Mine sure came in handy today. I had to get something notarized during lunch. The place I went to was closed, so I hit "Maps", typed "Notary" in the search field, touched on the pin that appeared on the map, touched on the phone number to make the call, and was talking to the guy in less than a minute. Just like in the iPhone commercials :-)

I updated the firmware to 2.0.1 a few days ago too, and it hasn't crashed since.

Terry, thanks for the tip on the antenna.

who's dropping their iphone for the Google/TMobile G1 at the end of October?

i'm glad i sold mine a month ago :eplus2:

android phones may be alright in a year or five but as of right now I'm far from sold. Probably will be just as good as iphone, symbian and the rest once it's a mature product.

the iphone was not really worth it until the app store

I guess the android platform presents some huge issues for developers so expect to see less software than for the iphone, later though it might be good.

the g1 looks like a POS though rip off of both a nokia and a iphone, fouck that. when there's some good hardware for the platform it will be worth the look. IMHO anything that tries it's hardest to look like a iphone is not worth 179 when a iphone is 199.........

why go generic when you can have the real thing for the same price because the android phone only comes with a 1 gb card so by the time you buy a mem card for the g1 you have spent as much as a iphone. now ad a decent data plan to work with the android phone and you're in the same price point for monthly bills too.

i agree the G1 leaves something to be desired in terms of aesthetic appeal. though i do believe it wont take that long to get programs out. people have been working with android for awhile already.

there's talk that Sony Ericsson might be releasing Android on it's Xperia phone in the future. others will eventually follow. they're going to have the "Android market" as a rival to the App Store and Amazon mp3 store. though they're going to be behind awhile. i think TMobile will be the limiting factor at this point.

oh well... i'll probably be getting a Nokia for now anyway.

yeah, I guess the problem with the platform is that developing software for devices that the hardware is diverse but also needs to be very tightly integrated with the hardware because of small memory space and fairly weak cpus and gpus is going to lead to extensive testing on many phones to get apps working well. then every time a new phone comes out your app may not run on it.

All that said, from what I've seen, android is the only thing that competes with the iphone in terms of a both snazzy and functional OS. Windows mobile is a joke and symbian is just okay. Windows mobile is supposed to do a lot of things and fail miserably even at making calls on some phones. Symbian is just sorta like extending the OS on a basic cell phone, it works but feel terribly clunky sometimes.

yeah, Kent is having a wet dream of those ads the one he says are telling the "truth"

the best part is that the "truth" was made on a macintosh http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2008/09/19/microsofts-im-a-pc-ads-created-on-macs/

It's cool some of the photos were made with a Mac (Crispin's photos), although most were on a PC. Most wcm workflows contain a metadata stripper. So....well, cough, cough. You just never know if there was a reason for that.

Carry on.
