Oxygn Proton GS 164

What year is it? I've seen the Oxygen GS listed as a decent board for more all around conditions (on this sight) even though it is a GS board and not all mountain. What do you think? I will almost never ride the board on more perfect groomed, slopes - I just don't live close enough to pick my days on the slopes. Will it handle various conditions? Do you think it would also handle a trip or two into back country powder (not as a primary powder board by any means)? I'm 5"10" and about 180 lbs. The length is certainly in the ball park - what about the side cut and such? I know it is a GS board, but can you crank out some tighter turns without too much trouble? Most of the ski areas I ride have fairly narrow slopes.

And finally, do you have any bindings for sale? They do not have to be the best - just decent and in good shape.

Thanks - My number is 307 251 1166.

This length of Oxygen Proton will be able to turn tight radius turns with someone of your weight and height, provided that your technique is solid.

I have had three Oxygen Protons in my quiver (a 164, a 168, and a 170). and while they tend to be a little stiff straight out of the box, they break in nicely and have a sweet flex. i weigh 150 lbs and am only 5' 8" , but can carve aggressively enough to rail these boards.

As for whether they work well in powder, well, any board can perform in powder if you just go fast enough... Seriously, I have used my Protons in powder, but the shallow and stiff nose means that you have to drive way in the back seat and go plenty fast to get Proton to plane up in the pow.

Stephen,

I don't want to lose a sale, but this board might be a bit small for your size, especially if you are an experienced rider. If you're new to alpine riding and hitting less than favorable conditions on a regular basis, a smaller board may be best....and would handle well for someone of your height & weight.

My personal experience with this board is that it handled well in all conditions. I used the board for racing and free riding. I'm only 5'4" and I'm not posting my weight for the world to see (!!!), but I'm way lighter than you! The board is stiff, so you need to be on it if you're hitting narrow trails, but you don't have to worry if you hit ice. I'm an east coast rider and the board does well on ice....given it's not a metal board.

Regarding bindings, I don't have bindings to go with the board, but just search this site and you'll find someone selling bindings.

I hope this info is helpful. Everyone has an opinion about boards, but I don't think there are any right or wrong rules about what to ride. It just comes down to how you ride and what you like to ride.:)

Hey Arden, I have an older Proton (this one: http://www.alpinecarving.com/images/oxygen_proton.jpg I think it's a 2001 or so), and it has metal construction. The topsheet claims titanium (probably marketing BS?), not titanal, but there is definitely a metal layer in there that's visible at the cutout in the tail.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that the board you're selling is newer than mine - are you sure there's no metal in there?

Dan,

Thanks for the note. I have to say that I'm pretty sure it's not a metal board. It doesn't ride like a metal board and I don't see any metal. The board is definitely newer (2007/2008) than the one you have, but they did make a few variations.

That said, it's still a great board!

Marc,

The board is still available. I live in Sterling, near WaWa. I could meet you 1/2 way or so. I'll be at Sunapee on Sat and either Stratton or Mt. Snow on Sunday.
