These prices are expected to rise another 4 percent in the next month. Gasoline is up 8.9% in the past 3 months, up 17% since 2001. I am sure the SUV market will slip in sales if this continued. This is insane! I was wondering what is gas prices in other states? I don't know if this is true, but a group of Long Islanders are sending out emails to tell people for one day not to buy gas. This is the email: DON'T BUY GAS ON MAY 19TH IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES. AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES. THEREFORE MAY 19TH HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT UP THEIR behind " DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY. THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT. WAITING ON THIS ADMINISTRATION TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO? REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. I dont know the conversion but its still ass expensive especially when we run the snow machines year round when the dogs from the dogsled usually tire out by June! Methanol and Ethenol powered cars have been proven in tests and you can even buy your own conversion kits. They have not made it to market for alot of reasons why other cool, fuel saving inventions haven't... the oil companies are ensuring they squeeze every penny out of their monopoly while they still can. I dunno my one question is this: in the months after sept 11th...when everyone was in shock and wasnt spending money, how is it that gas prices dropped to below $1? Well since a liter is roughtly a quart and there are 4 quarts to a gallon, you were paying at lest $3.50 a gallon, which even in canadian dollars is a lot. Gas in the burg is 1.81. Im not a socialist, but there are certain things I think otta be made public sector, and fuel is one of em non-profit, govt run fuel stations. My AP Chemistry teacher, who also rides his bike to school, lets me park it in the back lab rooms where students normally have no access. I guess I am lucky that I am the best chemist in the school so he naturally is more inclined to give me special privilege. One day I was wheeling my bike out and a girl in a remedial chem class asked, "Why didn't you drive?" I replied, "I thought I would go green." She stared back with a dumb look on her face. "He means he wants to protect the environment," my teacher clarified in his British accent. I guess I just don't get it. I go to arguably the most affluent school in the state. Every day nearly every student drives to school. The word carpool is considered taboo, the bus is simply unheard of, and to ride a bike is considered to be "weird." That is why gas is going up. The reason for this is if you look on the pump there is a sticker that says you are paying 0.40 + cents tax per gallon of gas, this tax is always assessed no matter what the wholesale/retail price of gas is. We also have a spike in prices when the fall season approaches because we have to use the reformulated gasoline for emission controls, during the cooler temps. One funny reason that i heard that we need to tuse the reformulated gas is in the fall/winter is that the leaves have fallen off the trees and therefore, the trees cannot convert the carbon dioxide into oxygen as efficiently as the trees can during the summer months. The reformulated crap is supplemented with MTBE, which dilutes the gas and you don't get as many BTU's per combustion in the engine. Use more gas, buy more gas, produce more CO2, is this thing cyclical or what???? Another funny thing is that the MTBE that they use in the fuel, is once it passes through the exhaust pipe, it falls into our resevoirs and pollutes the drinking water. Some resevoirs won't let you launch your boat if you have MTBE fuel in your boat's fuel tank. There's only one problem with this otherwise excellent plan - I doubt many people would vote for me. I guess I'd need to rely on armed invasion for the purpose of regime change. With gasoline prices around $2 a gallon (average), operating 2 vehicles that get 20mpg(average) and Travel 15,000 miles, each would cost about $3,000 just for gas. (Plus or minus) Ouch! And if you have at least 1 SUV, forget! Star doing your tune-ups. They help a lot! Poor tuning can mean as much as 4% more fuel wasted. Underinflated tires can drink up as much as 3% lost. Using the right oil help improve performance. Every 5 mph above 60mph is like paying 10 cents more per gallon. Also aggressive driving can cut highway mileage by 33%! De-junk the trunk. For each 100lbs you remove from your car, the mileage rises about 2% Large items on the roof can cost you about 5%. Not all the time, but cruise control can help improve fuel economy. Turn off the engine if you know you will be sitting for while. Like a drive-thru at your local bank. Several short trips from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distane with a warm engine. And this is obvious. If you have 2 vehicles, (like me) use the one that gets better mileage. I heard that CA might reach around $2.89 by the summer? Yikes! When I said that I was being "green" perhaps "relatively green" would have been better. This is especially true when you compare somebody like me to my friend (who is 17) who drives daddy's $45k MDX around town. Also, I am not planning on pursuing a chemistry degree/occupation. knoch Posted May 17, 2004 Report Share Posted May 17, 2004 D-sub, gas is priced different by loacation because people are taxed different by location, for example, if we here in michigan were to buy a new car, we would pay a tax on that purchase but one thats not so bad, and our gas is around $2.10 right now. But if you were to go to Georgia, you'd pay a ginormous tax when you bought a new car something, but they usually run about $.30 cheaper there than us. Its too bad I'm a douche bag and don't know any of the exacts on the taxes and whatnot, but i know that plays a large part in the differences because we pay more tax on gas then them and less on the original purchase of the vehicles... Just to remind that 50% of euro cars take an average 45-50 mpg! why get a SUV when u can get a 7 seater with 4WD and such a economical mpg!
