Loc
I sold my Canon HF100 camcorder to help pay for my new 5Dm2. I'll have to shoot a few weddings and bridezillas to get back in the red. This hobby's a money pit! Anyways, the point of this post was to show how far technology has come. http://vimeo.com/5467256 - not a riding video at all, but it's my first real one recorded with the slr. Thought I'd help my musician friend out. http://vimeo.com/3155182 - skiing/riding video shot by someone else http://vimeo.com/5062435 - truly an incredible wedding video that was edited the same day (sde). It melts my steely heart Manual focusing is not fun!
pokkis
Yep, main problem shooting carving with DSLRs is focusing to fast moving objects due short depth of focus, you will get very easily out of focus blurry stuff. Shooting racers should be slightly easier due they will make turns next to poles anyway and path is predictable, not like on free carvers. Me personally have not found yet any good reason to switch from basic HD-camcorder to DSLR.
Loc
I haven't handled the Panasonic GH1 but from this article it appears to be a great camera to take on the mountains for recording video and taking great pics: http://ddisoftware.com/tech/articles/july-2009-dslr-video-revisited/ "The GH1, on the other hand, feels more like a camera that was built from the ground up with video in mind. Offering super fast and continuous autofocus and an articulating LCD that can be used when holding the camera at odd angles, the GH1 is currently the closest match for replacing your camcorder." Jack M
Me personally have not found yet any good reason to switch from basic HD-camcorder to DSLR. Seen the RED Scarlet? http://www.red.com/epic_scarlet/ It's on my "when I'm independently wealthy" list. If RED ever figures out how to make this thing for $2500, Canon and Nikon will suddenly be fighting for their lives.
pokkis
Yep, i've been drooling for Scarlet some time, but i know that weight and focusing are major drawbacks with it. But frames/sec with "normal" HD size is one killer factor
pokkis
But that Panasonic GH1 mentioned there above can be great compromise relate dquality and money. Thatis something i think might be best short term option now  But that is not more or less full blown DSLR .
Jack M
I agree that GH1 is a cool package. Basically all you give up is a TTL viewfinder and phase-detect auto-focus. Not insignificant things, but you end up with a very compact DSLR with no mirror slap, good live view, and a neat selection of lenses. The 12-60 f/2.8 - f/4 (24-120mm effective) gets good reviews and is very versatile. I've also read that the contrast-detect auto-focus works quite well, on par with entry-level DSLRs. And with HD video it could be the only camera you'd ever need!
