Anyone want to climb/ride hood on Mon or Tuesday this next week let me know. Would plan to leave at TLine for a tour up to the hogsback and possible summit depending on conditions/motivation. Buell called me last week when it was warm but couldnt due to time issues. Anyways might be able to leave early monday morning? Or just a fun get to know your equipment tour. I know that some our locals have picked up approach skiis and gear?
Jim
If there are local riders that need to borrow avy gear, I can offer it for loan.I also have quite a bit of new gear I can sell. Shovels, probe poles. Trekking poles.
Hood riders should not pass this opportunity up! The riding on Zig Zag is amazing right now. Rebecca and I just did a couple of long laps on Zig Zag last week. I went up to Hogsback before dropping back down to where Rebecca was waiting. Approach skis, snowshoes both work fine on the frozen corn mornings. Then you get to ride down on perfect corn. It gets addicting! I climbed and rode down from Mt McLoughlin yesterday. Two solid laps it was soooooo good!
Last year with Jim, last week from Hogsback, and last week Rebecca way down Zig Zag (probably below Zig Zag).

A few thoughts from experience after a couple of significant knee injuries:
Cartilage damage or a location where the cartilage has already been damaged and cleaned up that is irritated by carving.
Referred pain from another spot in the knee.
Tight hamstring (or other overcompensating muscles around the knee) is a problem my bad knee causes. That then puts new pressures on the knee joint when I carve.
Scar tissue build up within the knee joint from past injuries keeps parts from flowing freely.
Carving puts significant forces on the knee joint that, if you knee is a bit "loose" could be really irritating any damage to the cartilage. I now have to ride with a brace that gives my knee lateral support when I carve. I still limp at the end of each carving day though.
Good luck.

Hey Dan,
Schweitzer is a great mountain. We stayed at the K2 a few years ago. It was very reasonable and we even got a kitchen.
Beware of the fog!

Don't overlook Buell and Rebecca's killer plans. Powdermountain and Snowbasin.
You will not find any deals at those mountains though, so you better have enough days to make it worth it.
Brundage in Idaho has a $259 first time season pass and a $319 season pass if purchased before May 1st. It is a really cool smaller mountain and not too far from home.

Hey Mark,
Several of us will be showing up at KW for Wednesday morning as well.

If you can, check out Powder and Snowbasin before they close.
Otherwise, Snowbasin is reasonably steep without a lot of easy slopes and definitely gets more high speed skier traffic. We found Powder Mountain much more friendly for a beginning carver mountain with mellow terrain and fewer people. Snowbasin has much longer runs and more vertical per run than Powder Mountain.
The two resorts are miles apart in feel and amenities so it depends on what you want. Snowbasin has it all. Gondolas, granite bathrooms, great food. Powder Mountain feels more like a small resort that happens to have a huge amount of terrain but only one high speed lift and smelly lodges.

I know that he is a friend of some of you and I never had any issues with WW. I don't think TT acted appropriately toward WW, especially since he was a moderator, BUT.....
The fact is WW did make several physical threats to TT both through PMs and in post here on the forum. That is above any of the normal crap that gets dished out here on a daily basis. Especially since WW and TT live close enough to each other that it would have been easy to fulfill those threats.
I think that the mods would have to ban anyone in that situation. Who knows if he could be reinstated.

I have shipped a lot of boards with USPS Priority, insured, with delivery confirmation (tracking). Oregon to the east coast runs about $38 to $40 with $400 of insurance. Shorter distance or less insurance will be cheaper.
Here is a thread in the FAQ forum on this site that might help.

Hey Shawn, I had the 164 Steep and have not tried the 171. Definitely not too stiff for me at 145 pounds but a solid board. That was a couple of years ago. I seriously doubt you would overpower the 164 on softies. I would also guess that the 171 would be soft enough for you. Which one you get depends on how big of a board you want, what turn radius you want it to make, and what conditions you want to ride it in.

This is a great metal board. I rode one last March. It has great rebound and just eats up bumpy runs. The 14m sidecut will turn incredibly tight when pushed and is super stable at higher speeds and bigger turns. The SGs are have a solid durability track record.
It is a great price! Somebody buy this thing!

Hey Galen,
Not captive enough!
We will ride there a few more times this season. It is a really good carving mountain, but........
We had a pass the last two seasons, but did not get one this season, in part, because of all the management and grooming issues. Hopefully they won't cram all the skiers into Sunrise lodge (when they close West Village) in a couple more weeks like they did last year.
Tahoe was fun last week and maybe next week too. :D

Would the Prior 4X4 be a decent, dedicated carver to learn on?
Very good beginner board. Easy to turn and forgiving. If you have the money, metal makes a seriously forgiving beginner board (if it is the right board to begin with). Used boards are ideal since you can test and resell for very little actual cost.
Shawndoggy and I have both followed the same path of buying lots of used boards from many builders, testing them, and then selling them. I have ended up on custom Coilers exclusively at the moment.
I agree with Bob that there are better boards than the ones you listed although some riders really love their Volkl RTs (I have never tried one). Let testing and personal preference be your guide.

I had it happen for the first time this season. I had adjusted my bindings the night before and did not double check the tightness. I did not pick up on it on my first couple of runs of the day either. Check your bail tightness!
Serious slow motion. My back foot came out when I hit some soft snow and got forward on the board. I managed to straighten the board under me with my front foot as my head dropped into a front flip. Kept that motion going all the way onto my back as my board came over me. I was then able to keep the board in the air until I slid to a stop. Whew!!
Is about all I can say to that experience.

Hey Guys,
Barring a major change in the weather forecast, we will be in the Tahoe area this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The current thinking is Mt Rose on Wednesday, Kirkwood on Thursday, and we will decide Friday later.
Let us know if you will be around.

for the funky names! Rebecca owns a Coiler 163 Flipper and is testing a 152 Lunch Tray. I have a Coiler 174 "What ever it is" that was built in November and we are already working toward the next version.
Working with Bruce is not just picking a board off a website. His stuff is evolving so fast. The final product really reflects all the effort and thought that he puts into each individual customer. That is a wonderful thing. Forget about the website, just email him!
Just tell him what you want the board to do and he will help you decide what is best and then build it for you.

Don't waste your time... this is the same guy that thinks that a well tuned board is unneccessary...

Thanks Bullwings. I guess I missed participating in that gem. ;)

It never ceases to amaze me what people will believe
Like how much they know at 21?
then I take it you believe that risers increase "leverage" too? If so, you both need to go take a physics course.I have not actually given it any thought and I haven't said a thing about it. Interesting way to jump to a conclusion though.
Take care, Buell
Mt Hood Meadow Reports 2008-2009
in Pacific North West
Posted
I got to the top of Hogsback around 11:30. The reason I stopped there was the incessant (I mean incessant) small ice (up to fist sized) fall coming off the cliffs above the route to Old Chute. Most of it was light weight, but a few pieces were really moving and you would have gotten hit numerous times. I was mostly concerned about a bigger chunk breaking loose. No rocks that I could see on that route at that time.
I will get back to Hood fairly soon. Hoping to get Lassen and Shasta first.
