that had to get converted) are easy. I recommended this to a friend, and he also got a barely used iBook for next to nothing. (I think he paid $200.)
  16. Would you take $75 for the 28.5's??? You can email me via my profile. Thanks.
  17. These are great boots. I wish they were a 5...
  18. I currently ride an Alp 150 with Burton plate bindings. I'm female, 5'1", 106 lbs, but very strong. I don't mind stiff boards at all, and actually prefer them, but when shopping for a used board in an appropriate length, all that I could find (within my meager, ski bum budget) was this Alp that was hardly used at a resale shop nearby for $100. I'm a newbie carver but have been a solid snowboarder with good technique for many years. (Let's just say that I'm "middle aged but I can rip.") I started learning to carve two seasons ago on a borrowed, very stiff 156 (I think) Option board. I immediately fell in love with it and started looking for used gear. My soft boot setups include: Sapient PNB3 151 (which I LOVE it is stiff, light and fast) Nitro Black Wido 147 (it's too d#$n short though I love the stiffness) Burton G-Twin 152 (love it for the park, but it's getting beat as I use it for teaching too) Burton Feelgood 152 (my old and trusty) And some old clunkers that I won't mention.I ride very stiff Salomon soft boots on all of the above, (forgive me, but I have no clue what model they are, I forgot and it doesn't say on the boot anywhere that I can see without my reading glasses...) and Blax Heidi's on my Alp. I love my hard boots, no complaints there, and my boyfriend is a bootfitter and orthotics guy, so truly, my feet are happy. Of course, I'm living the ski bum lifestyle here in VT, (e.g. regular meals are not always possible, let alone buying a custom board!) but I'm committed to getting better at carving and really want a stiffer board that will work well for someone who doesn't weigh much. Can anybody help? Mookiehouse - did you get any emails about this topic which aren't posted which might be useful? Thanks guys.

    158 cm Volkl RT

Do you think that I'm too light for a 158? I weigh 115 lbs with all of my gear on. Currently riding a 150 Alp, which is already too soft for me. I was on a 154 Option prototype (very stiff) two seasons ago which I loved, but had to give back to it's owner. Me strong like a baby female Ox... Uhm, my boyfriend rides a 185 RT and likes it a lot, but I am still just learning. What do you think?

    new to carving

Hi all - I'm a new carver too. And am loving it! Last season I borrowed an Option prototype from a friend, (I had found some hardly used Blax boots at a resale shop for $100) and loved it. I found an Alp at the same shop a month or so ago and have 5 days on it so far this season. I can already tell the Alp is too soft. I'll probably need to upgrade by the end of this season, but the price was right and it's fine for me as a beginner. I have been told that it will be a good powder board, so I'll keep it for special occasions!
  21. Yes, run, don't walk, to Surefoot and get some custom footbeds and liners and your days of pain will be over. Their product works wonders in hard boots and even in soft boots!
