  1. Okay...  Just called the Stoney Nakoda Lodge to reserve and it turns out they offer a great ski and stay package:  $160 per night includes two lift tickets each night!  Catch is, the tickets are for Thursday and Friday only.  So...  if anyone wants to join me Thusday I've got a free lift ticket for them.

  2. Will anyone be riding Nakiska on Thursday?  I'm gettin' pretty sick of the constant powder here in Revelstoke; I have two new Coilers I really want to try but the corduroy is buried deep here.

    (#firstworldproblems)

Yup, I'll take good cord over decent powder any day.  Nobody around here understands that, but maybe some Bomber folks do.  (Having said that, I will be in line early tomorrow for a another round on my favorite pow lines before driving east...)

    So?  Shred Thursday?  Anyone?

Also, is Norquay any good for carving?  There were rumours of fast, steep groomers there.  Is it true?   Are they wide and smooth or narrow and rolling? I haven't ridden there or Nakiska yet.  Recommendations?

  3. Greetings "locals"...  I've got something happening this weekend (plus, a real disdain for crowds) but I'm gonna ride Nakiska on Friday, probably staying Thusday night at Stoney Nakota Lodge.  Anyone else gonna be at the lodge or some other close by?  Where can I find you rippers on Friday morning?  Silver chair maybe?  Could someone send me a local phone number I could text if I can't find the crew?  I'll be the guy in the red jacket with the bad attitude destroying the corduroy early...

  4. Pair of new Coiler T4 NFCEs...  180 extra stiff 14/15scr for fast turns on great cord (The Stiffy) and the other a hair shorter, narrower, more sidecut and softer for ice (The Softy).  I would say "quiver of two", except now you folks have seen my quiver...  No corduroy in the forecast, only powder for the next week.  But soon...

  5. Hey Alexey,

So you're still sending boards?  Can I get one please?

I would love to try a 180FC in titanal construction with stiffness appropriate for a 82kg aggressive rider.  Your website says long, drawn out turns.  That's how I like it for sure.

I plan to attend some of the informal carving gatherings this season, and I can pass it off at Whitefish, Montana if it gets here fast enough.

Thanks,  and may I say, great idea this boardsharing thing.

  6. Six and zero degree cants.  The bindings are in good condition, with only one set screw missing on a toe bail, and some wear in one of the e-rings (both shown in photos).  The springs in the heel bails are intact.  These things will hold your b oots in real good for snowboard carving.  $200USD plus shipping from Revelstoke BC, Canada.

  7. Can't say Emdee.  Haven't seen the new Insanos, but loved my old ones.  Only tried the Malamutes in store.  It might be tough to find a boot that carves great and is also soft enough for the park.  There's gonna have to be a trade off unless you have multiple setups.  Maybe removable stiffeners is the answer?

Seems to me that board width is more important than boot stiffness if you want to carve hard in softies, especially if you're riding a park stance and your boots overhang.

Have a closer look at Ryan Knapton's setup:  stiff boot (Driver X), four or five buckles on the bindings with duct taped tall highbacks almost to the knee, 15 and -15 degree angles, and a 30cm wide waist.  He does it all with one setup.   Wide, mid-stiff board, and a very stiff custom interface.

As for boots, last year I researched the stiffest boots available and then went and tried them all on in store for fit, feel, and overall impression.

  8. Ya, I have a pair of Insanos too.  It's a good stiff boot, but more tailored to all around aggressive riding in the back/slack country, in my opinion.  It's a very lightweight, which is great for jumps and walking/ skinning, but the stiffness doesn't last for long on account of the lighter construction.  The Burton Drivers are heavier with more beefy construction, and as such I feel they're a better carving boot for groomers.  Salomon Malamute is the stiffest boot I've tried, better for narrower feet than mine though.

    I stand corrected.

The Ride El Hefe is a fine binding and the multiple footbeds are a bonus. Irrational personal preference led me to keep the Drakes and ditch the El Hefes.

Irrational personal preference eh?  Nothing to do with your job at Apex Skategoat?  That's okay, I ordered a set of the Drakes anyway.  I'll take my chances; anything for a great carve...

Your connection came up as I was searching BOL for some clue as to why the Apex site has removed Jasey-Jay's name and replaced it with "unnamed Canadian racer", while Jasey-Jay's website no longer offers plates.  I'm guessing there was some dispute as to the owner of the designs Apex and said unnamed racer worked on together?  Is there a lawsuit going on there?  Would you be able to fill us all in on some of the details please?  BOL loves gossip...

Did I just hijack my own thread?

  10. Hey Idahoes,

Are we doing this again this year?  The WTF dates are set (Jan 24th to Feb 3rd); can we do it right before or right after?  That would make for a killer road trip.

Also, any of you who want to check out Revelstoke are hereby invited to stay with us, two minutes from the gondola.  We have three extra beds in the house and not less than two dozen mattresses in The Crackhouse (some of which are actually clean and comfortable).  I want to see some deep trenches here that aren't mine...

  11. Thanks Bomber!

That was a very thorough and well researched answer Skategoat, you are indeed a hardboot wizard!  (Apparently, a softboot wizard as well.)  Great info.

xy9ine: I also have a set of El Heffes which are my favorite soft boot binding to date.  When my Driver X boots were new last year, the carving ability of that setup blew me away and helped convince me to buy a dedicated soft boot carver.  By the time I got the Donek though, the boots were broken in and I couldn't get that same response anymore.  That's why I'm shopping for a stiffer binding.  It is a great all mountain setup though; the El Heffes are going back on my Ripsaw for this season.

BTW, the snow is deep already at 2000m in Revelstoke, and the freezing level is getting lower every day.  I hope to see some real hardbooters out here this season (ya know, not just those Phantom splitboarders who think they're hardbooters).

  12. Thinking of buying the Drake Podium FF soft boot bindings to pair with my Burton Driver X boots and my wide Donek Sabre SRT.  Can anyone vouch for the durability and/or the feel of these bindings?  A cursory search of the internet turns up a few bad reviews (broken highbacks mostly), a search of BOL turns up next to nothing.  I'm looking for a very stiff and responsive binding for hard carving in soft boots.  Any recommendations?  What are the world class BX racers using?  And when are they going to bring back the third strap (with a higher heel cup that doesn't drag, as ridden in my corduroy dreams)?

    Winter is coming!

  13. Last minute decision to head to Aspen.  Driving from Schweitzer, starting tonight (last day of the N.I.C.E).  It's a long drive and I would love to carpool with someone.  I can meet you almost anywhere that's enroute.

Also, does anyone have an extra bed/ couch/ Harry Potter closet I can crash in?

  14. Gentlemen,  looks like you're all having a blast...  My passport arrived today and, coincidentally, the resort here just developed the dreaded death cookies (ice balls) on the groomers, and no snow 'till the weekend.  So it looks like I'll be driving south tomorrow for some trenching.  Where can I find you guys?  Is there any available housing or cheap lift tickets?  I should be there by dinner time Feb 1st.  Anyone driving to Aspen after?

  15. Gentlemen...  This is a bump for Revelstoke Mountain Resort.  Four seasons carving here and I have yet to see another real hardbooter on the mountain, except for a few who occasionally ride my loaner boards and some rare phantom splitboarders.  There is a ton of groomed mellow blue runs on the lower mountain.  I mean a ton...  The groomers do a great job and there's always so much corduroy going to waste every day.  I just can't continue to thrash it all by myself: my legs can't sustain this level of abuse and no one else heredad3.png knows how to carve a deep trench.  So come down here and check it out.  Help me destroy the corduroy!

The low mountain is not open yet as we still need more snow down here, but the upper mountain has a near record base for this time of year.   The terrain up there is quite rolling, with some very steep sections and many quick changes in terrain, but as the snow fills it in over the winter the rolling hilliness gives way to more consistent, excellent carving terrain.  They groom some very steep pitches up high, and some perfect practice runs down low.  5500 vertical feet, all of it carvable in season, no mandatory traversing, and very extensive grooming.

Don't be intimidated.  Carve Revy.  And hit me up if you're gonna be here.  It would be my pleasure to show you the goods, maybe even loan you a Coiler and help you find some cheap accommodation.
