    Wednesday was AWESOME!!

It had snowed several inches each day for several days prior. Tuesday evening groom with about 2" of fairly dense snow over the top. 10 degrees to start. The snow was fairly slow so we didn't have to work on keeping our speeds down.

Gregory, Arne & I did a couple on Firebowl / Turtle Creek. We were all on wide boards & soft boots. Very few people and amazing grip. Assume you have the run to yourself because you do.

Over to #4 and then to #8 about 9:30. Powder under the lift. Awsome was AWSOME! Chet's Run was wonderful carving. On one lift ride up Arne commented that it might be a little soft (but he said it with a huge grin on his face).

We kept alternating between Awsome and Chet's. Gregory was leaving 6" to 8" trenches at the apex of his turns. On one lift ride up I figured that our combined age was nearly 200 years.

By 11:30 my legs and back were shot. We headed back over to the front side and I stopped about noon. Arne and Gregory kept at it on #6 and Chet's Dream. I think they got in another 3 - 4 runs by 1 PM. Arne's Ski Tracker gave out before he did. It showed 13 runs but I think they got in about 15 or 16.

I've been snow sliding since about 1968. I'd have to say Wednesday could have been the best day ever for me. I've had some great powder days but they usually only last a few hours. Snow conditions on Wednesday were amazing until I couldn't take it anymore.

It was a good day. The pow was dense and deep enough so that you didn't feel the base underneath. Not too cold or windy. 14 degrees all day. Groom was a bit soft.

Yesterday was pretty mediocre. Old, scratchy snow, visibility was marginal and got worse as the day wore on.

Gregory & I rode up together and met Arne in the lodge. We met up with Mr. E on Ptarmigan. Rode some on Firebowl, Dueces, Roulette, Richard's and Mambo. Visibility got pretty bad by 11:30 and we called it quits after about 2 1/2 hours.

I guess if there were no mediocre days, we wouldn't appreciate the good & great ones.

But Cabin Creek Brewing was good!

Gregory & I went up Wednesday and met Arne up there. We were on softboots, Arne on hardboots.

Arne was smooooth as butta'. Riding on 2 fake hips and 2 fake knees. We joked that he should be a spokesperson for (and sponsored by) the prosthetic joint manufacturer:

"Before I got my Acme hips and Acme knees, I couldn't even spell snowboard. Now look at me!"

We discovered that there is no reason to get up there early. They don't open the lodge until 8AM so you just have to sit in your car. No fun.

Drive up no problem. Weather was nice - light breeze and passing clouds. Crowds were light but more than years previous. Snow was good but they really need more. I think we got in about 15 runs from 9AM until shortly after 1PM. Firebowl, Turtle Creek, Duces Wild, Roulette and Keno. They opened Lift #4 and it got completely tracked out by 1PM. Drive home was a breeze. Planning on next Wednesday again.

It was a good day. Snow was fairly soft, yet great for carving! Getting my Zimmer equiped tattoos soon!

I understand heel lift in and of itself. arneburner's question was if people really need so much of it that they add external heel lift for a boot that has such a lot of it already built in. Personally I ride without heel lift, but I use toe lift on the front foot to negate some of the built-in heel lift.

You are correct. Just wondered if you needed  17 degress of heel lift. ( 11 +6) It seems excessive to me.  0 rear and 6 front seems balanced to me.

  6. Had a good carving day Monday despite the throngs of what appeared to be college students. Started out being met by a guy having his Coors breakfast. Got to yell "turn dumbass" at the typical straight liners on Roulette and "Look uphill dumbass" to the guy jumping out of the woods right in front of you near the bottom of Richards. All in all, a typical day with a full parking lot.

  7. Day 2 at Loveland was much better than day 1. Got in 3 quick runs before there was a line. Got in 7 more by 10:30. Front leg burn was much better than day 1 with application of rear foot pressure through the middle of the turn. Richards seemed softer.

I think there's a shoulder in there as well...

Nope, just a bicep tendon release and soon to be 2 carpal tunnel releases.

So Arne - this is 2x fake knees and 2x fake hips? If you keep replacing parts you'll never die!

Have to keep on riding. They are not really fake, I prefer artificial. I am getting a tatoo that says "Zimmer equipped"

  9. Went yesterday for 1st runs on 9 week old knee. Most singles paired up to make a double. There were a few who chose to ride alone. Mambo snow was good. Richards was firm. Snowmaking on 6 looks like it could open soon. Got in 10 runs before front leg was done. New one on back felt good.

I will second the above post. Now for fun, try to get through a few rounds of the mini leg blasters without curling up in the corner in the fetal position sucking on your tear soaked thumb. These. Are. Deceptively BRUTAL. But highly effective. 30 seconds of rest between. They are also quite humbling, you may need to work up to the prescribed number of sets, as well as down to the painfully short rest period.  I have found these to be much more betterer than stupid heavy squats for me. Your mileage may vary.

In the interim, hit up the sports legs, be dynamic on the board to help flush out the lactic acid, and be patient

I didn't prep this year due to low expectations for the season.  I may have made a slight tactical error there, trying to ride my fat ass into shape at the moment

Thanks for the link. Like this workout.  My butt and knees not so much!

    Damn spoiled retired guys.

Arne, thanks again for your help back in December, I really appreciated that!

    Mario

Glad to help. Didn't  realize it was as bad as it was. The drive home must have been tough. Glad you are back ripping on the board. Will try to make it up one of these sundays.
