NEWRY, Maine (AP) A Massachusetts man was killed when he skied off an expert slope and into the woods at the Sunday River ski resort over the weekend.

John Kerr, 46, of Sharon, may have hit a tree or a lift tower near the White Heat trail on Saturday, according to the Oxford County Sheriff's Department.

It was Maine's first skier fatality of the season.

The sheriff's office was awaiting the official cause of death from the state medical examiner. Chief Deputy Jim Davis said investigators were not aware of any medical condition that may have contributed to the accident and had no reason to believe he was intoxicated.

I friend who used to drive snocats was involved in a fatality a few years back...he was grooming a closed trail about midday, a father and son ducked the rope and bombed the trail while he was headed up...the only thing Chris saw was the kid flying off a roller...to my knowedge Chris has not been back to a Ski resort since...it's sad to hear stories on death on the slopes but at least the guy died doing something he loved
