Waukesha - A New Berlin woman who put plastic wrap across her husband's face and hit him with a dumbbell because she wanted him to shut up was sentenced today to four months in Waukesha County's work-release jail and put on probation for five years.

Valentina Grenader cracked on Oct. 24 under the strain of living for years with an abusive, controlling husband and reacted violently, her attorney, Anthony Rosario, told Waukesha County Circuit Judge Lee S. Dreyfus Jr. during her sentencing hearing.

But with the exception of that "terrible five minutes in her life that day," Grenader is a "very, very good person" who did not realize she could reach out to others for help, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com><st1:City w:st=Rosario said.

Nonetheless, Dreyfus told Grenader that her actions were "carried beyond what is appropriate" to end the relationship with her husband, Mark, and "ultimately what you did put him in real danger."

Grenader, 46, had been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, strangulation and suffocation, and substantial battery in the case.

But as part of a plea agreement, the attempted homicide charge was dismissed in exchange for Grenader pleading guilty to the substantial battery and strangulation and suffocation charges.

According to court records, the couple showed up at the New Berlin Police Department on the night of Oct. 24 with Mark Grenader telling an officer he wanted to press charges against his wife. He said she initiated sexual contact, tying him to bed posts and blindfolding him. Then she put the plastic wrap over his mouth and nose, making it difficult for him to breathe. He began thrashing and tried to yell for help, the criminal complaint says.

She told him she was going to kill him and then herself, the complaint says. As he pleaded for his life, she hit him three or four times with a dumbbell in the head, the complaint says.

Grenader told detectives that she wasn't trying to kill her husband. She said she had a gambling problem and told him while he was tied up that she had lost $800 at a casino. He was yelling so loud that she wanted to quiet him so they could talk about her problem, the complaint says.

Dreyfus imposed a four-year prison term and five years of extended supervision on Grenader, but stayed the sentence. If Grenader violates the terms of her probation, including a prohibition against gambling, she could be sent to prison.

Rosario told Dreyfus that Grenader, who has been held in jail since charges were filed, plans to seek a divorce from her husband.

I gotta say it sounds kinda normal, from my experiences as a kid. I still remember a pic of one of my dad's friends who had his ear bitten off in a barroom fight. Stories of all sorts of things...guess the cold Wisconsin winters do that to you...carverchick, you ARE a city girl, right??
