Hi, I haven't missed a season since switching from skis to alpine boards in 1991. And I've had my fair share of fun carving on 3 continents. But I have a confession to make: I've never succeeded at reliably laying turns, and even less linking laid-down turns (Vitelli turn anyone?). Is there someone on the East Coast who'd be willing to give me a tip or two? More specifically, I'll be at Wachusett every Sunday of the season starting next month (since the kids are in a ski club there) - red pants, black jacket, white UPS boots, black/blue Coiler that's called "Polar Vortex". Would be really great! CP

What a monster of a board! Forgive my ignorance, but is this for slalom in deep powder?

"Bruce, got board, it's amazing, you're a god!" This is a Stubby v2.0. I'm told it is only the 3rd one of its kind. Met Bruce at ECES, tried the board, and received it 2 weeks later! This was my first time working with Bruce and i was thoroughly impressed by his knowledge, patience, willingness to help and give advice, and of course the quality of the board. Tried it over the last 2 weekends and it is the board of my dreams! Thank you Bruce!

Looks like I'll only be able to make it on Friday 28 - will it be worth it? or will all the demos be gone by then? Are demos actually sold at ECES, and is there a risk that few will be left by Friday? (so far, i'd be particularly interested in trying a Kessler 168, and a Denek Proteus). Thanks for you advice for a first-timer :-) CP

Here's my personal experience... I had never had shin bang, until the day i decided to try the "euro" flat "extreme carving" setup. I immediately ended up with an awful and terribly painful case of shin bang! It took me 2 seasons to accidentally stumble upon the solution. Before that, i had tried every method and artifact known to man - including new boots adjusted by a certified bootfitter!! Then, in one day of heresy, i added to my F2's the rear cant and lift i had used for 20 years (sic)... and the damn shin bang was gone. Just like that! The explanation seems obvious now: my leg, in particular aft, was trying to fall into its natural God-intended position on the board, and the flat-set boot was relentlessly fighting against it. Once the angles were in place, the boot naturally accompanied the leg's movement as it should be! Worked for me...

Just a quick follow-up as today i had my first day after Mike (from skiMD in Framingham, MA) did his magic. Amazing. It's a new board. Mike's a super nice chap. When i met him, he seemed glad to see an alpine board, but also looked at me like i was from another planet: "your board is completely concave, and [something something] wax too hot"... well he fixed it!

Please don't fustigate me for this question, but is there any place near boston you'd recommend for board prep? I'm too lazy, and don't have to tools, skills, nor time to prep my own board. That said I've had my own share of bad experiences - including a board where someone decided to file off the top and bottom edges as if I was a half-piper!! (That was an asym Mistral I LOVED a while ago!) Anyhow, I'm in the Boston area and would love to get my board ready before heading out... (Maybe next weekend) thanks a 1,000,000! CP

Seems like a healthy debate though (the one about TDs on metal boards)... btw, I had a pair of those "UPS" boots, first with snowpros, then the Burton 3D rat trap bindings on a PJ 6.0 Asym...

Had heard so many interesting comments about the TD3 SW that i thought this might be the chance to try something new... In theory, liked the idea of lateral flex for my old bones... (also not sure i want to take them off the current board). But sounds like now there are some reservations...

Breesej and Levinnyog, that's really helpful for the TD3/UPZs. I don't care about little or big marks as long as it holds. FWIW, no pb with the screws - i tighten them from time to time... Apex Insider, i got the UPM-only info for the Kessler 168 form the Kessler-swiss website. Is that a helvetic restriction only? Also wondering what you ride it with - an Apex plate? what do you see as pros and cons for this combo vs. no-plates? Also, would you put the TD3 SW on this board, or keep the wiggly F2s? Hi, I'm thinking of getting miself a new setup: Kessler Alpine 168 + TD3 Sidewinder. I already have banged out UPZ RC-10 boots (that I wouldn't give away over by dead body). A priori no plates. Does this fit together? In theory, i'm going to wait until ECES at the end of Feb to try this out, but i'm not sure if i'll be able to wait! I have a few questions: - The Kessler has UPM inserts, do the TD3 SW fit that? - Do the UPZs fit well into the TD3s? (have always had some play in the front in my F2 Race Ti) - Should i get a plate (thinking that i prefer the more direct contact/feel; and usually have plenty of speed - but would be VERY interested in your thoughts!) A bit of background about me: Always lived in or close to the mountains. Stopped skiing in 1991 and been carving ever since (Pyrenees, Alps, Argentina, now North East). Current setup: SWOARD 175 (gen 3) + F2 Race ti + UPZ RC-10... but i'm a bit over the Swoard right now... (looking for something more aggressive, shorter, quicker, lighter). FWIW 6 ft, 185lb, out of shape Would really appreciate any experience you could share! CP

I had a great experience with the "Ski Stop" in Westwood, MA (Boston's MetroWest) a couple of years ago: http://www.skistopmass.com/services.htm I found them on a boot fitters association website. Molded soles and liners on my UPZ RC10 + banging out specific spots etc... i went 3 times, first for the molding, then twice after trying them on the slopes for tweaking... Like you i wanted truly custom-fit boots since i came from ~18 years with great *UPS* and 1 terrible year with the Head Stratos Pro...
