  1. Was fun to see everyone today, I think that I am finally getting this stupid board dialed in. I had to cut out too early for work but it was fun to get a couple of turns in. Will be at Welch on Friday, Buck for practice on Sat. and riding with my kids on Sunday. Merry Christmas to all!

  2. Hey Rick,

So glad that stance adjustment worked out for you!

When I first met you a few weeks back, your riding looked pretty rigid and uncomfortable - most notably was the restricted range of movement in your lower half. (And just FYI - Nobody was laughing at you. We've all been there man!)

There was a big improvement in your riding after that first adjustment. Shortening up your stance width returned mobility to your knees which in turn dramatically increased your vertical range of movement. Your knees could now absorb bumps - like shocks on a car - if you encountered uneven terrain. You also discovered/recovered better edging control so your turns didn't have as many dramatic upper-body rotations and recoveries. Consequently this also lifted and adjusted your brow.. which for a couple days was furrowed with frustrations.

So-cool to see you stick with it, hear your excitement, and witness your stair-steps to victory. Will see you on the hill real soon! Think you'll be carving turns in no time! :biggthump (Keep looking up and ahead!)

Ha ha - Oh yes.. I also keep a tool with me at all times..

I've seen many freestyle riders with duck or 0° angles showing up on race day wondering why they keep falling whenever they try to carve.

For my freestyle board I keep my angles around 27° to avoid some of that dreaded boot-out issue. Yuck.

    Cheers,

    ~Karl

About carving with a duck stance I think it depends on the board and the rider. Both my freestyle boards are set up 18F, -15B and not to bad to carve on. The pure park board is very soft, is fairly stable at speed but does tend to wash out especially on heelside. The other one is an all mountain board, stiff and easy to carve with a duck stance.

    Morning

there's alot of snow coming down. the snow was not too deep but if you dragged your hand in it you'd get sprayed in the face. the snow was very light but it wasn't like skiing in powder. when i got there it was somewhat thin. after an hour the snow really accumulated and was turning into piles.

milkrun had races so that was out. ballroom was closed for training. the only two runs were crossroads and warners way.

i was surprised that the flat light didn't bother me. after a couple runs there were plenty of marks in the snow which make things easier to see. despite the snow and flat light i was able to carve most of the run albeit a little slow.

crossroads. there was a couple of spots where the cord underneath was bad. one was near the third lift tower the other was midway down. it was cruddy. put too much and it gave out. one time i blew out a toe-side edge and my jacket scooped up snow on the inside.

rick and i ventured over to warners way. nice and mellow.

then the ski jammers showed up on warners in new blue matching ski jackets. they were everywhere.

    talk about bad juju... CRAP!

    AMF!

    (look it up)

i decided to leave early. in one hour the conditions got more difficult for alpine gear. crossroads got crowded. it got to the point i had to wait for a window.

when i saw the ski jammers doing their "pinch loaf" turns (no ski poles!) across the entire width of crossroads. they would ski a couple turns then stop in the center of the runs to have a friendly chat. i had to go.

people were waiting impatiently on top for them to move out of the way. from the chair i saw this snowboarder coming down and was about to fly off one of those big mounds. unfortunately for the kid, a ski jammer crossed his path forcing him to abort. the kid gave the ski jammer the finger. i laughed.

when i got off the chair lift some child about two chairs behind me didn't exit the chair properly. i heard this loud crying and saw the chair lift stop. it looked like the child jumped off the chair near the kill switch. he was lying on the ground crying. people came over to help.

i took off down the run and headed out. i couldn't have timed it better. at the bottom i saw the chair lift wasn't going. even as i driving out of the the parking lot the chair was still not moving.

overall it was not too shabby. glad i went.

After you left I think it got even worse with the "jammers". Crossroads and Milkrun were just packed with them. It was funny watching them struggle through the "pinch loaf" turns with all the new snow. Kind of a stop/start line of dominoes going across the run. Can you say wax? I wish I could be on a carving board more, but it was alot of fun on the freestyle today. Rode up with Rick (rhaskins) on the chair once.....keep it up, it is a blast. Headed to Welch tomorrow, I have about a foot of snow in my driveway so it should be fun. I hope to get up to Buck for Christmas Eve, work should be slow enough.

    Temp Cold

    Visibility Flat

Hardbooters (2) Me and some kid

    Morning

On a new board so the day was spent trying to get it dialed in. I hate the process of trying to get a raceboard to feel good. Snow was decent, hard and fast and a bit icy in spots. No more boxes on Lookout so I had it to myself for the day. Was quite nice with not too many people out.

    Evening/Night

It got hard to hold an edge once the sun went down, trying to blame it on getting my board set. I think that the reality is that I don't get enough time on the race board any more. Feet got really cold, finally admitted that the liners in Fire's suck and I need something better. Bought a season pass on the way out and should be able to ride most afternoons.

    Fresh off the Farm

Early afternoon I watched three guys in Carharts and Blaze Orange walk out of the rental area. They didn't know how to put their skiis on so I then headed over to Dan's to avoid the carnage. Came back some time later and one of them was walking out with a board and knew it was time to go home. I didn't want to see him peeled off a tree. All in all it was a good day. Many questions about the board and how I could make it turn like that and a good run in with the SkiPee's. No complaints and I think I even saw our purple jacketed friend from Buck there. Might have been her sister............

  5. holy crap  I had no idea that the picture would continue to update off of the webcam after I copied and pasted it into this thread.

    what a country:D

That is cool, don't know how you did it but you da man! 10 inches of snow here last night. It was a true SE MN powder day. Pretty pathetic huh? :freak3:

  6. Was wondering who was planning on attending. Knee hurts, shoulder is toast, but am looking forward to utilizing my "chin stop". Had some friends at Welch this weekend who saw Trent and Bobble, any issues? See you on Sunday.

  7. Broken tailbone, clavicle, ankle ripped to shreds, all on hardboots. I must be getting old, have been at Buck Hill the last two seasons coaching freestyle with some carving. Knees hurt each weekend after practice. Think I am getting too old for jibbing. Couldn't put weight on my left knee last night at all. Funny thing is that I have no knee problems on the race board. Must be my duck stance. :freak3:

  8. Moreso because all the kooks are busy jibbing than the waves being significantly better. I don't surf anymore anyway..Guess to someone else, it's one less kook in the water

What about all the squid/jarhead kooks that are out during liberty renting foam boards thinking that because Keanu picked it up why can't they? Don't know that West Coast waves are better during the winter but have been on some waves from Solano to Cabo that were huge.

  9. coming form an sub artic climate during the winter, i cant get used to the warmth or my inability to ski or snowboard. I talk to my friends out in colorado and they love to rub it in how they can ski whenever they want. Im so tempted to get some new gear and pack my bags and head west. anyways, im rambling, i cant wait to hit up the wisconsin slopes :( because thats probably the best thing ill get this year.

What about the Betty's? Get a surfboard! I know it isn't snow but if you are within driving range of rideable waves get your ass on a surfboard. It can be fun. I don't know how east coast waves are in the winter but in SoCal the winter rides were usually the best.

  10. That sounds like a good time, Bubba.

Have you ever heard of Artis the Spoonman??

    from the seattle area

    truly a kitchen utinsel virtuoso.

Soundgarden wrote a song about him. I got to see him open for the Dead at Bumpershoot Festival in Seattle many years ago

Never heard of him but will do a search to see if I can find anything. That must be the story behind "Spoonman". The kitchen is where I started learning my licks (my father was a classical musician). It started at the high chair, then went to pencils on the table. After the table edges were destroyed my dad figured that it was time for sticks. The sticks eventually destroyed the pots, pans, and lids. It was time for a drum set! No more destruction except for the heads and my parents ears.

To the BigMtn gang thanks for all the info, this is a great community! Hope to meet /ride with some of you when we come out. I think that we are looking at Feb 5-16 for our trip. Hope to throw in a visit to Fernie and see some friends in Missoula while out there.

  11. I first met him when he played at blacktail in '99. saw him a few times before we moved to Sandpoint a few years ago.

He's kind of a north woods Jimmy Buffet.

He is a very cool, down-to-earth guy. I have played drums for 32 years and he let me sit in with him playing spoons at the Northern and Ed&Mullys on the mountain.

  12. LOL

probably mistook you for a californian:eplus2:

we are an interesting blend of supergreenie hippie wannabe's and hardcore log the planet manly men. neither of them like the corporate look.

Funny thing is that I am from CA transplanted to MN. Have eaten at golf clubs and the "corporate look" is the norm. I just figured it was a nice joint to eat so one must dress the part.........I was mistaken. I will leave the "corporate look" at home this year.

b0ardski - dunnigan is great and have seen him many, many times and boy does he like the Patron!

  13. There are at least 8 of us. johnasmo daveredman wescarven myself and skwalguy are the only ones on the bomberboard I think. then there's rick, mario, rob bernie, john mcginnis, and one or two others. We have had good turnout for BMES the last two years. The OHIO boys are a perrenial favorite at least for the local bar industry:eplus2: just bring a pow board since we have had an overabundance of pow and little hard groom the last two years.

I hope to see some of you this year when we are out and will put something in the ride board once dates are figured out. I was only on the race board for 1 day there last year, the rest was all on a pow board......I can ride cord all day in MN. Speaking of bars, we went to the Northern to see John Dunnigan after a nice dinner at the golf course. Apparently a few people didn't like the button down shirt look and I had a few invites to look at the after dark scenery outside. This year it will be a hoodie and a ballcap.

  14. I was out there eight days last Feb and saw him almost everyday. He was the only carver I ever saw there. Tried to hook up with him but it never worked out. Funny you should mention his binding angles because it looked different when I would see him ride.

  15. I didn't know if this should be in the ride board. We are trying to book our winter trips and one of them is an annual trip to BM. Webcams show no snow, BM site has no info. Last year was great with a ton of snow, it looks grim now. If Dr. D or anyone in the area could provide some info, it would be appreciated.

  16. JT,

Nice buck. I took my son out for his first season with a gun. We spotted a buck at about 300 yds and he raised his gun (youth 870 20 gauge) and said "What kind of drop should I expect at this range dad?" He had no shot with a slug so I got it once it came out of the swamp grass with my .30-06. After that, all we saw in his range were button fawns and small does. Sad that he didn't get his first deer, but I can't bring myself to let him shoot a small one just for the sake of shooting a first deer.

  17. Nice to see everyone today. Don't know what was up with my bindings, but even after I adjusted them I still didn't feel comfortable at speed with them. I ate lunch and was pissed so I went home, cooked a steak and had a beer or ten and life was better. I worked until 2 last night so maybe that had something to do with it also. It was the first time on that board so maybe I just need to spend a day tweeking it and getting used to the board. I just felt very uncomfortable on my heel. Boy the excuses are flying. Doing some tuning tonight and will be out about 11 tomorrow. My kids outgrew their softboots so I will be hitting The House first. Cheers!

crossroads, milkrun, ballroom were groomed. although milkrun was groomed it was irregular. some soft and hard spots. same with ballroom. crossroads was good.

Icehouse Beer -- Get it Goin!

kent saw this guy drinking icehouse beer on the chair. guy was skiing with his son. it was probably about 10:30 am. i can't think of any beer i'd drink early in the morning. if i had to then it be MGD cause that's what its all i got in the fridge. i hardly drink anymore. anyways the guy wasn't exactly the best skiier -- more like a moving wall.

around 11:30 am we see the guy still casually drinking his nutrituous breakfast on the chair. mud sidled up to the ski patrol and gave them a sitrep. i don't think the guy was much of threat to others except to himself and his son. icehouse has 5.5% and who knows when this guy started. the ski patrol waited on top of the chair lift. they made the guy pour the beer. i heard the guy was pissed... "i don't have a drinking problem... i have a skiing problem!!!" angry drunks always scare me. a run or two later scuff caught a whiff of the guy. nasty.

Good thing this guy hasn't discovered Golden Monkey or Zep Imperial Ale, both are about 12% ETOH. I was wondering if anyone was planning on being out this Friday? I hate shopping and will be dropping the GF off at MOA for the day. I was out last Saturday in softies and it was fun for my first day of the year. Too many people out, plus the rail jam on milk run didn't make me comfortable putting on hardboots. On a side note, if anyone picked up this years Sampler, could I have a copy?

  19. I was in the cities last night to see Jason Mraz and woke up at 7:00 to hit the Target by our hotel. They had 600 copies and we didn't even get past the registers when they sold out. I can remember being able to get one on Christmas Eve years ago. I am getting too damn old to be camping out overnight for a CD. You riding this weekend?
