  1. You know what, I had considered it and I just wasn't sure if there was a board that I would be good enough to ride. They're all very racey, whereas the 168 Kessler was recommended to me by Mr. Kessler as it apparently is their more freecarve oriented model, even though it can be used for racing too, if you wish. Apparently it's an allround board or something like this.

Regarding the SGs I just don't know what would really suit, although it was under consideration at one time, but it just seemed easier to go the other way...

I have not ridden the 170 SG, so I cannot say how it compares to my 168 Kessler or my 175 SG. It could definitely be more aggressive than the 168 Kessler. I am pretty sure it is the SG freecarve model though. The 168 Kessler is friendly, but it is still a Kessler and you will want to stay on top of it (it knows if you are afraid).

  2. I do not know anything about Jasey Jay boards unfortunately. Hopefully this thread will offer some insight. I certainly assume they are top notch and look forward to trying one at some point.

I have had a 162 and 168 Kessler for the last couple of years. I just got a 175 SG and am really impressed. The boards are not a perfect comparison (Kessler SL and all around to an SG GS) but the SG has more torsional stiffness than my Kesslers which seems to mean more edge grip at speed but worse low speed handling. I like the SG enough that I am considering adding an SG SL board.

Have you considered a 170 SG with an SG plate?

  3. Buell, this has always been an issue with all snowboards, as snowboards have always had sidecut. Skis only caught up 10 or 15 years ago, right? If you slide a straight ski flat on it's base, everything is fine. When you slide a shaped ski or snowboard flat on its base, image the side-cut as being more dramatic than it is. The snow passes under the tip edges fine, as these edges are 'dragging' in the safe direction (blue arrow shows snow motion). The tail edges are moving 'knife-side' into the snow, so they catch very easily on the snow that is trying to slide under them (red arrow).

My Kastle skis are 16m VSR, and at high speeds will shimmy in a very unstable way if I try to stand flat on them. That's not even a tight radius. Try the same thing on slalom skis and you'll fear for your life. Tighter radius, higher speeds, less base edge bevel, and higher torsional stiffness all increase the amount that the rear edges will catch if run flat on the base.

I don't find running flat to be an issue. It is important that you are not twisting the board as you do it though.

  4. Shaped skis and snowboards DO NOT like to run flat on their bases.

Aside from a little less effective edge on the snow on decambered boards verses old school camber, what makes "shaped skis and snowboards" (I assume you mean modern designs) any different than other designs when running flat?

  5. Board is sale pending.

I am selling this board for a friend.

For sale is a custom 156 Prior MFR metal, same construction as their alpine boards. The board has hardly been ridden, is in mint condition and is beautiful. It is stiffer than a stock MFR of this size and should work well with both softboots or hardboots. Waist width is 245mm.

  6. Were you up today Kipp? It was incredibly cold. We made it up at noon to play around in the skinning area on the back of Lightning Ridge. The Hidden Lakes weather station was -7 to -10 all day. Wow!

  7. What a great day today was, a little chopped up, but we were still able to ride the Powder Weapons, Swallowtails, and have a fun day. Tomorrow should be great for the carving, ginsu knives riding, trenching day.

Hope to see and meet all of the Pow Mow carvers this year.

Dickie and Kipp were both up there today disguised as powder riders. We took off after one run to climb James. We got 4 epic laps with almost no one up there. Jim and Ron come for next Sunday and we'll try to get UP up there soon.

  8. My stance width is 18.5"+/-, and I'm 5'6". While carpet surfing I was thinking of moving the 3 degree plate to the front foot, but I placed the 0 degree on the front based on this:

    : https://bomberonline.3dcartstores.com/Choosing-Cants_ep_53-1.html - second to last paragraph.

I'm on my way to CO for a week now. I can play some with the setup, but I was hoping someone had the same issue before and could help me narrow down the amount of tweaking I needed to do. I have been able to figure out how to get a more balance stance since I started.

Try both to know what works for you. You have described a current issue you are having as getting weight off you front foot. It could be a more significant technique issue but a zero degree disc will likely put more weight forward than toe lift. Use lift to adjust where your weight distribution between your legs. If you want weight off the front leg, increase the front toe lift or decrease the rear heel lift. That will shift you back.

  9. Thanks Kipstar.

I am largely wanting to be in that area for the BC in the eastern Sierra. Kirkwood is also a possibility but not as close to the east side. Beyond that I am looking for a mountain to carve at and ride the occasional mixed conditions day. We like it pretty quiet and don't go out to eat or drink much.

At the moment we are continuing to look in the wider area but will probably end up being very close to Mammoth for next year. We will also probably hedge our bets with a full Mammoth pass so we can go to June and Mammoth until we know the area better.

  10. P.M. got 12" last night, so I could care less right now about The Summit Group.

It was fun today for sure. Cold knee deep powder.

Yesterday the dirt piles from the new private lodge construction got partially relocated to the entire area around the Hidden Lakes lift. The entire area was orange with lots of pebbles to 1" rocks. It is amazing how big of gravel will blow around in 50 mph winds.

We'll be dealing with the gravel getting off the lift for a while since the groomers will just keep turning it up. Sucks. Thanks Summit.

  11. Thanks for the beta.

KC, I never figured I would get bored at Mammoth. Just possibly driven away by the scene. Stoked for you on going for it. That is the way to an epic life.

Nekdut, sounds like some great runs and scene.

Any thoughts on where to find rentals for 2 months? We are looking at VRBO and it seems Mammoth is the main option. June Lake appears far more expensive than I expected. Are there any good areas outside of Mammoth we should be looking at?

  12. Medium F2 Race Titanium bindings - $160 each, including shipping to the lower 48. All sets are sold. Thank you.

    Thanks, Buell

  13. I know it is closed this year but understand they are planning to open it for next season. How is the carving at Mt June? I like its reputation for empty runs. Are there many good carving runs? Is there anything steep or steeper? Would I be bored there if that was my only carving mountain (I also do a lot of backcountry so I am not totally dependent on the resort).

I really dislike big scenes and crowded slopes. Is there any hope I would like riding at Mammoth for a couple of months? I assume the terrain is better for carving but am pretty concerned about the scene. I can avoid the weekends.

    Thanks, Buell

  14. Maybe it's just me, but they kinda smell like a religious cult. I hope they don't build some huge sweat lodge up there.

I think the religion is money, exclusivity and partying.

I do not know for sure, but it seems to me they are marketing the real estate to high end clients by not directly talking much about marketing the real estate. They are developers pretending to not be developers.

The two resorts concept is the weird stuff to me. There is the area that normal people can continue to ride and then there is 'our' terrain, complete with a separate lodge and amenities. Don't know. Hope we can get through this year and be done with it.
