  1. Should I compensate for regular vs goofy?

I figure I'm not a good enough rider to bother setting the plate up for my regular stance, so sorry, I'm no help there.

How can the plate vary the boards flex? I understand this may be a complex question. I have my stance dialed for my other boards, I will vary my stance for different boards and occasionally for conditions. Now the plate isolates me from these changes, how do I let it work for me?

The JJA plate is more flexible and less rigid than any of the other plates that I have seen/ridden - this makes it very easy to pedal the plate and have good sensation for the snow under the board.

By attaching the plate to the board in the widest UPM holes (so that mounts are closest to nose and tail of board), you decrease the length of the nose and tail, resulting in a stiffer feeling board. Conversely, if you mount the plate in the UPM holes closest to the middle of the board, you increase the length of the nose and tail, resulting in a softer feeling board. For the hardcore racers, they can dial-in the mounting position of the plate based on the conditions of the day. I've played with the combo in the "soft" and "stiff" locations and noticed a significant difference in feel. You are going to have to play around and find the best configuration for your weight, riding style, snow conditions, mountain, etc... Don't be afraid to tinker!

  2. We were a bunch of sissies yesterday. We where in the Rock House after our 2nd run trying to clear ice off of goggles, restore circulation to extremities... we ended up in the Rat by 10:30. not a very pleasurable day, but a day nevertheless. Nice having a season pass

I checked the weather conditions at 2AM, then proceeded to turn off Shelly's alarm.

We are planning to head up on Thursday for some mid-week fun...

  3. Shelly and I showed up late. Kept an eye open but did not see anyone else.

The wind was too bad to go any where else.

Roulette was super grippy, but the wind on the lift ride up and the wind-induced vertigo from the lift to the pitch was brutal. Richards was nice as-well. Made three runs with only Shelly and I on the pitch.

Air temp. in the parking lot was ~20ºF, with the windchill factored in, temp was definitely in the -10ºF range.

  4. Since a bunch of youse couldn't sack up and come out and play last weekend, I am wondering how many of you nancyboys are going to make it out sunday? since its going to be at least 30 degrees warmer, I will be waiting @ 1 with my beach chair @ 8:30 on sunday

Hope to make it up this weekend. Bailed on last weekend because Bruin had emergency surgery on Saturday AM. It's amazing how quickly the old man is springing back!

  5. The 181cm interested me due to the length mostly. I only have one non alpine board and it's a 200cm.

I would like a split board, just because... and the 165cm would be a nice gift for my son.

I guess I was looking for confirmation that they are a reputable company that builds quality stuff.....If they have some secret sauce (like Coiler/Donek/Virus) in their boards that would be a bonus.

Is $750 a good deal for the 3? or could I get one at half off list price pretty much anywhere in CO anytime?

Venture Snowboards are fairly well-known in Colorado, but typically only stocked at specialty shops. I anticipate there is not at much margin on a Colorado-made, specialty board as there is in a Brand-X, Chinese-made POS, so big box stores don't carry the product.

I would not hesitate to recommend one. I would jump on the set at $250 per board. The best prices I have typically seen have been on eBay, and are in the $300 to $350 range.

My 180 Storm R split rides like a 155cm board - it is extremely maneuverable, yet has plenty of effective edge when you tip the board.

  6. Two years ago, Tony was constantly reaching for the snow on toe-side turns. Standing at the top of chair #6, Mario and I decided to give him some "assistance"... Mario yanked off his right glove (the hand he was reaching with), tossed it to me, and I took off down the hill. Needless to say, Tony made a considerable effort not to reach for the snow on that run and thereafter. :D

  7. John - reaching is a bad habit that is hard to break. It's great that you don't do it instinctively; I'd definitely not recommend doing it on purpose. It's one thing to tap the snow to catch your balance, it's another thing to actually reach, it's another to be angulated to the point that you are incredibly low and the snow it right there and you don't have to reach to touch.

  8. A quick shout-out for this board...:biggthump

This Selecta is from the first model year of production. Years 1 and 2 were made in Germany, while all subsequent years were made in China. The quality of year 1 and 2 Selecta's is superior to that of the Chinese-made boards.

While the nose rise is low, offering phenomenal crud-busting ability, the powder channel and significant taper keep the nose riding high. Being the original design, this board has camber.

I've never ridden my Selecta in hardboots, but I believe this board has beefy construction and would be a good hardboot powder board.

  9. Pretty much nothing to do in Elkhorn. I you have a car, drive the 10 or 12 miles southeast to Lake Geneva and walk around.

Another option is drive the 10 miles northeast and checkout the [sarcasm] mega-resort [/sarcasm] known as Alpine Valley. It's literally a bump in the middle of nowhere. They do have an outdoor amphitheater, so you could see if anyone is playing. This were the location where, sadly, Stevie Ray Vaughn died in a helicopter crash.

  10. 3 weeks, no posts  You guys are slippin' :D must be busy :biggthump

    I'm sure you're killing it whatever you're into :)

Busy enjoying Colorado one singletrack trail at a time... :)

  11. Look into riding at Monarch and staying in Salida.

It's closer to you than Loveland and Eldora.

Less busy than Loveland and less touristy than Wolf Creek.

You could also split the trip and spend a couple days at Loveland and a couple at Monarch - a Loveland season pass (typically ~$350) gets you three free days at Monarch. It all depends on how many days you want to spend riding...

  12. In other news, we the RunesOhana, have been evacuated for the night as the Blue Bell fire is just on the other side of the Mtn from us. All Virus boards have been evac'd as well along with 4 bikes. We're all good and staying in Centennial for now.

Just left you a voicemail - give me a holler if you need anything! You guys are more than welcome to come down for dinner tonight if you want a break from hanging with the parents.
