    Echo.

Sad for Dave and Kristen. Sad for all those who were planning to go. Sad for the people of Libby who welcome attendees and who ride Turner through its season.

Agreed. I know Dave puts his heart and soul into these events, and this is a real shame.

Reach out to Steve Recsky aka “Riceball” on this site. See if you can hook up w him. Guy rips

Steve and son Brad are frequently out at Nakiska and would be great company for you. Plus he has a bunch of alpine boards that I'm sure he'll be happy to loan you for a day.

If you can manage a couple of nights away then you should take James up on his offer. The drive to Revy is breathtaking, Revy is a wonderful little mountain town, and the hill's better carving than you'd find around Banff. Plus James is an amazing rider who makes you better by osmosis.

I saw this when you posted, can’t believe I didn’t follow up

just downloaded it, in the backlog now 🙂

LOL! I bought it, read two chapters, abandoned it when an audiobook came into the library and never went back to it. It will probably be next January before I read it.

I preordered the last book in the Olivie Blake's Atlas trilogy for Jan 2024 too, that will probably suffer the same fate.

  4. I'm really surprised that Nakiska, the closest hill to Calgary, hasn't jumped on this bandwagon. As far as I can tell, the resort sits idle all summer - there's no hiking access or biking trails there, despite it being located in a high traffic summer activity area. Calgary is a big city with a huge MTB population, but the nearest lift accessed riding is three hours away at either Fernie or Kicking Horse. The Banff hills have summer gondola access and Sunshine's gets to some great hiking, and Lake Louise is busier in the summer than the winter - but RCR seems content to let Nakiska sit empty for months at a time. Maybe they need a few more bad snow years to convince them.

You said “North America”, so look at Banff, flying into Calgary.

Going to second everyone's recommendations for Canada, because your exchange rate is giving you 25% right now and it's likely to stay that way. Calgary is a cheap flight and well serviced from Portland. There's tons of off piste stuff for everyone to do in Banff (bring your wallet), it's a iconic town with dining and nightlife.

The other place I'd suggest is Revelstoke. I adore Revy, it's the cutest little town, and I've heard amazing things about the resort even though I've never personally been. If you wanted to road trip a little and had a vehicle, it's a four-ish hour drive from Banff to Revy through some stunning scenery and a few days at each place would make for a pretty cool trip.

I was doing some pre-season window shopping for outerwear and methinks this brand has gone under. The site is gone and the domain is unregistered.

The search for a cheap made-in-canuckistan jacket with great waterproofing continues.

Taiga Works looks like they're still around. Looks like they're not doing full Goretex any more, but might be worth a look.

While there may be a lull now, the world is not back to pre-Covid norms. There will likely be a new normal. Facemasks/coverings were very common on snow riders of all ages at Cardrona this NZ winter.

Things are a little different in NZ than they are in the rest of the world - although I hear it's likely all your restrictions will be lifted in the next couple of weeks as well. For the most part, the rest of the world has already moved on. Here in Alberta you're not even required to isolate if you have covid now ... you can go to work and they "suggest" you wear a mask. I'm just looking forward to being able to put my boots on, and drink my coffee, in a warm lodge and not my car.

  8. The last 2 months I've been on a GPP program which has included things like sled pushes (ugh), 85lb barbell walking lunges (just kill me), sets of 4 and 5 clean and jerks (it burns), and 140lb x20 tempo back squats (whyyyyyy). For sure a lot more lactic acid than I like. Coach says I'll be on similar stuff right up to November, so right in time for the start of the season. I'm actually looking forward to seeing if it helps with my riding this year. Last year I barely rode but I was so out of shape I was dying after 3 hours, which does not give you a great return on a $100 day out, lol.

I bought a local season pass this year again, and I'm really looking forward to all the covid stuff being done and the season being back to normal.

In contrast the ski areas in the South Island have had more snow this year than for 20 years.

I heard that, but I didn't know about Ruapehu. The weather in the South Island (and a lot of the North Island) this winter has been interesting, to say the least. Parents live in a no precipitation zone in Blenheim, and they had a year's worth of rain in a week. Meanwhile in Calgary, this has been consistently the hottest summer I can remember since I moved here 20 years ago. We don't usually get that many days over 30C, and this year we've had weeks of them. It will be interesting to see how this winter shapes up.

And don't forget that it is legally allowed to have up to 10mg of rat poop per pound in your cocoa beans!

if it's monkey poop in your coffee, some people even pay extra for it.
