  1. We were talking about the "scary sharp system" for sharpening as it applies to your board edges. http://www.bomberonline.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=30475 I started thinking about the use of micro bevels which are widely used on plane & chisel edges: See:http://www.leevalley.com/shopping/TechInfo.aspx?c=1&type=a&p=57106 Can any of the tuners here comment on the use of mirco bevels. I could see their theoretical benifit, ie:allowing you to ride more accute angled edges, without the dulling. Care to comment? I know this is way geeky, but I love to sharpen stuff.:D
  2. The 3m paper in the higher grits is the shnitz, Lee Valley carries them. http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=33004&cat=1,43072 Have look through a loop at the finished edge vs. what you normally ride.
  3. Speaking of edge honing, the best and cheapest system I came across was the "scary sharp" method using 3M 'sandpaper'. While I used it exclusively for plane blades and chisels, it is simple to adapt for polishing edges on boards, using existing edge guides. You will not get a shaper edge: period. You can get comparable results, if you spend a small fortune in water/diamond/Arkansa stones, and have apprenticed with some Japanese water stone ninja. It may be overkill, but I'm sure there are some race tuners's that would like to explore the system. The original thread that started it can be found here: http://www.woodbutcher.net/scary.shtml There are videos, and many more pages relating to its application to woodworking on the net. Just google "scary sharp". Buy some band aids, your edges will be ...scary sharp!
  4. interested, age, condition, stock or custom?
  5. I have mine paired with some drake podium bindings. I find that combo just a tad softer than my suzuka's with blue bst's. I'm not sure there is much to be gained by a much more ridged setup, particularly for pow. They were developed for the Japanese pow riders, and are really great for slackcountry acess snow shoeing. (fit nicely in msr's) Back here in the east, I was out all day in the slush yesterday. Dry as a bone. Hey for 99 bucks, I may buy another set to stick in the closet.
  6. Burton Serow, stiff enough for a softboot carver, vibrum soles, leather, warm. So ugly they are discounted everywhere:ices_ange They remind me of my old Pontiac Aztec
  7. Flor de Cana from Nicaragua. Even during the "action" with Honduras the stuff was available in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Soooo good. Now mind you, it's been awhile since i'v had any, so memories of wild French Harbour nights may have clouded my judgement. Hairywater
  8. Flow Solitude: They have titanium butterflies http://www.evogear.com/snowboards/flow-solitude-wx-snowboard-2009.aspx I started carving on this board. Not stiff enough torsionally to carve well on the hard stuff but in deep snow it rides well. Moved up to a FC2 171, now that is stiff.
  9. I'm not qualified to comment on the riding, but technically it is an interesting idea. Have a look. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKEhnNc0WdY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKEhnNc0WdY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
  10. Product received, as described:ices_ange, thanks for the free t-shirt Hairywater
  11. Big thanks to Cris, for setting this up. Nice to meet all of you fellow hardbootters. Hairywater
  12. Chamonix, France. It's been a long time. Can't beat the areas atmosphere, food, varied terrain. http://www.truveo.com/Carving-Session-with-Friends-in-Lech/id/748699340 Still looks good:biggthump
  13. My family and I will be at MSA, for 4 days starting the 15th of February. I am looking for an instructor to give me a lesson on plates, my wife & daughter on ski's and my son on soft boots. I would imagine there is 4-5 hours of work for a qualified instructor. email scottw AT coc DOT ca
  14. Thanks, i'v been out on my freeride with plates, thats been good. Its wiiiide so edge to edge is clunky, but I like the solid connection with the board. I'm getting a real carving board soon.I'm going to call Mansfield and see if I can arrange a lesson or two during the week. Weekends are too busy all around. Thanks for the input, hope to see you at the Osler SES.
