chrisk
I'm headed to BigSky in February and I see lots of press about BigSky and Moonlight Basin. While Wikipedia has a basic description of the two areas, it doesn't shed too much light on how they are related. While I'm staying at BigSky, should I plan on spending some time at Moonlight? Is there an advantage to buying a combo ticket (both mtns)? Which mountain has the best carving? Thanks in advance. Chris K
slopetool
You are going to love it, Chris. I've been to both mountains. I believe Big Sky has more wide open runs but both have great grooming. Both areas have different terrain. Its definitely worthwhile to go to both areas and explore. The combo ticket for the same day is overkill so I would choose one or the other each day. Staying at Big Sky is a better too. There is some sort of nightlife there if you want to get out. You could get some powder so don't show up empty handed with only your race board! haha
chrisk
Thanks much for the feedback. Excellent point about the combo ticket. I currently have a Tanker 182 and Coiler VSR packed. I think that should cover things well. I also have reservations for a snowmobile tour of Yellowstone on Wednesday. All in all, it should be a good trip. Thanks again. two_ravens
I have only been there one weekend. They hadn't groomed Moonlight at all - would have been a great powder day there, but the carving at Big Sky was so superb that we just stayed there, even with combo tickets for one of the days. I believe there is a lift at Big Sky that will get you over to Moonlight, and no doubt one from Moonlight that will get you back again. Have fun! kinpa
Are you the Chris who came out to Schweitzer a few years ago for the first NICE?
chrisk
>>kinpa >>Are you the Chris who came out to Schweitzer a few years ago for the first NICE? Yup. One in the same. Last year was Tamarack and Brundage, this year is BigSky. I'm trying not to go a resort I've already been to, atleast for the next few years. Tell everyone at NICE I said hello. >>two_ravens >>I have only been there one weekend. Good to know about combo tickets. I'm staying slopeside at BigSky so I'll probably spend most of my time there. Sorry I missed SKES, if you decide to start it again, please post the dates well in advance and I'll see if I can make it. The hot tub looked very inviting. kinpa
Yup. One in the same. I knew it!!!! My memory is pretty good for an old lady! hahahahaha..... we did our annual NICE trip a few weeks ago. Was changed to January and the weather was awesome! check out the pics on the Idaho board.... I wanted to let you know that the Donek Axxess proved to be a bit to much of a board for me. I had fun riding in when the conditions were perfect, but other than that it was tough! Also wanted to let you know that it was passed on to a more than capable rider and it has already become his go to board! So, that big ole green Donek (ok, big to me, maybe not for everyone else!) is seeing a lot of on snow time this year!!!!!

OhD
Chris I'll be interested in a trip report as I'm heading there at the end of the month with my wife and 6 friends. We're driving so the whole quiver goes. I see they got another 8" lately, but it still looks kind of skimpy. I hope it snows some for you! kinpa
There it is! making the rounds..... he rides it well! What am I riding these days? Well, mostly skiing... I've given up on teaching snowboarding for the most part so spending much more time on my skiis! Also, trying to get my youngest (5 year old son) going on his skiis so in between teaching, I've been helping him. When I do get to ride (mostly just at events with other folks from here!), I'm riding a Hot Shine which was also a hand-me-down! It helps who you know! (www.oldsnowboards.com) or maybe I should say who the boyfriend knows! he acquired the board for me hahahahahahaa Heading up to Whitefish later this week to join some other folks from here.... it will be nice to get away. Right now, I think Whitefish is getting dumped on so I'm hoping for good groomers by the end of the week!

I'm in Montana, but about 5 hours away from Big Sky... and if I wasn't so poor, I'd try to make the trip!!!! but you aren't that far from us.... wave as you drive through Missoula! Where do you usually ride? Ever go to Lookout Pass? great carving hill, I think.....
OhD
Thanks. I'll ping him. We've driven past Lookout a few times but never skied or ridden there. We did a day at Discovery on the way to Big Sky last time - probably ~20 years ago and early in the season. Lookout is a little short of halfway (~4hr) to Big Sky (from Richland WA) but if we get a late start on Friday maybe it'll make sense to stop in the neighborhood and get in a short day Saturday (2/23). Let me know if you're going to be at the hill and I'll try and dawdle some. I mostly ride at White Pass WA, but usually get to Schweitzer, Mission, Bachelor, Bluewood, Hood, Stevens Pass, Baker (my original home mountain), Whistler or several Eastern BC areas, Anthony Lakes and a major US resort/cluster every year or two. About half at White Pass and long weekends/one or two week-long vacations elsewhere. My wife still skis (bumps, well, at 59) so I don't get to carve groomers all day, but riding moguls is apparently good for you (if not for your gear).
