  1. I can't even imagine how much effort Dave. Kristin and their support crew put in to making this happen. I have to admit that when I went up on Tuesday to the flat light, the death marbles, and some of the steepest runs I've ever ridden I wondered what the hell I'd signed up for. Once the sun came back out and the hill softened up a bit, it was fantastic, and the groomer crew did miracles with what they had to work with.

Other travel plans might nix me going next year, but if you get the chance do it - it's awesome.

I was paying i-carve in Slovenia.  The transfer took 9 days to complete.  I got a note saying "Your money is taking a little longer to get to us" during that time. This was a bank funds transfer.  Maybe it was because it was my first time using Transferwise, or maybe it was my bank.

If you're with a second tier bank in the US, things can take days. We've had issues with paying US vendors from Canada. If they're with a major like Chase or JPM, they get the $ overnight or 1 day. If they're not and it has to go through routing, it can take up to 4 days to clear.

  3. You know how I learned to carve? My instructor had me start at the top of he hill, with my hands behind my back, roll down the hill a bit and then tip on to my toes, let the board hook up and carve, and ride it out to the end of the turn. No leaning, no crouching,  no fancy arm waving, standing pretty much upright for stance.

You know how long it took me to do that? An entire frigging morning. And I probably had two attempts left before I would have thrown an epic tantrum, and cried like a girl (oh, wait ...). But all it took was to get that single hook up and ride out, and cue the hallelujah chorus. Once I had that, I could repeat it. Then it took me about a quarter of the time to get it on heelside, and by the end of that day we were off to the races. I spent the next three days riding hands behind my back and by the end of the trip I could ride an entire lap of a blue run at Sun Peaks in perfect form. So simple, and so effective. So effective that if I'm having a day where I feel tentative or unbalanced on the board, I'll find a mellow run and run laps with my hands behind my back, to dial everything back in.

You can do that on any skinny run on the hill, if you want something to practice and you're going back to basics anyway. Just saying.

  4. Hope you feel better soon. Back pain sucks.

If you were here, I'd send you to my movement specialist guys - who have been amazing at fixing my weightlifting pains. One of the things I've learned from them is that pain is rarely where you think it is, and it's usually caused by imbalances somewhere else. I've dealt with knee pain that was all in my hips, and golfers elbow that was in my back. Both were long term issues that were solved literally within days, once they got traced to the right place and appropriate rehab exercises prescribed.

If you could find someone in Portland who does something similar, they might be worth a visit. I just PM'ed one of my guys, because I seem to remember he spent some time in Portland and might know people. if he comes up with anything I'll pass it on.

  5. Our local hill is home to a ski race team, and I can vouch that these kids have a definite attitude of "we own this mountain". They often haul race speed down the front of the hill getting back to the lift, never mind that there's a couple of totally blind rollers at the bottom where they'd have zero hope of avoiding anyone making a turn below them. I've been told by patrollers that "I" should avoid making carve turns on that part of the slope, because apparently it's "my" responsibility to stay out of "their" way. Uh-huh.

I doubt they were buzzing the kid here, I suspect they were just tunnel-vision straightlining down the hill and simply didn't see him until the last minute.

Mambership has its privilage  I would bet if the kids did not have the local race team jackets on the decision would have been quite different.

Had it been some teenage dirtbag snowboarders, I'm sure they'd have been booted out and told not to come back.

  6. A few too many concussions (two that came within 2 weeks of each other and ended my season). Plus a few butt-slams that had the same effect, of being actually able to feel your brain bouncing off the inside of your skull.

    Dislocated thumb.

Second degree frostbite on three toes.

That's actually about it. Guess I really do ride like a girl.

  7. Hey all, anyone local heading to Montucky for the session in Feb?

I'm planning on spending a couple of days there later in the week, maybe hitting something else on the way up and down. Maybe we can have a Canadian mini session there, and possibly coordinate some lodging/carpooling as well.

Hills are open, all my boards went in for tuning last weekend. Hoping for more days than I got last winter, this year I don't have to keep myself in one piece until August 🙂

  8. I am hanging out for next season. I did all of four days last season. Once the house renovations are finished, the house is sold and I've moved into a condo with nothing better to do, I can ride every weekend. Bonus that our company was acquired a few weeks ago, and year end for accounting is now September and not January ... so I don't have to spend the best months of winter chained to a desk fending off auditors "happy dance".
