  1. Hi DhKim,

Welcome to the team.  As a 20 year beginner I can tell you the best way to learn is to find people to ride with.  Assuming you can carve on soft boots pretty well.  You now have to overcome the roadblocks to hard booting.  Few places have rental equipment, even fewer offer lessons and learning can be painful.

    The good news:

    - Everyone you meet on an alpine board is pretty nice and willing to help.

    - The annual MCC meet up is a great place to learn and connect.

    - This forum has tons of useful advice, as does bomberonline.

    - You can find everyone else's used crap for cheap in the for sale section.

To answer your question directly you are going to have to find some loaner gear or just buy a used setup.  I saw a new Donek Pilot for sale for under $200 last week.  Then read up on technique articles, watch youtube and get out on a green run.  Hoping you find someone to ride with at your mountain.  We have a nice group of old guys in VT which doesn't help you unfortunately.

Good luck and hope you bring more people into the sport.

  2. I did Lumber Liquidators Bamboo over radiant heat in my VT house.  Definitely worth the money.  The Home Depot equivalent scratched much more easily.  I bought it four years ago so it's probably the deadly stuff, but it looks great.

Just FYI, unlike other laminates you are supposed to acclimate bamboo for four weeks.  It makes a difference and since you live in OR, I assume it's like laying floor on the bottom of the ocean.

I say go for it.  For 120 sq. feet, who cares.  If you don't like it get a throw rug.

  3. I've been on the lookout for stiff boots as an alternative to Salmon Malamutes and saw a cheap pair of K2 Aspects on eBay.  Just slipped them on for a living room soft boot session and these things are surprisingly good.  They are half BOA and half lace but super stiff.  Comparable to my Malamutes.  Haven't heard anyone on the forum speak about these in the past.

    What am I missing?

  4. Lib Tech - The Litigator and Grocer were my go to boards for years.  When magnatraction started showing up I bought old boards from Ebay until I finally switched to Donek Inclines.  Really miss the Libs for all mountain riding as I can't find anything similar.  Tried the Hot Knife and some Family Trees, but not the same confidence inspiring ride.  I would keep one around if the old ones weren't so damn expensive.  I see the Litigator and Doughboy were re-issued, but with the C3 camber and magnetraction.  Not for me.

Why not just get a Flux or Incline and be done with it?
