Its not that essential, tho its' useful to have a type of "Knee-brace-pad-combination" as well as those shin bang guards. But my reasoning is thus: If I don't wear the speed suit then I will always think that I could have gone faster and that's why I didn't win. ( Hah!) With the suit I know that I have no excuses at the end of my run. Used to do quite a few super G and some downhill. And a suit makes a big difference in speed events.
