  1. Yeah, right... free stuff... don't we all ! I'm hoping to find a set of bindings to have on hand should my girlfriend want to try hardbooting. I don't want to lay out a lot of cash for a set of bindings that may not get used right away. (we are in Iowa) She would probably try out hardbooting on her burton board and so a 3D disk seems the thing to do. She's athletic but reserved and so I don't think for trying it out she would need a very robust binding. TDs, Catek etc would be way overkill. Well used (but not used-up or abused) would be fine. If she finds she likes it and wants to dump her softie setup I'll probably give her my Burton race plates and pick up a set of TDs for myself. ANYBODY GOT STUFF IN THEIR CLOSET/GARAGE/BASEMENT THAT NEEDS TO GO BUT NOBODY WILL BUY AND YOU DON"T WANT TO THROW IT OUT???? TALK TO ME!!!
  2. after saving the image and altering brightness & contrast I can see every detail... why didn't I think of that before???
  3. I've got a viewing problem on my PC at work (oops.... I'm on my own time now) Often I cannot see detail because images are very dark. I was hoping for 3D 'cause Dawn's board is Burton
  4. want to pick up a set of hardboot bindings to have on hand if girlfriend wants to try... so looking low $$ Dan Blake... from the looks of the image the bails are for adult boots
  5. that reminds me... once long ago I had borrowed a large fannypack. Mid day I rolled up my jacket and stowed it outside the fannypack with its lashing straps. Next time I got on a lift I didn't have enough 'cheek engagment' and got dropped off the chair as it left the ramp. Many laughs for all  . With my current setup I need to be careful with the straps and buckles etc. because they might get trapped in the structure of the lift chair. One time I did have a brief snag that held me for a moment, then I pulled loose. I had visions of me dangling by my packstrap from the chair all the way to the bottom.
  6. Thanks.. I agree about having one if for nothing other than staying hydrated. I've got a couple of Blackburn hydration packs for mountain biking. What is of most interest to me on this thread is carrying gear. When I hike with skis and board I think I've got a good setup but wonder if there is something better out there. My Osprey has compression straps that work well so the pack stays very close to my body when not carrying skis/board. got to run... movie time!!
  7. What kind of pack do you use? What do you like/hate/tolerate about it? I use a pack made by 'Osprey', model Switch 25+5. This pack was designed for skiing/boarding. It lets me carry my skis (oh shut up) in 'A-frame' and strap on my board vertically at the same time. Then I drape my ski boots over and hike around in my soft boots. The pack has an integrated hydration system and nice strap setup. I keep my radio in a small zippered pouch on the waist strap. Carrying my gear like this lets me get around fairly well, keeping my hands free and keeps me from getting sore, etc. Sometimes I have trouble with shuttle buses because the fully loaded setup cannot be stowed outside the bus (sometimes I just throw it on top of a van). Has anyone got anything that works really well? Anything to stay away from??
  8. I live in IOWA. Our ski club goes to a different area every year and so it is difficult to develop any kind of history with a shop. And since our group is not very outgoing we have no local contacts when we get somewhere. Being the only rider in the club, I'm kind of an outcast anyway. What I hope to do is post here before I go anywhere and get feedback from hardbooters about shops in a given resort area. Which brings me to this... I'm going to be in Park City (on my own) Dec 10-17. Why hasn't anyone sacrificed numerous virgins to the snow gods??? GET WITH IT, BORDY!!
  9. When I've dropped off gear to be worked on I've asked if they'd do specific angles and they've replied "you'll get what we give you". Are there any shops around that will do requests? I've typically stayed at places that don't accomodate do-it-yourself tuning & waxing. Besides, it is tough to bring the required vises, fixtures, files, stones, iron, scrapers, ptex, waxes, yada yada yada.
  10. back in the mid 70's I was on a trip with my family. We had rented a motor home. The plan was to attend a relative's wedding (500 mile drive there) then take a couple of weeks vacation around northern Wisconsin and Canada. I was the only person of my family of 5 that did not smoke. On the way to the wedding everyone was smoking up a storm and I thought I would croak from the smoke. I was starting to have serious concerns about my ability to breathe. They basicly said 'quit your whining'. I spent 499 miles at a window directing air my way. When we arrived I was as sick as a dog. After the wedding I asked my family and relatives (more smokers) to borrow me some cash so I could take a bus home rather than put up with 2 weeks of poision. They basicly said 'don't be such a baby'. I realized I would not be able, in good concsience or good spirits continue on with all that smoke. My miserable state would not be good for anyone's vacation. At that point I took my bicycle off the rack, packed the one pannier I had brought with a few items and set off, peddaling the 500 miles back home. (I had done a few long bike tours over the years so this wasn't anything unusual) what really pissed me off was all the smokers that did not care to concern themselves with the effects smoke was having on me. To this day I have a distinct sensitivity to smoke and typically will not associate with smokers. I am really blessed to be in a work envirionment which will not allow smoking.
  11. We here in the states have a different attitude towards tipping than I've seen elsewhere. In Germany a restuarant proprieter was IMO being exceptionally gracious over a period of days, taking great care of my son and I, and so I wanted to show my appreciation at the end of our stay. He seemed offended by my tipping him! When someone significantly exceeds my base expectation I want to let them know it meant something to me. At a "subway" type situation they would have to build me one heck of a sandwich or whatever to merit anything. One time when hang gliding at Chelan I landed out and needed to catch a lift back to town because our chase crew was headed the other direction. A nice local gave me a ride. I tried to give him a few bucks but he resisted. Then I said "look at it this way, guy... these bucks equal 2 sixpacks, and this ride was definitly worth that to me." He accepted when put in those terms.

  14. SWriverstone Scott So you are a 'diver driver' I flew for years when I lived in SoCAl and did the Owens Valley every other weekend. Still got my WillsWing HP out in the garage. At that time there was a fair number of 2m radio and a lot of CB. I flew with a hopped up CB and long trailing wire antenna. I'm somewhat of a techno-geek. I work for a radio manufacturing company that sells to military. Simply put, there is so very little total frequency difference betweem channel 1 and channel 22 when compared to the entire radio spectrum that the additional range which might be possible using 22 vs 1 would be almost impossible to notice. Our best bet is to use the highest output power and realize that terrain is our biggest problem. These frequencies are strictly LOS (line of sight). I'd be careful not to be too chatty at 5w xmt pwr because battery life can be very short. Cold temps rob battery capacity also, and so we have a double whammy. I keep extra battery set in an inside pocket so they stay warm. I carry my radio in a small pouch on my pack's waist strap so I can hear it but it gets cold there.
  15. all carve, all day ! Tune in at ???? on your radio dial. And now a word from our sponsor..... Fin, take it away! Seriously, a common hookup channel is needed. I realize most will migrate to a private channel setting, but most radios will scan. How about posting the "carver-channel du Jour" at the liftside message boards?
  16. My gal of 3 1/2 yrs is really active but cold is getting to be a real problem. Dawn suffers from Fibromyalgia and cold agravates it. She has always enjoyed being sports active (long track speed skating on ice) roller hockey with her children, snowboarding from way back, skiing, bike riding etc... Bless her heart:1luvu: We do go skiing and boarding quite a bit. Our skill levels and strength/endurance differ quite a bit, so we do split up and go separate ways from time to time. But when we are together on the slopes it is really great to be around her. I'm looking forward and wondering how much longer her body can hold up, when it will be time to trade her in on a pair of 25 yr olds.... NO... in all honesty, I'm seriously considering how much time we spend in these athletics so that she's not tempted to over-do it. I'm hoping for a long and comfortable life for us!!
  17. When we do things my gal contributes to whatever extent she can. She's not flush with cash but doesn't want to be a freeloader. I'm happy to pick up the tab. excellent fringe benefits (she is a massage therapist specializing in neuromuscular pain relief) You may have seen her picture on the carving calendar thread.
  18. A friend and I had been doing some winter hunting in the Badlands of western South Dakota. I told my buddy that I'd meet him at Terry Peak (in the Black Hills around Lead/Deadwood) for some skiing. When we met up he was wearing his COMPLETELY WHITE winter camo hunting suit. In a slight haze he was completely invisible on the slopes. Under typical conditions he was difficult to see unless you were fairly near and looking for him. More than once I had the illusion of runaway loose skis! I convinced him to reverse the camo to show the "woodland" pattern.
  19. How does it look for Utah early December? (10-17) Last year I was there 1st week of Dec and had great time. Looking bleak so far. All webcams depressing. :( Is it too early to start sacrifice of virgins? If PC, Canyons, (Deer Valley for the skiers in my group), Snowbird/Alta are poor... where to?? (lodging at PC)
  20. Yeah, things are still way to brown out there. Why don't the locals kidnap the weathermen and make them bring powder dumps??? slackers!
  21. wherever your going...I'm jealous... Park City, babeee Dec 10 - 17
  22. Never done this before... I've got three boards and a pair of skis to fit into a Burton wheely for airtravel. Lots of room but I want to pack well to avoid damage and overweight charges. I've removed bindings from everything and will lay everything in so the lengths and tips and tails all work together. I plan on using corrigated cardboard folded Z fashion to keep everything separated. I plan on tying the skis to the cardboard to keep them from shifting. Anybody got any guideance on what works AND DOESN'T???

    Nidecker for $275

Don't let me get in the way here... If anyone wants to jump on this board for more than my $$, be my guest. It will not break my heart ( you just might save me from breaking my legs!). Brad
  24. bjvircks

    Nidecker for $275

If you're new to hardboot riding, this thing may not be the best choice. Nidecker puts the inserts so far back I feel like I've only got 6 inches of board behind my back foot (gasp, that's all that's there!). Seriously, not such a great choice for a new rider. Of course this is only my opinion and not based on any practical information or derived facts, just my own experience with Nidecker compared to the others. Chris said some quite worthwhile things above... Very unlikely I would ever go above $100. During the season this board may move for more, more :) for you. Could you move it on eBay? (craft a good but true backstory) all the best Brad
