Hello Wally, Thinking the same think and was wondering if you had an update on the boots/board and boots/ski performance? Also, what size boot are you using and what is the width of your board? What angles do you have to run to eliminate boot overhang? Thanks, John

Ron, Thanks for the offer. I now have to work out the logistics and timing and will take you up on the offer when I know the dates. John

Hello, I have a chance to add a couple of days onto a business trip and was wondering what the conditions are right now at Snowbird and what the best carving slopes are? Thanks in advance for your help, John

Reminder: Soft Snow, Broken Boards, Broken Bones
JohnO'Brien replied to Buell's topic in Carving Central
I broke my ankle for two reasons. Firstly, soft snow made me overconfident as I was able to carve faster and tighter turns and thus pushed my equipment and body to limits beyond my ability. As they say in racing, I ran out of talent. Secondly, the equipment we are using is getting so much better that we are able to turn harder and faster than before, again allowing us to carve faster and tighter turns putting us into difficult situations that we were never in before. Most of my older boards had stiffer flex patterns which did not fold on soft/spring conditions. For a while, boards were built with too much flex at the front of the board. I think the newer style boards have less flex in the nose and more between the feet with will reduce these accidents in the future. I think these two factors increase the injury dramatically, as I think we have seen more posts of injuries this year than in the past. -
Spring day, soft snow and my boots in a soft setup and the front of my board folded up on a hard toe side turn. Went over the handlebars and felt a sharp pain in my ankle. Ended up being a fractured talus. They wanted me in a cast for 6 weeks which I had them remove at 4 weeks. Was told to take it easy and get Physio right away. Was active within a few weeks after some aggressive treatments from my sister who is a physio. She says doctors are very conservative when it comes to talus fractures as blood flow is not good at that bone, but she said if x rays showed bone healing then get at the stretching quickly and hard which I did. I think you are done for the season, but should be OK to go soon. Hope you heal fast. John

My day at Keystone with Mountain Watch and Patrol
JohnO'Brien replied to fin's topic in Carving Central
As a former ski patrol I can tell you that it attracts many forms of skiers and boarders. I was a student, so I was just looking for free skiing and food to get more time on the slopes, we made up about half the patrol. The other large group are the skiers that like these types of organizations, most liking the authority it gives them and the political structure that comes with the organization. There are lots of other categories, but these were the two most prominent, and by nature, did not hang out together. That was 30 years ago, so things might have changed but not likely. Fin, I think you found one of the authoritative types that like the power and the position and maybe has an anti-snowboarder attitude. By not recognizing his position, you in effect disrespected him and that really pisses these type off real bad as respect is the thing they need to keep being in the patrol. The fact that another patrol was witnessing this just escalated the situation further. I agree with you in the way you handled them as this could have escalated and ended up out of control if you invited further discussion with him without the desire to let him win the argument. Resorts put up with the authoritative types as they usually end up being patrol leaders and the link to resort management. The resort cannot operate without a patrol for insurance reasons. I saw lots of customers challenge these guys and few won anything more than a minimal apology to try to end the dispute and appease the patrol. On the other hand, ski patrol (and I am sure MW) really is a tough job sometimes, especially when you get big crowds and tight surroundings. Toss in a few jerks and your day can be quite unpleasant. Most patrol and probably MW are given little respect and the only power they have is to clip a pass or give a warning. I did neither during 7 years of patrol as there were always other means of dealing with situations as long as you keep your head about you. Each patrol had guys who treated clipped tickets and warning as trophies that gave them the attention that they needed. Ironically, most of the authoritative types had subordinate positions as day jobs, so maybe patrol gave them the ability to balance off all the crap they put up with during the day and get to dish it out on weekends. I am sure that the mountain has some sort of daily/weekly meeting, so maybe this incident can be used as a means of assisting them in understanding the customers thoughts and at the same time allow some dialogue between the two groups (boarders and patrol/MW) to bring any hostilities out and be dealt with. Why not suggest that you work along side with them to define the speed issue. For the record, I voted that you were not travelling with excessive speed. -
Count me in. John O'Brien

That's not good! I am traveling with a colleague, so thanks for the offer of a ride. Guess we will head up to Whistler instead. What are the conditions like up there? Can you rent alpine boards at whistler? Thanks, John

Heading there this weekend and that looks like a great snowboarding run. Do you know the name of it so I can head over there.

He wanted the same trust from me, so not sure what the issue is. Offered to pay $7.50 and would send me the balance if shipping was more when he received the heels . 4 others were in line to buy them. My online Canada Post calculator came to $18.50. Anyway, Adam won them, so not for sale anymore.
