Aracan
Hi all, I am arguing with myself about whether or not to order a Coiler. The rub lies in the cost of shipping from Canada to Austria. Has any of you worked out an inexpensive way to do that (noticeably less than $150)? Needs not be fast, just low-cost and reliable. Chris Houghton
If the box is under 2 meters in length there are a few options. Canada Post is a partner with DHL in Europe, so that may work. Over 2 meters, I only know of FedEx, which is more expensive. E mail Bruce at Coiler and ask, I know he has shipped boards to that part of the world many times.
Aracan
Under 2 meters. Still, Canada Post will charge CAD 270 (about the same as the lowest UPS rate), and I'll have to pay 20% tax on top of that. Any ideas? Bear in mind that I am willing to wait. I just want to avoid paying a lot of taxes just for the shipping.
RideGuy
As someone else suggested the best thing to do is talk to Bruce. He probably knows which shipper can get it done for the lowest buck.
Hans
I got my Coilers always arond Dollars 100.-- to the Netherlands from Bruce.
Aracan
Asking Bruce was the first thing I did, of course. He couldn't come up with anything below the rates I quoted, at least not off the top of his head ... Maybe it's because the Netherlands are more of a global freight hub than my neck of the woods? Hans
I think so because airport Schiphol in the Netherlands is one of the bussiest airports in europe (most traffic movements): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_busiest_airports_by_traffic_movements
scrutton
How about getting it shipped to a PO Box in the Netherlands, and then taking the train to go pick it up? Or flying to Canada and bringing it back on the plane? Not great cost effective ideas, but might make for a fun trip.
Hans
You can send it to me, I am in Austria from the 5th of March for a whole week and after that for another three days at the WCS. Can I test an extra Coiler ;)
Aracan
Thanks for the offer! But as I said, I haven't ordered a board yet - I think three weeks is rather short notice :(
Chris Houghton
I calculated $192 Cdn $ for a 185cm box at the Canada Post website. Still expensive. FedEx $224, even worse than Canada Post. The DHL website is down for rates until Monday. There must be a cheaper method if timing is not critical. Aracan
There must be a cheaper method if timing is not critical. That's what I thought, believing in the old adage that you can have things fast, cheap or high-quality: pick two. However, after a few days of searching the web, asking around and posting on a number of discussion boards, I'm beginning to doubt it. For such a small shipment, there is apparently no real trade-off of time against cost. The only choices seem to be "fast & expensive" and "even faster & outrageous".
