For both boards you could totally use the same boots/bindings interface if well chosen.

exactement - that's what i am looking for recommendation.  Getting me close to the "ball park".
Board i am not planning to have only one lol....

My first snowboard is a Donek incline wide that i got from craigslist; that lead me to this wonderful community.  The rest is history.

coming from HB - i assume stiffer is better? until it isn't 🙂

Boots - fit - wide toe box, narrow heel and big calf.  dual BOA would be nice.  i have enough boots liner sitting around that i can experiment with.
Binding - have not kept up with binding tech.

    step-on/easy on/off isn't a big deal for me.

will go watch crackaddict's video a few more time for good measure.

  2. for HB - i guess i understand the concept but not sure what the "noun" is in softboot?

    quiver building
1 SL - for busy, icy day 163-165ish 10-12m and below side cut
1 GS - when you have the mountain to youself 180-185 big side cut; your courage is the limitation here
1 Freecarve (if you can only have one) milk those C turns 174 ~!2-14m variable
    1 pow board

find a boot that fit well; stiffness can be tune by changing out tongue, spring system
Deeluxe - narrow toe box wide heel - toe box punched out and lots lots of foam for heel lift
UPZ - wide toebox narrow heel - decent fit out the box
MS - medium toebox, medium heel (need to have toe box punch out and figure something out for heel lift)
    binding -
    F2 titanium - flexy
    SG - Goldilock
    TD3 - laterally stiff

  3. Thanks James!  Exactly looking to get new modern softboot setup.
I start out with softboot and was decent at it; then got bitten by the carve bug and HB ever since.  I understand fully on compromises.

Was hoping there are some overlapping between (boots/binding mostly; switch to pow board on deep day make sense)

    A dedicated softboot carve setup
    vs
all mountain softboot setup that focus on hardpack 50% of the time and rest on seeking powder after dump (side of the trail, shallow trees, soft bumps).

Like most hoarder here i have quivers of quivers 🙂
I went back/forth between optimized the right HB board/setup for the day to just one board to "rule them all".  Currently 174 Contra (WoGo varient) is my go-to.
    195lb 6' (28" inseam - long torso, short leg,
Quasimodo build lol)  26.5 boots MS 951 with SG binding

the 174 seems to do well in most conditions(up to 6" of pow/crud)  and excellent on hardpack/ice.  in the Tree the length is limiting for me due to my lack of experience in tree.

  4. i am getting older.  charing hard all day in HB is beyond my physical conditioning.  i will survive but dead after.
Plus condition isn't always conducive to carving.  i still love powder, little jumps here and there, maybe some trees.

boot - wide forefeet, narrow heel, big calf
malamute, ion, Insanos are the typical "stiff"

    accessory:
    strapins
    https://forums.alpinesnowboarder.com/store/category/5-powerride/

binding - catek, gumbo Power Plate System, flux, c-10, DIY 3rd strap?

board:  alloy, Coiler, Donek.  not too worry about board but boot shape and binding

took me decade+ to kinda dial in HB.
want to see if we can short circuit for SB.

or TLDR what's your setup and what are your setup?

  5. quick Google:

    https://www.donek.com/product/aloha/

not so much interest in the board but boot/bidning setup for being  to take softboot riding into the level that IG video show.
I like flowy style as observer but like to dial up the aggressiveness up when i ride.  as i get older maybe the mellower style is nice one to add to the bag of tricks.

kona sound like aloha with secret construction

    base price $815 Aloha

    options -
Waist Width Wider than 28cm +$80.00

Ready to Ride Tune - Hot Wax(in hot box) and tip/tail edge detune +$30.00

     Secret Construction +$350.00

     Make it a Split +$256.00

    gets $$$ quickly....

    Flux received... Disappointed...

I ordered a board with the "ready to ride tune" addon : not waxed, no tip/tail edge detune...

I ordered a board with the "secret construction" addon : impossible to know if it has been built with that or not...

Custom board, but not what I ordered !!! For such a high price, I am really disappointed

sorry to hear that.  Contact Sean/Donek to see what they have to say.

i am a practitioner of praise publicly criticize privately.  when all else fail; then it's time to air out dirty laundry.

    FWIW:
i got a custom(won a raffle) from Donek and the label was wrong but it's one of the best board i have ever ridden.  it elevate my riding to a new level.

These are still mostly hand made; low number(relative speaking) artisanal board.  I don't think big item like secret construction will be miss; but little thing it might.  missing tune seems to fall somewhere in the middle.  are there structure on the base? are you expecting thick coat of wax?

go ride and hopefully all the worry just melt away 🙂

  7. Revelation or brain fart ? -
using lowest angle without overhang, some degree of splay help when i was engaged edge using boot/liner tongue/drive with knee.

now with busted/weak back knee - can't drive the board using old technique so i have to pivot.  Initiated turn from the feet/lower stack.  in this case degree/leverage is less of a concerns?  but it's like squeezing ballon; this seems to put more stress on my back.... that's a whole different problem....

the track are ephemeral.  Bob dance a silent poem in snow whispers tales of grace
leaving me yearning to feel the rush, to become the artist of the next unridden line.
    The memory remain..

  10. nice!  my old knee and poor back are envious of the youthful exuberance.

As long as you are having a blast - don't take the following too seriously.  I love the playful/dynamic style.
Try bend away from the snow and not reaching down.
There is some subtle difference between diving to the turn and bending at the waist and reaching for the snow.

That video will have to remain private...

For "private" lesson contact 🤣 the end was great.

i like it:  there is an element of  Zeno's paradise at play
    holding tray - static/good start
directional tray - a bit more dynamic
hand on knee - more dynamic
dynamic weighting/compression <-- this is the step that Eureka moment that elude me from 1-3 for a long time.

Akin to how to convey the feeling of carving to those who is not yet ready to receive it or have not experience it?

those who get it already have burden of knowledge.  How do we bridge that gap between step 3 to 4?
some might have problem from step 1 to 2.  everyone progress differently.  some might have jump straight to step 10.

here is where Zeno comes in - unless someone is at the same cusp of discovery - it's difficult to try to explain that half of the half (Dichotomy Paradox).

It's gotta start somewhere and a great start.  I enjoy it and watch it a few time.  <we need more cat content>

This is one of the real killers.  If you want to stay in the flow, but don't have capacity to check behind you from time to time your risk goes way up and the consequences are impossible to estimate (unlike collisions with static objects).

it's not willful ignorance of my own safety.  i am at the edge/limit of my carving ability on those run where it's going to take all i got to "conquer" otherwise hitting lift tower or tree are equally bad 🙂 as you say "cpu" is too slow lol... when i do come out of the danger zone (kenny loggins playing in the background) - i was like holy hell where was i just now? and where did all these ppl come from.  on easy/comfortable trail - yes i check my six.

not saying this is right/wrong but what we do have inherent risk.  Life is risky but minimized our risk while maximized our enjoyment is all we can do.  Chicken a la Risk management.

@ktv this is the current version Patriot is selling.  pressure over instep is what i am worry about as well.
I am trying different liners (not zipfit) but i am getting heel lift in the back foot.

Pat:  what did you decide to go with?  any luck/update?

foam or sleeves 🙂  or just ride with blister with duct tape

  15. How does other deal with "staying in the flow"?
That's one of the best feeling to be in the zone; head check took away some of the enjoyment.
perhaps i had to focus on too many things and only have so much mental bandwidth for some.

this is just my anecdotal experience -
Beginner carver tend to get hit a lot:  just learning, too many things to focus on, plus the turn could be erratic/less predictable for uphill skier.

Patience, waiting for clearing is great advice.  it mostly work in less crowd mountain.
carve fast, be predictable, check up hill sometime will still get you hit.

  16. Just do you!  my 2cents on length: i like long form podcast as nuance matter.
Comprehensive vs narrow focus/bite size chunk - each have merit.
Focus on your core identity and don't go chasing waterfall/other are doing.
it's also depends on your goal - hobby/knowledge/passion sharing that turn into monetization?
I hope you win(passion)/win(money)/win(brand).  look forward to the journey you are taking.
if you are trying to be Mr. Beast then i don't have a clue on how to do that.
That would be super cool though 🙂

  17. haha... i watch about 50k times.

writing down mostly for myself -
patience was a great reminder/tip/lesson.  it never occur to me; that i was trying to do too much too fast  as i feel i am always a beat or two behind.

i have lots of problem between front/back side imbalnce.
some day my toe side is stronger some day my heel is my go to.
Today i trust my heel more and by being more patience on the front/toe side.
It got me closer to that carving eden(balance) that I was kick out of.

    a useful feedback loop.
When everything click - snowboard make a low frequency whoosh sound almost rumbling.
speed/energy getting burned off.  It's addicting.

  18. Amazing video!  magnum opus indeed.
putting clear conscience words/describing something my body can barely do.
i send it to bunch of my softboot friends that love carving.

one problem after watching:  urge to run away from work and joining the circus rising.

The content is not specific to setup: hardboot vs softboot; but any addition on hardboot that you want to point out/share?

    Good reminder:

Funny - when i first starting out:  most of these article does not click/make much sense.  I do think some beginner will still get lost by your video.  We have so called the "burden of knowledge".  To standardized nomenclature allow for much more effective communication and distribution of wisdom.

      clickhttp://alpinesnowboarder.com/tech-articles/

love that feeling hand touch down (center of radius) and draw a circle with my snowboard and continue over and over....

Finding our own style that work i think is the most fun part.
freedom of varying degrees of rotation/compression, extension, push/pull/angulation/bomber/race/euro

How else am I going to get some rest to keep up with carve machine like you 😊

that and bath room break is the only time I get to catch my breath lol
