  1. Hi All My 14 year old son rides and races a Coiler, here in eastern Canada. So he's used to groomed slopes, hardpack and ice. We're heading west (to Banff) for a New Years week family vacation and would like to ride some of the back bowls, which ofcourse will be ungroomed powder. While he can tear up a race run, he's concerned about his ability to ride the back bowls. I've suggested that he could rent a freeride board, but he would prefer not to, as he has not a riden freeride board (in soft boots) since he was 9. Alternatively, I suppose we could borrow a Prior, for the week. FYI, he rides a custom WC Coiler that has been designed for racing. A 173 cm with an 18.5 cm waist, 6.3 stiffness. He can flex the board quite well. He's about 5 fooot 7 inches and 125 to 130 lbs. Can he readily adapt to riding the Coiler in deep powder? If so, what techniques should he employ? Any video we can watch? Or would another carver be more suitable, in which case we will cast about to locate one? Or rent a freeride board? We welcome your advise. Thanks Julian
  2. Hi All Thanks for the numerous suggestions. We'll definitely look south of the border. We would have loved to have headed to the Expression Session, but we'll be travelling a week later. Armed with your suggestions, we're headed to our local Ski and Snowboard Show, to find the best combination of great riding and $ value. Cheers Julian
  3. Hi All: Headed out west from Toronto, mid-February. My 14 year old son races alpine snowboard, my wife, 19 year old daughter and I ski. Trying to fit a week trip in between his races, during her university reading week. Looking for a big mountain experience (3,000 to preferably 5,000+ vertical), within afew hours drive of a major airport in a) western Canada or, b) north western US c) ???? We are all relatively "expert" riders (son and daughter race, wife and daughter are ski instructors; I try to keep up to all), so we tend to ride the blacks and some doubles, along with cruising runs on the blues. Much as we all started as novices, we prefer to avoid resorts that overly cater to novices/young families or are unduly crowded. We like to pick a line and ride it. We welcome your suggestions and reasons. Appreciately Julian Colman

Hi Ray My son races alpine here in Canada. He has outgrown his Suzukas, which have a 25.5 shell and a 25.0 thermofit liner. We need the next shell size up, which I believe should be marked 26.5. What size is your shell (ie the very bottom/foot section of the shell)? Please check the print on the inside of the shell. He will also need a 26.0 thermofit liner. FYI, his foot measures 26.0 cm and is growing. Please also more fully describe the model year (age) and condition of each component of the boot (sole, lower mid and upper shell, buckles, liner, etc.). Any significant damage or wear; cracks, dents, tears, etc? How soft is the shell now. My son is an aggressive racer. Please tell me abit about the rear spring. My sons current boot has a lever system. How did you find the spring vs lever. Thanks Ray Cheers Julian
  5. Hi: Can you email me some further specs and pics: - stiffness rating - radius - sidecut - model - add-ons and price This is for my son, who races here in Ontario (Oshawa LowRiders). He's 5 foot 7 and growing; weighs about 125 and gaining. Rides aggressively. What's your weight, height and style? Thanks Julian
  6. Hi All: I'd like to get in touch with Ross Rebegliati about a race camp at Whistler. Does anyone have Ross's contact information? I emailed him (to the email address on his website) but have not heard back; possible a dated or incorrect email address. Thanks Julian Colman
  7. Hi All: One other camp option. I heard that Ross Rebegliati was planning a camp up in Whister, which would therefore be in our home country. I have emailed Ross (at the address provided on his website) but have not had a reply. The email address could ofcourse have changed. Does anyone have direct contact information for Ross? Cheers Julian Colman
  8. Hi Phil: Thanks for the reply. I need to sort out what camp would work best, for a now 14 year old teenage racer. I also need to work out logistics, as my son would be travelling alone from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. So, can you tell me abit more about the camps that you are managing, particularly how the camp would accommodate a 14 year old. I have a number of questions / topics to discuss. You can reach me off line at the following tels. Office 416-359-2402 Home 416-495-9965, or via email at jhcolman@rogers.com . If you leave a message at home, just leave your name. I have not yet mentioned this to my son, as I have not yet determined whether we could work the logistics and timing out. I'd also like to obtain contact information for Pete and Lisa, to obtain further information about their camp. Abit of background about my son. He currently races with the Ontario Association of Snowboarders. He competed in the 11 to 13 age category. He had a blast this season and picked up a number of medals along the way. He raced 4 Provincial (akin to US Regional) races, and placed 1st, 3rd, 1st and 6th (he fell). He then placed 1st at the Provincial Championships. Also 1st in all of the 3 lower level recreational races he ran. He will turn FIS age the season after next (i.e. 2007/2008). So he had a great season, capped by a Championships 1st and (the following weekend) watching and meeting his heros at the Lake Placid (Whiteface) race. He's now stoked! However, next year will be more competitve, as he will be moving up an age class and also attending a tryout camp for our Provincial Team. So he could use abit of help this summer, to make life alittle easier and more fun for the upcoming winter. Please call me or leave a contact number where you can be reached. Most appreciated. Cheers Julian Colman
  9. Thanks for the lead. Any suggestions as to where I can look for more info? Most appreciated. Julian
  10. Hi All My son is 14 year old and races GS and PGS here in Ontario, Canada. I'd welcome your suggestions for a summer race camp. We're looking for top level coaching, in a fun and safe environment for his age group. Appeciated. Cheers Julian Colman

  12. Hi All The State Farm World Cup PGS race at Whiteface Lake Placid finally aired on NBC. But we missed it, as we were out riding at Holimont. Did anyone tape it. My son and I saw the race in person; he met his heros and is now stoked. We'd love to get a copy of the NBC broadcast or any other video of that race. Thanks Julian

  14. Hi All: My son and I just came back from the World Cup Alpine PGS races at Whiteface. We noticed that some of the racers were riding what I would call riser plates. Essentially, strips of say 1 inch high metal, that raise the binding higher off the board, presumably proving more leverage to place the board on edge and more rigidily/less flex directly under the feet. The ski racing world calls these "riser plates". What are the pros and cons of these, for adult racers and also for teenage racers (14 years old, 5 foot 6, 125 lbs, an aggressive rider for his age)? What are the design alternatives and where can we procure them? My son currently rides a custom Coiler. Should be an interesting discussion, if you are interested. Best Julian

  16. Hi PHil: Kind of you to reply. My 14 year old alpine racing son was absolutely enthralled, to be able to watch, meet and chat with his heroes. Getting a tape of it all would be the icing on the cake. So I'll do whatever works best for you, in order facilitate our receipt of the video. And I'd be happy to cover whatever your costs are. I have a webspace on my Internet providers website. I just need to learn how to provide you with public access to it. You can then post the video there. Whatever works for you. So that we can communicate more readily, please email me at jhcolman@rogers.com . Most appreciated Cheers Julian Colman

  20. Hi All: My son races alpine GS and PGS here in Ontario Canada. He might also run the occassional slalom. For GS or PGS, would some form of padding or alternatively body armour be useful, to allow him to carve turns "lower" and/or closer to the gate? The protection might provide a psychological benefit, making the rider feel more comfortable carving lower/closer. Or protection. Or both. But would this encumber his movement? Necessary or useful? Or not? If useful, then what type or armour or padding, for what body parts? Such as a shinguard ?? If so, full or half? What length? Thanks all. Regards Julian

  24. Hi All: Posted a while ago on Bomber. Boots still for sale. SB225's size 23-23.5. For $50 you get the boots (3 years old), a one year new thermofit liner, the original liner + 3 tongues. I just want these to go to a new home, hopefully a new hardbooter. Good condition. And Bomber has lots of replacement parts, if you ever need them. But lots of interest and no takers. So I had to put it on ebay. It's there if you want it. Openning bid $35 or "buy it now" for $49. Just search for auctions by JHC2. In the mean time, my son's waiting desperately for snow, so he can ride his new Coiler and Suzuka boots. When you race, you get all the great gear. Us Dads just get hand me ups. Hope he grows! Regards Julian
  25. Hi All If you'd like pictures of the boots, thermoliners and 3 tongues, just email me at jhcolman@rogers.com . I ofcourse need your email address. Regards Julian
