John Gilmour 2011 Ski Snowboard deals

A free lift ticket for lovers

When it comes to finding ways to ski or snowboard free, the most unusual has to be the one coming up on Valentine's Day at Loveland. And this year it falls conveniently on a Saturday.

Yes, I'm talking about the 18th Annual Marry Me & Ski For Free Mountaintop Matrimony event.

To some, getting married might seem a drastic price to pay for a free lift ticket. But enough people are enticed by the offer every year to make it one of Loveland's most popular events.

If you're already hitched, no problem. Loveland's offer extends to couples renewing their vows as well.

There is a catch, however: Only one of you actually gets to ski "free." The deal is a two-for-one lift ticket. One of the happy couple will have to shell out the $56 for the lift tickets, and no, it won't be cute if your first argument is about who pays.

The Mountaintop Wedding will be at noon outside the Ptarmagin Roost Cabin, at 12,000 feet elevation at the top of Chair 2 at Loveland Basin. Couples and their guests must be prepared to ski or snowboard down the hill; no downhill lift riding.

Wedding attire is encouraged, and there will be a prize for the best-dressed couple. But make sure the attire is also warm; this is an all-weather event.

One more thing: Couples getting married are required to obtain a valid Colorado marriage license and bring it to the ceremony to be signed.

To pre-register and get complete information, visit Loveland Ski Area's Web page.

There are easier two-for-one lift ticket deals out there. A fillup of at least 10 gallons of gas at participating Phillips 66 stations will get you a two-for-one voucher for Monarch, Powderhorn, Winter Park or Copper Mountain.

Ah, but where's the romance in that?

The offer ends February 28 and with the amount of snow in the Sierras this year, their timing may be right. All you have to do is go to your local Ford dealer and tell them you want to go on a test drive because you saw the “Mammoth lift ticket commercial offer”. After the drive they will get your name and by the time you get home, you will have a free lift ticket. I am rating this a yellow bee because you have to go on a test drive and give them an email, otherwise it’s totally free.
