  1. How many folks are committed to the Big Session. What are the CONFIRMED dates for the sessions. I am working up my schedule and trying to fit everything in.

It is kind of a monumental year for the Big Fish. 20th season snowboarding has been allowed there and 60th season for skiing. Maybe the Big Fish should know or be reminded of that?

  2. John and I skipped the Big Fish opening and headed to Targhee again. Great snow and good weather again. Met Michael from Munich Germany on a Nidecker GS. He was ripping up the groomers all weekend. We even had fresh tracks most of the way home on the drive.

  3. I was cleaning up my office and ran across this photo from the Whitefish News Paper. It is from 1988.

They had previously not let snowboards on...but in the spring of 1988 they let snowboarders on for a 2 week trial basis. I was riding a sweet 161 Barfoot Freestyle, Sorrel Boots (with tons of Duct Tape), and stretch pants.

Looks like they have embraced us well.

  4. Targhee had pretty fair early season conditions. It was great to be out sliding around again. We had a fun day with beautiful sunny skies and comfortable temperatures. I did get some unexpected base damage. Near the top of the mountain where some rocks were cleverly hidden beneath a few inches of snow. I expected the bottom to be where I would get some damage.

If you do head to Targhee take a rock board, don't expect to ride super smooth groomers.

I think I will wait till the next storm cycle before I go back up. I hate the thought of my body taking a core shot like my board did.

  5. Good route. Monida pass on I-85 and the pass just east of Butte on I-80 should be your only real problems...unless it is windy then the whole Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana thing can be tricky... If you are driving a 2wd truck up make sure you have at least a couple hundred pounds of weight in the back to keep pressure on the traction wheels. Chains can make the difference between going over a pass or being required to hunker-down.

I wish you a safe and uneventfull trip.

Bozeman is a great town. Big Sky and Bridger are both great areas, hard to compare the two they are very different.

    Have fun!

  6. 1) Turner Mountain in NW Montana for best fall lines, trees, atmosphere, powder. Turner is the closest thing to cat or heli skiing with a lift. They are closed Monday - Thursday so Friday's can be amazing after a week of snow. www.skiturner.com

    2) Whitefish Mountain Resort (formerly known as Big Mtn), Excellent groomers, very fast lifts, small crowds.

    3) Verbier....Need I say more?
