bigwavedave
Rode at Wild yesterday, 9:30-2:30. My first time on the snow this year. All runs were open with good coverage and very few people on the hill (about 20 cars in the lot), some hard/crunchy spots on a couple of runs (Ego Alley and competition), otherwise excellent carving conditions. Wish I took some pics of the nice trenches left on Expressway next to the chair. Brought 3 boards (small, med and large) and rode them all. Had a bunch of compliments on my carving from the ski and snowboard instructors, and lifties. Rode up with a couple of skiers who said "you look just like you're surfing", and I said "exactly". The guy in charge of snowboard instructing asked if I wanted to teach again, I said no, but maybe someone reading this might be. He also said they would be interested in having USASA races at Wild. bigwavedave
11/20/14 Rode for about 4 hours today at Wild Mt. They're about 90% open. Expressway and Sunshine had the best snow, warm sun helped soften them up a bit as some of the other newly opened runs still had some hard, crunchy areas not so friendly to carving. bigwavedave
Wild Mt 2015-16 Believe it or not, Wild is saying they will have one run open tomorrow, and expect to open a run a day over the next several days. They always take pride in being the first to open in the state and last year they claimed fist "white-ribbon-of-death" in the nation. Usually they are 100% open by Thanksgiving. I'd be surprised this year. When I taught there, we had to show up on those first days, but I would not do it for fun, there's not enough room to carve. bobble
first and last time i went on opening day at Wild was on October 25, 2002. the one open run was crap. very narrow and crap poking through. i was in softboots. it was soooooooOOOOOOOooooo not worth it. opening days at buck aren't so great either. for whatever the reason the teens literally sit or stand in groups in the middle of the only run that's open. DonPablo
for whatever the reason the teens literally sit or stand in groups in the middle of the only run that's open. When I had a season pass at Andes Tower I use to see how close I could get to these kids... Might not have been the best judgment on my part. I never hit anyone so that's good. bigwavedave
Thinking about heading over to Wild for ½price Tuesday. With the online coupon a lift ticket is $24.50. They claim to be 100% open. Forecast calls for sun and I'm hoping for runs free of holiday crowds.
bigwavedave
Before... Ego Ally And after... on Expressway Today at Wild, rode from 10-2:30. Good snow and coverage (best I've seen this year) , some crunchy spots, no ice. Lots of sun and few people, until about 2:15, when after-schoolers started arriving by the busload and setting up for races. A good day for carving! bigwavedave
Out for ½ price Tuesday again today. Very few people around due to subzero temps and again some of the best snow. Only one chair operating for the first 2 hours as there was only about 4 people there. Lots of snow making. I got to have first tracks several times as more chair lifts fired up. Everything from hardpack to soft fluff. Ego Ally, typical Minnesota firm Expressway, Aspen-like plush Sunshine, fluffy baby pow Edited January 14, 2016 by bigwavedave
bigwavedave
Oh, almost forgot, the headless rider on the appropriately named Ego Ally. Edited January 13, 2016 by bigwavedave
bigwavedave
March 2017 Went up to Wild Mt today to ride the baby Coiler. There was a rough, icy base under the "surface groom" which was better on some runs, than others. Required a deft touch on the edges and good form. Wild was the best, with about 3-4" of packed sugary stuff over the hard stuff. The new ride was sweet and smooth $20 lift tickets and a blue bird day
bigwavedave
Heading up to Wild tomorrow, ½ price Tuesday. 4" fresh reported since yesterday, 2nd day groom, should be super! Will be kinda cold. Might keep the slopes less busy. Edited January 15, 2018 by bigwavedave
bigwavedave
Best snow I've carved this season! Think 2nd day groom in Aspen, like buttah! For the first 2 hours there was one other skier riding the chair. Made first tracks on several of the runs─Sunshine, Wild, Expressway and Bear! EgoAlly, a favorite, was closed for snow making─yea, they're still refreshing the slopes. Rather than complaints, there were compliments for all my trenches from patrollers and lifties─As I was leaving I overheard one snow ops guy saying to a coworker, "Did you see that guy on the alpine board making those beautiful carves? I almost hesitated to go over his tracks with the snowmobile." ...and much, much more. I was quite the sensationBlah, blah, blah.... And it was a nice cold and sunny day. bigwavedave
Rode all 3 boards, good carving to be found on most runs, especially on Bear (8 turn hill), Expressway (~10 turns top-bottom) and Competition( 6-7 steep turns) and Challenger (6 steeper turns). Gotta make every turn count on these little hills! Hard at work, 10-4 today. ½ price Tuesday. I'm sure I got it down to well under $1 per run, but who's counting, I was too absorbed in my work. bigwavedave
Surprise! Wild mountain was open today. Had a little left in the tank from yesterday, so I went out this morning. Firm enough to use the carving stick.
bigwavedave
Wild 2018-19 Thinking of riding at Wild tomorrow (Thursday) on my way up north.
bigwavedave
Pretty good snow at Wild. A firm groom resulting in 1-2 inch "trenches" in a good carve. Some hard stuff underneath. Started out with flat light and then glorious sun. Funny how a little brightness and definition improves one's riding. Spent some time fine tuning my stance on the new boards (I was making larger trenches on my toeside). Some of my hard work today...
bigwavedave
Well, it was a beautiful, calm and sunny day when I left Duluth heading south. Since Spirit Mt decided not to operate today due to winter-like weather I stopped at Wild Mt and found some really nice groom to carve up. Rode on the north side until the Expressway chair started spinning at 1pm. Got about 15 runs on Expressway and Competition before anyone else touched it and it had the best groom anywhere! 2
bigwavedave
2024 It's been awhile since I've been to Wild. I've got a couple of free passes to use, so I 'm planning to head down there tomorrow and get into some of the new snow from this storm. I heard they put in a new chair lift. bigwavedave
Thurs ~4" of new snow, mostly groomed in. It looked great until I got on it and found that it was crusty and bumpy under the surface with soft pockets, some frozen groom, curbs and holes in the grooming. Really hard to link more than a couple of clean carved turns. Then the bus loads arrived. Very disappointed and surprised at the conditions. Then I rode up the chair with a long time local pass holder and got the scoop. Turns out it's under new ownership and the snowmaking and grooming hasn't been up to snuff since. However, the newly renovated lodge is very nice, food was good and it had a full bar to drown my sorrows and an outdoor deck. The new chair is a painfully slow fixed grip and somehow the runs felt even shorter. The end of an era...
