From what I learned on the Coiler Metals is that they will still turn on a dime with large SCR, becuase of the metal. I was on a RC 180 15-16-15 SCR metal of bruces at ECES and it did whatever I wanted it to do. My Riot Velocity has a 14 SCR and it need s agood bit of room to run. I thought it would take more room to let the RC180 run, but it reminded me of a buttery smooth MADD 158. Small arcs. big arcs. laid out stuff, adjustment in mid turns.

If you have more open terrian you may consider a larger SCR. It will turn tight with a little nudging.

I cant wait to see Cafer on his this weekend. I will get full specs this weekend Cafer

  2. Shooting for 7:30 am base lodge, usually head right to the lift and park opposite side of road from Handicap. Whatever time you get there, just keep an eye for us on challenge or Razor. I think ski team is done for the year so beat the crowds and get em in before it gets crowded and slushed out.

I will be in a black dodge Magnum, Jesse is in a green Subaru sedan.

    Hope to see you there.

I will bring my Riot Velocity for anyone who wants to try it, it;s a beast but if you are heavier it should be tolerable.

  3. I got back into skating last summer and it tremendously help keep the rust, boredom off and the muscles twitching for the snow season. I even found myself desiring skating this winter instead of carving.. My wife wouldn't let me buy the deck I wanted so she approved the building and about 10 boards later, i have it down to a pretty good process. One set back is my laser engraver guy went out of business. Part of my marketing was to put custom laser engraving on each board, now its just back to building decks. My wife wont follow me, she gets too nervous, especially when I do DH. Top speed last summer was 51 mph, looking for 60+ this summer.

Search "mother road" on BOL for a hill I did this past summer. I started carving and then got the downhill speed bug, so I bought leathers. JBS and I have some local hills we do here, but there are some goos ones in NJ. I am looking to build a slalom deck for him and I to do some cones this summer. I suprised JBS with a speed deck for his Birthday at ECES the night of the banquet.

I could get you on a custom built deck for about $90, then add cost of decent trucks, bearing s and wheels. dont forget pads too, well worth. you need to of course accept responsibility in riding it and hold me harmless.

POW- yea that was me on the pea green pogo, Stowe was slightly tight for what that thing likes to run. i had it at blue yesterday and it was just eating up with speed and big open arcs. It can be pushed for tighter stuff, but it is a machine. As far as price, looking at $650 shipped or something in that area.

  4. As far as the POGO's , that will all be dependent on how many longboard skate decks I build and sell this summer. I have about 6 pre-orders. If I dont earn enough extra cash, then some of the whole quiver will go.

  5. One bare spot and it is under the six pack in the lower board park, no worries,.

Razor and everything else is wide open and hope crowds dont show and they decide on some spring cleaning. some folks may be coming down from north jersey too to carve.

I saw ernie's board at ECES, what a gem!!!! BADA$$!!!! It was one of the boards I saw that is making me get a new metal coiler. Ernie would you mind posting your specs because I am wrestling a bit with what i am going to order. what do you weigh? And what program did you use for your custom topsheet. I have a friend of mine working on the customgraphics for me. those are some eye popping graphics you did especially in person.

So is that a cancel on the plates you wanted me to make? I bought the material, I will just make a new set for when the Coiler arrives. I'd stay away from plexi, stick with lexan or wait for the other plates.

  6. Cafer

Sweet!!!! I am in process with bruce right now for a build.

    Any taper on it?

You still gonna take it out in the rain this weekend?

I should be out as long as it isnt cats and dogs.

I was out for lunch today. It was good to above average, fast!!!

Do you still wanta set of my plates, I see you have a set? If you do Do you want them that shape or more square? Need width of board at you binding placement.

  7. It's been a while since I have been there about 8 years and it was on a freeride board, not hardboots.

I rememebr runs under Eagle express lift at Solitude to be nice groomed cruisers, even in soft set up so hard boots would be cool.

I dont remember Brighton so much for groomers, I spent s good bit of my time searching tress and stuff.

I love Snowbird, but it seems most of what is there is for freeriding and freestyle, not carving but I could be wrong. Once again it was a place I spent the day exploring.

For carving I would hit Solitude, but I could be wrong.

    Check the trail maps.

  8. I can let you borrow my other plates if I dont get them done. Bruce hinted towards not using Cateks on his decks, but the plates would help. Just need to make sure screw length is proper.

Board sounds great. you will be blown away by its buttery smoothnees compared to anything else especially the volant.

I am thinking the following specs

    RC 180

    20cm waist

    15-16-15 SCR

    1cm taper

3mm decambered rounded tail (from the schtubby)

    Even flex throughout

I dont known what the effective edge would be.

But also looking for a board that has manueverability and can sink its teeth into the hard stuff and it seems the metal softer flex will accomodate that.

Pics of ECES didnt turn out as well as I wanted, I was busy trying to tame the POGO on most of that stuff, while I watched metal coilers cruise smoothly in control, effortless, bring some tissues becuase you may cry at how well it will ride. I hope uyou get some good stiff snow to try its ability.

  9. My fullface helmet and body armor has saved me more than once on rear ending straightliners at the mountain I ride. While I am very selective in crowd openings, there are always at least a couple per day that manage to come closer than what I find comfortable and as indicted have plowed me.

I dont wear my fullface for the fashion show, I wear it because it protects me. He didnt ask if the fullface would make him a better rider , he asked for opinions on the helmets that are out there. I also dont find my helmet or armor to be constrictive or overweight. just like I wear my leathers for downhill skateboarding for anything over 40mph. I should wear at slower speeds even, but I dont. Looks silly, but keeps the skin on my rump.

If you are fortunate enough to ride at an open mountain with minimal straightliners, then great for you. But I think if someone is interested in protecting themselves at a higher level , why deter them from it?

  10. Cafer

Which Coiler metal did you get. I got to demo a few at ECESand fell in love with metal period. I tried a RC180 which was out of this world and I am in process with Bruce for a custom build. did you get to ride it yet? If not you will hoefully be tickled pink, JBS and I couldnt shut up about them.

I bought material for your plates, just have not had a chance to get to them and I am currently having a joint inflamation episode, which limits my tool working abilities but I will get to them ASAP.

I am open most any day, except next week.

  11. I will say, I watched on in envy of those folks who were on the BV Metals, smooth, relaxed, controlled effortless turns, no chatter, grinning, almost smooth enough to pour a Guiness in mid carve. My small quiver is going on the auction block to fund a build for next season. I too have seen the light.

I was able to demo the RC T80 later that afternoon and was almost brought to tears in how well it rode, topsheet or not, that thing was perfect, I cant imagine how well the Schtubby that Geoff was on worked. It looked perfect too.

    Genius!!!!

  12. Now that the season is drawing to a close in a month or so, looking to see if anyone wants to get together for the Annual Attempt at Blue Mountain Expression Session. JBS and I try to get some folks together each year to ride on a Friday. We have had variable turnouts each year and hoping to bolster higher turnouts.

We dont do anything special, we just show up and ride. Maybe JBS and I could put on a little clinic, he is the technique geek, so that would be up to him.

Looks like 21st and 28th may be the only days, unless this Friday which is very short notice.

    Let me know.

  13. Rich,

Couple things that have helped me

    • higher angles have allowed my hips to square up (70/67)
    • pretend you are wyatt earp and gunsling stance
    • on heelside, focu on keeping that rear hand down and driven towards your front boot. Too man y times I find my rear hand out and up and it needs to be in and forward. It helps bring those hips around.
    • bend your knees, and I often reach and grab my front boot toe, it seems to drive my edge in much better.
    • how is your heelside confidence level, I sometimes see folks remain in a freestyle stance becasue it is odd for them to rotate and they are use to sideslipping, which your hips remain perpendicular tot he board. In alpine the hips should be paralell, even when you are sideslipping on an alpine.
    • PS my spelling and typing sux.
    • if you can get up to blue moutain PA, JBS and I can help you out.

    good luck to you.

  14. Thanks John, but i allow myself to get the JBS Tune here in PA. Jesse does a great job of prepping my boards for me.

Maybe someday a PTS, but we will see how the JBS fairs to the PTS, I think the eastern PA contingent will hold their own on this trip.

    Counting down

Sunday, Monday Tuesday (travelday) and carving wed, thru, friday.

  15. Good info and got it resolved last Sunday. Post examination I come up with the following:

    • I outward canted my discs, which gave me a little more drive into the turns
    • JBS , who I ride with thought it was a timing thing for me and after a run or two the confidence came back and rhythm intact
    • snow was much better than past few days
    • as far as breathing, I purposefully have always maintianed fluid breathing in my turns because if I hold my breath, thigh start to burn more quickly
    • I still the felt my heelside was favored at one point, so I shifted the rear toe edgeward, which then helped balance the board at neutral.

It has seem to come together finally and back to old Greg. Thanks for the input and the boot bias definitelyt helped me hone it down.

look out ECES here we come!!!!!

No he is referring tom me. I have had a "bang" up season this year. From launching into a pine tree and pile of rocks, to bad case of shin bang to not getting out of a toeside and going head and shoulder first into a rock bed.

Mending broken or heavily bruised ribs and knees form landing on a pile of rocks

Shin bang from losing an edge and the board does that biting thing in the snow

Scuffed up shoulder from the rock bed and cracked helmet.

All will be good for ECES, and fionally got my TD2's dialed in.

    Greg

PS I was wondering if Jesse got a separate trophy for the gates racing this year 2008, different from three years ago when you disqualified me for passing on the wrong side of an 8" bamboo stick finish line at RT, even when I had the fastest time ;). He was kind enough to let me borrow the 2006 trophy for a week, I took it to work, displayed it on my mantle, when swimming at the local YMCA with it, had a mini parade here in Easton, sponsored by Larry Holmes. Some day I will be back to acquire the trophy that is rightfully mine:biggthump

PSS Dont let him ride gates too much, becuase it seems he would be more into running gates with you than freecarving with me and he is the only riding friend I have ever had.;)

  17. Biggest things that helped me

    • start at shallow angles 45* or so and increase as you get more comfortable
    • I use the pencil pinch drill
    • i ride gun shooter style
    • shoulders square to the bottom of the hill will come evntually
    • do the hands forward, but i was given a tip once to exaggerate your inside elbow up, dont reach for the snow
    • dont expectto be laying down turns the first week, unless you get to ride everyday with some one helping you
    • even then it is a challenge during the beginning
    • once you start making connected turns and the board angulates more, trust it. in most good snow it knows how to make the turn you feel it leading you through
always watch your back and wait for openings in people,
you will find that most skiers and boarders have no idea how tight a carver can turn and are use to evryone else sideslipping along with them. They dont expect to see a rocket zooming perpendicular to the fall line and towards them. Most skiers and boards are mediocre to sh*tty so dont expect them to be able to react.
    • ride ride ride andride with others if you can. I havent met a carver yet that wont give you a few runs to help out.
      good luck

But carve dog did hit it right on the head, I felt like I was on a YZ250 today, snow inPA was finally stiff hero:biggthump
