Powercarver129 Posted January 16, 2008 Report Share Posted January 16, 2008 I've been racing for 2 years, riding for 7, in softboots for the USASA, and I want to take it to the next level. I curretnly ride a 147 forum freestyle so I desperately need a new setup. I'm 5'11" 140 lbs 17 years old. I race slalom and GS and I might consider using the hardboot setup for boardercross too. If I can get the alpine board down by April I will be a serious competitor at nationals this year. I have a very limited budget. My biggest question: I have a 167 with bindings offered to me at $125. Should I take it? The real problem is that I race SL and GS, and it seems like idealy i want about a 155 and a 175. but this is a good price... so could i use the 167 for both, and should i buy it? Having two boards, one specific to each discipline will help you more than one board that really isn't specific to either SL or GS. I might pass on that offer, unless you're looking for an extra carving board. I once had a 167 Burton FP with, like a 14M SCR (Sidecut Radius) and like you, I thought it would work in both GS and SL courses. GS was.."okay".. but with that darn sidecut, I had an awful time getting it to turn quick enough through the SL course. When I ditched it for a 9M SCR board, SL was fun again. I'm now riding a 166, 9.8M SCR..and a 185, 16M SCR.. ..but I'm also kindofa monster - at 6'5" - 225lbs. Powercarver129: I see you're new - Welcome to Bomber! Where are you located? BlueB Posted January 17, 2008 Report Share Posted January 17, 2008 Skip the Alp, it's more of an AM-carver. SCR on it is almost as tight as on an SL board - 10.5m... I quite like Generics boards. However, the one you picked is the Peak series, AM carver. Look at the 160 that same seller has got listed. It's a tad narrower and has more contact edge. Also, look at the Oxygen Proton 172 in the classifieds. It would be a real nice budget GS board. There's a Cocoon Lotus 164, in the ads, too. I had that one before, It's high-energy and very stiff. Keeping in mind that I have never ridden hardboots before, do you still recommend the 137 effective edge over 133.5? And just how cheap are you thinking for the Nidecker 156? Edges=thin...>? Scuff Posted January 17, 2008 Report Share Posted January 17, 2008 I wouldn't get the Alp for racing.. it's an alright freecarver, but it's soft flex doesn't do so well in the course. That e-bay seller is associated with a retail shop just up the road from us here in MN and they sometimes get used or overstock alpine gear. We've got a couple of junior riders on our team riding the "Generics" brand boards right now. They seem to be pretty decent starter boards. My wife rides the 151 and 171 generics boards..and likes them just fine. One day I free rode her 171 - not a bad ride. For racing they work best for the younger/lighter weight guys and women, but the trend has been that after a season or two they master the basics of carving and start to overpower the board, then upgrade to a stiffer board with more 'grip' in the turns. Many have gone to the F2's - the 154SL and 168-173 for GS. The 155-163 sounds like a pretty good range for you to look for SL boards.
