  1. sigh, you sound like a mother talking to their 7 year old, stop being so dramatic. You "deal" with me....lol. You "skilled carvers", like you're some snowboarding god and I'm an out of control 17 year old. I have never had any issue whatsoever with an advanced skier or boarder. They are not dumb enough to sit on under a blind hill. I am in complete control at all times except when I am off the ground. I have been boarding for 20 years, and I enjoy rollers, and will always do the same thing. If there is a "no jumping" sign posted, then I will not jump. If there is no sign, and no people that I can see, I will jump.

I'm sure if you see a pro skiier or boarder hitting some rollers on a slope your first thought is "where is his spotter." No you don't do you. Turn off the reality TV and stop supporting the movement to pussify this country. Your post reeks of the typical american lemming.

Do whatever you want to do to yourself. When your risk start injuring other people and you blame them for it, you have problems. :nono:

BTW, haven't had a TV in 20 years.

  2. I'm a risk taker, what can I say. I'm such an evil person for getting air on blind drops. Thousands of runs doing just this and I run into a person, on a barron slope, which was for advanced riders no less. Excuse me for being so inconsiderate, I'm off to kill some orphans.

What about us skilled carvers on that advanced slopes? We deal with people who sound like you on a regular basis. Would you justify hitting one of us because we 'turned' in front of your quest for speed?

Do not underestimate the speed that we travel and the ability of riders on this site to go very fast and be totally in control. Our speed is very close to your staightlining speed, we just happen to be cranking hard turns as well.

Most (if not everyone of us) would be a complete wreck if we ran into and injured someone. It is unfortunate to have someone posting that is not.

    YOUR RESPONSIBILITY CODE

    1. Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
    2. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
    3. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above.
    4. Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.

As much as other riders ignoring 3 and 4 cause us problems, 1 and 2 (in particular #1) trump them by far. YOU ARE NO EXCEPTION!

  3. Hey Mud,

You might find a used pre-06/07 Tanker. Below are the specs on the Tankers through 05/06 and the 187W only had 4mm of taper, instead of the 15mm of the current model.

Looking forward to hearing how the snowboard building goes. :biggthump

  4. A GS board gives you more time to find and maintain the correct body position through the carve, and the steeps helps you maintain speed as you carve back up hill and transition to the down hill edge. I love the steeps on my 16M GS board. Love it! Feels like riding a horse in a full gallup. Just hold on!

I find just the opposite. The longer side cut GS board will forgive the rider being a bit out of position better (bigger sweet spot), but it will also pick up a lot more speed making its bigger turn down and across the fall line. The smaller sidecut board will make much quicker turns and allow the rider to maintain a lower speed much easier.

Now if you have the room and can handle the speed there is no reason not to go bigger if that is your preference.

  5. Helvetico, sounds like the Reto is a stiffer, and perhaps more lively board than you want to ride. The Tankers much more damp and they have a relatively soft flex. As far as I can tell, hardboots generally provide more powder to bend the board than softboots. What you might be feeling is that they are transferring more of the rebound from the stiffer Reto back into your legs. Whereas softboots might pad that a bit more.

The Tankers built in 06/07 and after are wider than the Tanker you have. They now have a 255 waist, but they are still very damp and relatively soft. There may still be some of the pre 06/07 Tankers around.

If you want a Coiler, just start talking to Bruce about what you want and what he can build. Damp stable boards seem to be his thing, so if you like the Tanker, he could probably create something you really like. Maybe you could create the first Monsta AM-T.

  6. Hi Buell,FYI This is the 08 design as the nose, flex, and split tail are different from the 07 version. I have one of Chris' first 07's. For the forum: There is a reason you don't see many of these for sale, it's because they frick'n rock. Deep pow carving as pure as the driven snow. Does fine on crud and groomers too. In other words take the spread on the Superbowl and fund this deck.

Thanks Al. I write my years that way (07/08 is 08) just to avoid confusion. Didn't work this time. ;) We still have the 06/07 176 red Pow Stick in the family along with a lot of other powder boards. I am certainly not selling both!

This Pow Stick has a little more surface area than the 06/07 and a little longer effective edge. It will turn tighter than you would expect (goes right through the trees), floats like crazy and it lays down smooth carves on the soft powder day groomers.

  7. Hey Jeff,

Maybe you can talk trailertrash into coming and splitting costs. :D

Your wife was doing a pretty good job of that!

    :)

tt, what can we say? If you haven't noticed tenacity is a part of both our personality descriptions! ;) We would love to carve with you guys at OES.

Al, that is great news. Looking forward to riding with you.

  8. Hey Scott,

One of the biggest issues is the wide range of budgets and acceptable accommodations. People end up staying a lot of different places, but as long as they are in Bend, everyone is pretty close. Once you ride most of the day, clean up, and head to dinner, there is not really much time that you are not with other riders.

For hotels, the River House is a decent possibility. The rooms started at $90 per night when we last stayed there. They also have suites that can cut down on the cost if you find people to share it with.

Some people rent a place in Sunriver and drive up to Bend, but it is about 30 minutes away and it gets a little painful driving that extra hour every night to come to the dinners.

We rented a house off VRBO with some other riders this year right in Bend. There are 5 of us in the house. If you can find others to room with, that is a great option. Maybe you could just post looking for people to share a place at OES.

Hope you get some good snow to try your new board. Shawndoggy has had my 177 Coiler AM-T all year and I think is still waiting for good enough coverage to ride it.

  9. Hey Jeff,

The OES thread from last year has some info in it.

Bend has quite a few hotels starting at $40 and up. Obviously nicer as you spend more. The Riverhouse is a local hotel that is not too bad cost wise and reasonably nice.

There is a Bachelor shuttle ($7 each way), but as Mike says, a car will make life much better. I am not even sure you could easily get to the shuttle pick up without a vehicle.

Maybe you can talk trailertrash into coming and splitting costs. :D

  10. Pushing a splitboard in touring mode up the ski tracks in the Alps is hard work, as well as too wobbly for side-hill traverses.

Personally, I would put Dynafit TLT alpine touring bindings on a small pair of 125 kids skis and wear a Dynafit compatible alpine touring ski boot.

This set-up would allow you to skin up the ski tracks put in by the alpine touring skiers in front of you, as well as get some control over the glacier traverses that dot routes all over the Alps.

    Geo

Yes, if you are not making the skin track, what I said about the splitboard skinning better in soft snow than approach skis, is completely irrelevant.

I actually Dynafitted my splitboard recently and picked up some AT boots to make skinning easier and to eliminate the traversing issues. Spark R&D just introduced adapters that make it simple. They also sell just the Dynafit toepiece. I will get to test them as soon as I heal up from a skinning related overuse injury.

  11. I have a 166 Spearhead and a 166 Spearhead splitboard (factory split). The split is noticeably heavier while riding and will hardly carve on a groomer due to the lack of torsional stiffness. The solid SH carves fine on groomers (although its short effective edge definitely limits how hard you can push it). Once split, you will likely only use a board for splitting.

For a trip, I would strongly consider taking a board that will handle any snow condition. Swallowtail splits (if you ride a swallowtail everywhere, disregard the following opinion) will only work well on great snow days and if you trip has scheduled dates you could encounter a wide range of snow conditions.

I have never used approach skis. I did find when considering them, unless someone is building them again or you have a lead, they are hard to find. Several riders here have used them since they allow you to ride any board down (generally Tanker riders).

Split boards have a much greater surface area than approach skis and I would assume travel much better through soft snow and uphill. It is also nice to have a split board on your feet rather than a solid board on your pack and the skis on your feet going up. Due to the weight and length of the approach skis I would prefer to not have them on my back for the ride down, but others do not seem to mind.

I consider snowshoes slow and hard work for soft snow, but if you tour is in spring conditions with firm snow in the mornings and supportable corn in the afternoons, they actually work quite well (though you board is on you back going up).

You likely know this, but Splitboard.com is a good place to ask questions and learn about splits. There is a poster there, Monk151, who will split solid boards for you if you do not want to do it yourself and cannot find a used one that meets you needs.

    Good luck, have fun!
