  1. Groovastic,

I think the specs of the proto 185 Full Race were similar to the 185 Race, but the 08/09 185 Full Race prototype was much stiffer and the nose is going to engage differently. Once at speed, the pointed nose 185 Race was easy to ride, even at my 145 pounds. I was not even interested in trying the 185 Full Race proto (too beefy). I would have ridden a 175 Full Race, but we did not have one to try. I think the effective edge was 156, the sidecut was 18.5, and the width was 20 mm on the 185 Full Race prototype we had.

  2. good advice Mr. Michaud but you do realize that JohnBauer was not out of line by requesting further clarification from Mr. Bordy and he certainly did not "embarrass" himself. after all i remember you "embarrassing" yourself (equally if not worse) about a decade ago in a similar bomberonline situation lol.

i watched the NSR video before it was pulled and it appears that under the prevailing circumstances (snow conditions, slope pitch, chosen turn shape, chosen equipment) that he was indeed RIPPING on what appeared to be a fall 1995/spring 1996 burton alp 6.3. if Mr. Bordy rode the same equipment in similar prevailing conditions he would indeed have rode very similarly to NSR . i concede that Mr. Bordy would probably have ridden better--but just marginally. i've never met NSR or seen him ride in person nor have i met Mr. Bordy but i have had the pleasure of seeing him ride (EXTREMELY WELL) in person. i admit that i am guessing but NSR probably isn't a slouch either. wonder what NSR could do on Mr. Bordy's great equipment?

i have always liked Mr. Bordy as a racer and value his perception and knowledge of all things alpine related but even he will admit that his judgment is not always 100%. "Lot of errors in his fundamentals based on current technique" but NSR was not on current equipment. if he were then Mr. Bordy would not have noticed "Lot of errors in his fundamentals based on current technique." NSR was on an alp! that's why he rode the way he did. there's no reason to rudely cut into a person for his equipment choices. people will not adopt, upgrade, trade up or whatever for many reasons.

are they just cheap bas*ards or is it because they are independent thinkers who don't feel that it is necessary to spend money needlessly? the keyword is needlessly because they don't NEED to ride a certain way or at a certain speed or on a certain board or whatever the fashion/equipment arbiters dictate to be de rigueur. obviously it's not the price as alpine snowboarding is a lot cheaper than a lot of other hobbies--golf anyone?

as for the safety issue it's a red herring. if you know the board has a soft nose and you fold it then whose fault is it? the board's? if a newbie is a student and admittedly on a tight budget and furthermore essentially already has her heart set on the ultraprime that she rode on a TRY B4 BUYING basis and was just asking for a gentle nudge to take the plunge into hardbooting then we certainly did a good job of DISCOURAGING her from starting in the first place (or at best delaying her start.) how many beginners outperform their boards? did we take into account NADIA'S circumstances before the knee jerk responses? did we just discount her 11 years of softboot experience to the point where she couldn't identify an imminent nose fold?

RDY_2_CARVE said "I personally would have bailed on this site after all this crapola" and it is so true. i don't know if stuff like this prevents people from hardbooting but i do know it can stop people from participating in bomberonline. i know in my case i was really excited about 10 years ago when i first found this great site only to be appalled by all the bickering and flaming going on that i didn't even bother registering. i simply logged off and never visited again for almost 10 years. i even attended a couple of colorado expression sessions on my skiis just to watch and learn from the carvers but remained anonymous because i was afraid of a total stranger from bomberonline suddenly going ballistic on me for no apparent reason. if i stayed away for 10 years, probably a lot of others did also--i hope nadia will be able to see past the stupid bickering on this thread and appreciate bomberonline for the fabulous resource that it truly is.

i'm kinda disgusted by this thread to offer any helpful advice to nadia but i'll sleep on it and try again on the weekend. ironically ALL the advice for and against nadia's burton choices are excellent. it's just all the irrelevant non sequiturs clouding over the advice. if you (nadia) can get a good deal on the ultraprime then do it. it's late and i'll explain later in the week. i have been buying boards for a long time and have never resold any. only gave a few away to young kids without money who wanted to hardboot so essentially i have more than enough boards for my own good. i'll send you my ultraprime for free if all this bickering has delayed your decision so long that you missed your opportunity to get a good deal on one.

There is a lot of good stuff in this post. I talk to riders, beginner and expert, all winter long that do not read or post on Bomber for the exact same reasons mentioned in this post.

BOL is full of passionate people with many opinions, but it is ultimately only a small number of posters that cause most of the problems. They are easy to find. Maybe the posters who have been so quick to condemn what tenorman has written should read it again and give it a little more thought this time.

  3. Guys, Theo (KingCrimson) is 14 years old and he is in over his head.

He did not start this thread and he cannot delete it in the normal way. As some of you know, a moderator moved this from another thread. I think he has asked the moderators to help him.

Theo, you might consider not responding anymore in this thread. You can see how things mushroom into bigger issues.

Carving on snowboards is why we are here. :biggthump

    Thanks,

    Buell

  4. Last year ended with bang, or as oldsnowboards called it, a snap of bone! This year, thankfully, looks to end in a whimper with work slowly taking over all 7 days of the week from our winter of snowboarding everyday we wanted (or still had the strength). We might get a few days more since the riding last into summer here in Oregon, but our season pretty much ends April 4th. It has been a great winter!:biggthump

  5. Q. I have been told that Welch Village will "ban" alpine snowboards. Do I understand correctly?

    A. No snowboards are being banned, only a certain style of carving.

    Q. I am not sure I understand what is meant by "certain style of carving". Can you clarify?

    A. Going edge to edge, creating large divots, and going almost horizontally to the fall line. This is a huge liability issue for us.

These comments are just more evidence that this is poorly thought out and that they are grasping at straws. Of all the liability issues on the mountain, are they really trying to tell us that carve trenches are a huge one? Not sure, but it looks like someone there has an outsized dislike of alpine snowboarders and carving.

  6. If a Session takes place at this location then it might be wise to keep the Nasty Grams out of what looks to be a delicate set of dynamics as is.

Hence no Nasty Grams or Burning Sacs of Poo.

(Not above such acts if things do not work out)

Let's refrain from making this hopefully isolated instance any worse for the local Carver's.

Some one will have to put a professional happy face on and use there best Doctor Phil Mojo to solve this problem with the Mtn Management.

+1 for this idea. Hammering them with negative emails is not going to help the local carvers.

  7. the worst part of all of this, if it's even going to happen, is this place has the best carving runs around here. it's where we've been doing the MES for the past 5 years, and even had a local tv station do a story on carving filmed here at the MES '06. it bothers me that i'm the one who's been organizing these events, know some people in the office by name, and that they haven't talked to me first about any type of banning.

it should also be noted that there are only 3 - 5 of us carvers at the hill at any one time (except for the MES and the 2 days of USASA racing). usually on a weekday, when there are only 50 or so people at the hill. so i really don't see how we're causing all these injuries. i have a feeling, that this one woman who really hates us, has made enough of a stink to cause this to happen. even though her husband is quite talented carving on his skis. i wonder if she'll have to ski alone next year?

guess i'll have to make some calls / trips to welch in the near future, and try to make some sense out of all this.

    -trent

Sorry to hear about this for you Trent. Sounds like it is time for a sit down meeting with some of the people you know in the office. It is a poorly written notice of a ban so maybe no one thought it through sufficiently and a little pressure will get the threat removed. One percent of the people on the hill with carving equipment? Damage to the hills? Causing injuries to those who get stuck in ruts?

Maybe they already enforce the rules on the books, but it seems to me that there are much more significant safety issues than a carver trench. Straightlining boarders and skiers who do not yield to the downhill rider, out of control riders, jibbers jumping onto the groomers or crossing them perpendicular to the fall line without looking, failure to look uphill and yield when starting downhill, not stopping where one obstructs a trail or cannot be seen from above. The list is pretty long even if I was not a hardbooter.

Maybe, if even actually enacted, their enforcement of aggressive carvers will fall under the same negligence I see at every resort I have been to and it won't be an issue at all.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

  8. In Utah this winter I ran into a guy skiing on two Nidecker race boards he got from Bola. "I am off to get some low angle pow!" he said. A few days later, we saw a different skier riding tele bindings on what had to be two alpine snowboard decks. These things were wide! He would let out this big grunt every turn. I only saw him once, maybe it was one run experiment.

  9. My test results only apply to using the BTS system. I did not test the boots with the locking lean adjusters. Also, my test are by hand flexing since I am testing 25 mondo 700s and 22 mondo 225s.

One important thing to remember, if testing the boots for stiffness by hand, make sure you push the tongue forward as well as the back of the boot. In my first test, I was only pushing the back of the boot and got much different results once I made sure the tongue was coming along.

Pointbreak, if you go with the 325s and choose to soften them up using my method of trimming the outsides of the tongues, I would only remove a little plastic at a time. You can always take more later. The difference in before and after flex for Rebecca is significant.

  10. We have a pair of the 225s and the 700s. I do not know about the effect the plastics have on the stiffness of each boot, but with the BTS, they each pivot at the cant adjuster anyway so the plastic is less relevant.

What I found is that the shape of the tongue on the 225s (I assume it is the same as the 325s) affects the stiffness dramatically with the BTS when compared to the 700s with BTS.

The 225's tongue wraps much further at the ankle. When the tongue is in the boot and the boot is flexed forward, the 'wings' on the tongue at the ankle press against the boot cuff and create a much stiffer boot. The 700s do not have this and flexes forward much more freely with the BTS.

The 225s are Rebecca's boots and I ended up cutting the 'wings' off the tongues to give her a more flexible boot for her lighter weight. She was already on the yellow springs. She is very happy with the modification.

As has been said by others already, the boot molds are different and the boot that fits your foot the best is the one you will likely want to ride in.

  11. Huh? No Bob, I am just responding to you posting stuff like this (see below) about a fellow BOL simply trying to sell his board and then not having the balls to apologize when it is clear you are wrong.

IMHO, knowing people who run scams and how they list on ebay I'd say that board is hot.

Also, the guy has skit feedback on ebay, probably ran some ebay scams in the past too.

    go get him!

it says the board is in canada........

  12. Hello Bobdea,

Is that the best you can do? This situation has nothing to do with being politically correct. It has to do with giving respect to an individual and with taking responsibility for your actions.

You called this guy out on BOL in a big way and it would certainly look like you were wrong in a big way. There was plenty of evidence that Dimbeanu has nothing do to with Michelle's boards but you chose to overlook that in favor of you pronouncements that this was most likely the guy.

Certainly it makes sense to look into the matter, but it was handled incredibly poorly by you and Michelle and an apology would be much more fitting than your last post.

  13. Some times it is hard to find the words.

Vibe,Stoke,Soul,Majestic Conditions..............It all came together for us.I am still in awe even dayz later

Had it not been perfect? I am positive this group of Carvers would have made OES 08 a great time for all just the same.

    Twas perfect though Eh?

It was great to have Carved it up with all of you.

    TC

    Very well said TC. :biggthump

  14. I was a lone wolf today. I think I saw Etsu at the bottom of Outback as I was heading to NW, but that is it.

Gotta get there early for 3rd chair at Pine Martin on a Powder day. Thought I would find you guys, but Outback and NW are long and wooded. I actually ended up hiking for the goods. Great stuff!

We'll be back for Monday through Thursday.
