SEJ
Willy, thats awesome. Any advise on how to get started in Kiteboarding? I already wakeboard. I watch them kite in front of my house.
willywhit
just go out and get a trainer kite to learn the basics. http://www.greenhatkiteboarding.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=20 watching the video is key. Call up Andrey, my russian buddy down in jersey at Green Hat and mention my name. 718-577-1256 He stays in my camper on cape cod when he comes up to kite with us. Great guy. There's an amazing kiting scene in SF where you are. Hang out at Crissy Field or down at 3rd Ave and chat up some locals. Kiters are a friendly bunch, like us carvers. Even a trip to waddel is worth driving, bring a camera and lotsa beer and just hang out. Look for the guys with the crazy beards. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw0LdvDwyG8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw0LdvDwyG8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49o4XWNhOq0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49o4XWNhOq0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Caution Kites is the real deal down there. Scheibel Bros are the best ! Wish there was kiting when I lived in SF back in 1998-99.I windsurfed alot and worked at Windsurf Bicycle Warehouse in South SF. SEJ
Saw a guy at the park below my house in Benicia getting a kite ready so went down and talked to him. Friendly guy, gave me alot of input. He suggested a couple schools up in Rio Vista. Said he flew a trainer for about an hour then they put him on the water. I think I'd really want to have the kite as second nature before adding the board.

Look out for the killer umbrellas ! SEJ
Got a trainer kite today. Bay area kiting portal is like BOL for bay area kiters. Hooked up with a guy giving lessons up in Bodega and he sold me the whole thing for $100. Obsession Imp 2.5. Flew it a little, but I've got a broken finger right now so I didn't spend too much time with it today. The wind wasn't real strong and it was gusting so every time it went slack the kite just turned into a ball, crashed, and got the lines all tangled up. I was suprised at the pull of the little thing. I can see it will take some practice to get this dialed in, but once I'm comfortable with the kite I will start lessons. HERE WE GO! SEJ
Turns out it's probably not broken. I just assumed it was because it looks and feels just like a broken toe. A nurse friend looked at it and said it's probably just a lot of soft tissue damage. I smashed it between a large propane cylinder and the bed of my truck. Can you spell YEOWWWW! Actually doesn't hurt now, just feels numb. Skateboard + kite will equal lost skin at this point. I got some practicing to do. I haven't skated since high school. Actually that was another thing I was thinking of looking into. Got a skate run right in front of my house. I'm a little confused wjth all the equipment out there though. Listening to the guys talk here I think I could spend a lot of money on a bunch of wrong stuff. Wind's pretty slack, the straights are barely capping, hope it picks up later. Hey, Scott - send me mail if you have any questions about the area or when you start getting up and running - I've been kiting out here at Alameda, Berkeley, and Foster City for the past 2 or 3 months now, and I'm having a blast. I probably flew the trainer for about 5-6 hours, took a land lesson, took a water lesson, and then I was pretty much ready to go out and fall down over and over on my own. Good stuff. Learning curve is super fast if you can figure the kite out and since you already snowboard - I'm already getting ~10 feet of air and doing some carve transitions. If you were recommended the kitopia school up by Rio Vista that is supposed to be the best kite school around here. Otherwise kitewindsurf in Alameda is good, too. I wouldn't obsess too much about the trainer - as long as you're not steering the bar like a steering wheel, and have it pretty burned into your subconscious to just pull whichever end you want it to turn and don't have a death grip on the thing (so you can do little figure 8s without thinking about it too much), it's probably already enough; the real kites are so different anyways, with the sheeting in and out and all of that. SEJ
Appreciate the offer KJL. The mechanics of flying the kite are simple. The finesse is what I'm trying to improve. I've been flying in light, gusty wind. Already I feel a great change in my ability to control it, but I'm not there yet. I've been flying it into the wind and keeping it there without it folding up, and I've been able to set it down softly, again into the wind, where I can re-launch. I've been practicing keeping it overhead with one hand, (but I still have to watch it.) Where I want more control is in the power window,(which is about one second in either direction). I still am having trouble timing the pull so I know when to lean back, (this little sucker PULLS for a second), and I want to be able to keep it a steady ten feet off the ground as it goes across, still over compensating. I don't know if these are the proper drills, any input would be appreciated.
kjl
You can check out these drills - these are basically what I did: http://www.boardsportsschool.com/faqs.htm IMO, (and bear in mind I just learned, so take it with a grain of salt), you're probably fine to take your lessons already. I have a hard time keeping the training kite in one spot with one hand without looking at it, but it is easy with the real kite because you can feel the pull of the lines. Also, just like it is really hard to balance on a bike or snowboard if you're moving slowly or stationary, it it hard to time the pull against the kite in the power window just right if you're standing on the beach, but if you're trucking around on the water on a board and the kite power is changing slightly it is no problem to quickly and easily adjust the board. I wouldn't worry about swinging the thing across the entire wind window ten feet off the ground, either - usually when you are just riding around, you just have the kite parked at one side of the window and you're not moving it around at all, and you make your small power adjustments by sheeting in and out slightly, not really by doing power strokes or anything (unless the wind is really light). The only time I swing the kite back through the center of the wind window is to do a quick carved transition or something, but that's many days of riding away for you, and you will probably already have subconscious control of the real kite by then anyways. You should totally go for it. You're right - the left and right steering is simple - the sheeting in and out part of a real kite makes the power response significantly different (and easier to control). Also, I found the trainer kite gave me one bad habit that I found a little hard to get rid of (when it was dying because the wind lulled, I would refill the canopy by yanking on the bar really hard and jerking the kite towards me, whereas when the real kite is dying you want to do the opposite). willywhit
since my thread has gone from a video game to kitesurfing to exotic cars, here's a couple Gilmour sent me of a killer Bugatti Veyron, pretty sure he captured these in Aspen. SEJ
Damn Willy, wish I had your money. Nicest thing I ever rode in was a Pantera. Drove a 308, but I think the Pantera was way meaner. Badd ass 351 rumbling away in the rear. I mean, how many badd ass Italian cars can you buy tune up parts for at Pep Boys ?

SEJ
Yea, my buddy bought it. Owned it two years. Four grand in maintanence, (or little things that had to get fixed like valve cover gaskets=2K). He didn't realize that buying it just got you in the game, it didn't pay for the game. Fun car, not as fast top end like some of the others, but a lot of fun. Major understeer under power. Got on it heading up to Raleys from my house, (sweeping uphill right hand turn), and when I got out of it abruptly I almost hit the sidewalk. It was a sweet car, but a money pit. The Pantera was owned by his ex wifes boyfriend. A lot of money put in this thing. 450 HP without the N2O (had a 200 hp N20 kit). Took a lot of money to build a 351 to take 650 HP back then. This guy, money was no object. Bankrupt or filthy rich, (he went through cycles), spending money meant nothing to him. I mean were talking about a car built in 72, and this was over twenty years ago, but this thing ROCKED. I think it was a little over 2K wet, with 450 HP. It went over 60 in first gear. He had trouble getting it off the line without smoking or chirping the tires. 140 felt like 65. Coolest ride I've ever been in. Another cool car I rode in was a 69 427 Camaro that my wifes ex had. He sold his dragster, bought this thing, and built a monster engine for it. Had 180 HP N20 kit on it. 390 rear end. Still smoke the tires in every gear. At over 90 in third he would hit the N20 and the tires would start smoking again. Absolute monster car, and a total sleeper. Always thought one day I would have MY hot rod, but I think those days have passed. Maybe it will end up being a hot kite!

SEJ
kjl, ever do the Rio Vista thing? Im ready to take some lessons and I hear there's some good schools up there. Not that far from Benicia and the water should be warmer. The guy I got the trainer from teaches at Bodega. $100 for two hours. I just don't own a thick enough wetsuit for up there. Thanks for the turn on Willy, I'll keep ya all posted. Scott
kjl
Heh, funny enough I rode Sherman Island (Rio Vista) for the first time on Saturday. Amazing spot, but the launch is kind of sketch. Consistent wind, and super smooth water behind the two mini-islands. Entering the smooth water felt like the first time you hit bottomless powder on a board, and you realized you didn't know what smooth felt like until just then. Awesome! I hear kitopia.biz at Sherman is the best school in the bay area, so you should totally go for it. I had a 4/3 wetsuit and was overheating badly (not so bad while riding, because I just needed to keep the suit damp), but even with the top unzipped and pulled down to my waist I was burning up while rigging up and packing up at the end of the day.
