  1. "Yes to ski helmets, but buyer beware"

"Heads-up federal government, it’s high time to establish a regulation so that skiers and snowboarders know that helmets purchased in Canada actually provide adequate protection."

    Letter in response . . .

Federal government must act on CSA standards for snow sport helmets

"I want to thank Canadian Medical Association Journal for publicizing the fact that most snow sport helmets available in Canada, fail to protect against brain injury and that action is required by the federal government.

On March 19, 2007, I tabled a Private Member's Bill C-412 that would prohibit the advertising, sale or import of recreational snow sport helmets which do not meet Canadian Safety Association (CSA) standards. CSA standards are superior to current domestic and imported helmets in preventing concussion. Unlike current helmets, they can also withstand multiple impacts.

Five years later, despite the advice, of Health Canada and an Expert Panel, to adopt the new CSA standards, federal Health Ministers refuse to do so.

My current Bill C-275 will add non-CSA approved recreational snow sport helmets, to the Hazardous Products Act. All it requires is the stroke of a pen by the Prime Minister. I would like to thank the Canadian Medical Association Journal for supporting the intent of my Bill."

  2. Parents believe that when they go out and buy a helmet for their kids, it meets some type of crash-test standard - the majority do not.

When selecting a helmet it's important to see if there is Certification from CSA, CE, Snell or ASTM.

  3. 40cm stance centered on the board.

Chris, standard suggestion is 4 cm (1.5") distance from back toe to front heel.

Having trouble visualizing your 40 cm (15.7") stance.

Is that centre of boot(s) or are your boots (back toe to front heel) actually 40 cm apart?

  4. There is on-going "carving community" discussion thread about binding set-up on narrow boards.

For those interested, here is the thread: http://www.bomberonline.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=366064#post366064

Timely as I've recently been experimenting to get the most favourable stance position on the skwal.

So far 90, 90 with front toe, back heel lift seems to work.

A friend dials in 85 (back foot), 90 (front foot).

    What works for you?

  5. Mike, I have been buying the Head fabric ski gloves sold at Costco for a number of years now. Yes, they always sell out fast and are good for just cool days. For the seriously cold days, may I suggest the mitts that MEC sells?

Hey Brian, yesterday while the cold front was blowing into Ottawa Valley I ended up night skiing at Pak with outer-mitt-shell over the fabric gloves. This ended up being a low-cost, high performance ticket for my warm digit fixation. CHEERS! Mike

  6. Nice... toasty paws are the bomb. How many runs did Pak have open by Monday?

Heads-up for everyone . . . these gloves will need the chemical warmers or an additional liner, maybe both, to actually keep my cold digits warm during sub-zero days. Appropriate gloves for those warmer spring skiing days. Have my eyes on 3-finger (lobster claw) gloves - just have to get over sticker shock.

Ian . . . the Loop, Upper and Lower Exhibition - basically one run only. But, it was great to have the muscle memory kick-in, no crowds, and remnant cord to enjoy.
