canuckcarver Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 anyone ever been to big white in early - mid january? im headed out there i hope.. dont really know what to expect especially in an el nino winter. also, does the powder there really necessitate a powder board ?. im in the market for a 4WD or ATV style board anyway i hope that would be enough Quote
Fleaman Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 I have never been to big white yet but I am sure the snow conditions are similar to my home mountain Apex(you can see big white from our peak about 80km away) A atv or all mountain board will be more than adequate. Unless you get a freak storm most powder days here is less than 30cm. Quote
vapor Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Big white in mid jan can be a tossup, but it ususally follows a pattern of dumping hard in december, then tapering off in jan.You wont go wrong bringing an allmountain board though. In past years where its been thin everywhere else in the province we have seemed to have gotten the best coverage. canuckcarver Posted September 6, 2009 Author Report Posted September 6, 2009 great thanks for the info.. Quote
Victory Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 This year on January 15th there was an inversion that lasted about a week. It was 15 Degrees C on the top of the hill with Spring slush conditions. I'm not sure if that's normal for Big White as it was my first time there in years. Quote
canuckcarver Posted September 7, 2009 Author Report Posted September 7, 2009 15C ? hmm... thats a bit discomforting. i hope the patios are nice then.. Quote
Fleaman Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 its nickname is Big Whiteout too! The pineapple express come by a few times a year with warm weather but it's not too bad. Quote
P06781 Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 I have been to both big white and silverstar the last 2 years on the way to cat skiing . It was the first week in Jan and the coverage was a little thin but thought grooming was great. Thecat skiing was good with lots of new snow. I think last year was when a employee died in bounds at big white from a avy? Jim Quote
