Saw this on their website. Looks like Burton race plates:

The reason for a releasable binding on a ski is that you can twist your leg off if you fall and turn. On a snowboard, since both legs are attached to the same plane, your legs cannot be twisted; your hips twist instead. I've never heard of injuries due to this.
Problems I see with releasable snowboard bindings:
[*]Figuring out when it is that you would want to release
[*]Making the release happen
[*]Making both bindings release, to avoid the ski problem mentioned above
[*]Making a brake mechanism so that boards wouldn't go launching down the hill, but also so leashes wouldn't be required
[*]Since people ride with such a wide range of stance angles, the range of "unsafe" motion varies hugely. One rider's unsafe (a duck-footer leaning towards the front of the board) may be an essential part of another's technique (someone riding 60/45 putting some weight on the nose)
[/list=1]
There is one situation in which a manually releasable binding would be useful: when riding deep powder. The ability to release your binding without reaching your board is potential a major safety enhancement if you're riding off-piste or in anything deep.

Hey Ken, are you going to be working at Wachusett again this year?
-
Use the same carnuba wax that you would on your car.
-
Volkl has that on some of their skis this year. I'm not a fan of it.
-
well, if you consider cart-wheeling or endo-ing down 2100 vertical feet "riding," then my answer would have to be waist deep fluffy stuff at Stowe two seasons ago, all I had was my FP164.

Jack,
I spoke with Beckman last weekend. He'd like to see some sort of hardbooter gathering this year. Perhaps the three of us can put something together.
As for people breaking boards, I think a large part of it is a macho thing. Certainly accidents do happen, but if someone is regularly breaking boards then he is clearly doing something pretty wrong, and covering it up with "I'm just too tough for the equipment."
I did break a board once, but it was entirely due to abuse. I overshot a table and landed on the tail - SNAP!

I'll trade crowded slopes for long lift lines any day. I haven't been so southern VT in a couple of years because the slopes looked like Rt9 on its worst day.
-
When getting off of the lift on softies, I was like Derek Zoolander: I could only turn right.
After I switched to hard boots, it was as if I had perfected Magnum.

Is it a problem if I do that w/o a snowboard? I mean while standing in line in street shows or something. Oops :)
Oldsnwbrdr - I find that because of the higher angles and stiffer boots, getting off of the lift is actually easer on one of these setups - especially on the heelside.

Is it really 10:1? I thought one inch of rain was equal to 10" of snowfall? That would put the base at the same density as water, which would also mean it is more dense than ice.

Even today, most skiers dont get it. I won a free subscription to Skiing magazine at a Warren Miller movie, and the ski tests they do never list sidecut radius. Hello??
Also I just checked the websites for Atomic and Rossignol - they both only list sidecut radius for one length of any particular model. I say again - Hello???
Isn't this because the sidecut matters less with a ski because they flex so much more? The so-called "natural arc" of a snow-riding tool is not purely a function of its sidecut. With flex characteristics varying so much, giving only the sidecut can be misleading.
Also, it's not uncommon for skis of the same family but different lengths to have the same sidecut radius. There is no technical reason for this, it's simply because people would think the skis look funny otherwise.

11 days until the Loaf opens, and I hear that Ktown opened today.
Flurries all over MA last night, too.
LET THERE BE SNOW

Not nude fabric, but an unmolested laminate - just fabric + clear resin. It would be strictly CF though - not a lame faux finish or overlay.

The ones with the touch wheels and buttons placed around the wheel.
Of this group, how many of you would be interested in a carbon fiber case for it to replace either the white front, the metallic back, or both?

I'm from Sherborn. Used to work at Elm Bank when I was in high school.

Yeah, I too though he was reading a post-it note someone had left there. ;)

Bob,
Have I seen those pups at Elm Bank before?
For everyone else:

If it's 45minutes in good weather, then I bet that when it snows I'll do it in 25 :D :D
CSM didn't really have any appropriate rentals. They primarily had houses and condos for sale, and their rentals are for people looking to be there for a week or so.
I haven't reached Beckman yet. Do you have a number where I could reach him directly, or is my best bet to call the front desk and see if they can find him? Or am I likely to see him while I'm up there this weekend?

Looking to ride all winter/teach at the Loaf.
The impression I got is that Farmington is going to be very inexpensive, which is important given my source of income :) Will Kingfield and Stratton be the same?
-
Where would I look for a room in the Sugarloaf/Farmington area? Are there any online listings?
I'm looking to rent from ~ Dec 20 though March and probably April.

I've found that with the D70 I usually need to go +1/3 when I shoot in aperture priority mode and +2/3 on the rare occasions I opt for point & shoot.
These two pics were good on the meter, but both could really use 1/3 more light. (pics are full-res, so be prepared to wait & scroll)

The dealer didn't mention anything about that. I will check the manual later though.
Of course, if the motor blows a couple of years from now and they try to deny the warranty, they don't really have a leg to stand on.
