Time to get with the new? (buyin boards question)

Hey all. New to this board. Really stoked to see theres a good community goin here with the carving thing.

Ive been ridin a hard setup off and on since 96 when I spent a season in Steamboat Springs and someone traded me a PJ7 for my K2 HC176. I believe the PJ was a "special edition" of some sort...gold top, black base? rode that with standard burton plates that entire season. Never seen myself in action but at times I feel like Im really rockin it!

Last season I picked up a Killer Loop GS180 and some Burton step-ins. Put that together and rode it at mammoth a couple weeks ago, and had a hard time at first (maybe cuz I was used to the Asym?) but then once I got it...WOW. Scary precision and speed.

Anyway...after finding this site and finding out about COILER boards, my lust has been inspired.

my question is this:

should I opt for a new setup? I _have_ the money, but logic tells me not to spend it as the PJ has always been a fun ride and still has many runs left in it, and this Killer Loop board is practically new, so spending the money isnt a necessity.

but those boards look so SLICK!

Also considering a boot switch. I have Burton "earth" boots from a while ago..maybe 98? not sure exactly. They seem to work alright but they hurt my feet a bit. This was alleviated by pulling out the footbed (damn thing feels like PLASTIC!) but theyre still a tad uncomfortable.

Is UPS still a good boot? Raichle seems to be the standard, too.

anyway...I've got tons of questions about lots of other stuff. Heh..Ive only ridden with someone else on a hard setup a handful of times. Im always the loner on the hill! Even when I was in steamboat...never really saw anybody else except my Aussie housemate Daniel, and this girl that was visiting from backeast. that was IT!

ok ok...any input would be greatly appreciated!

D-sub, welcome to the board. This by far the #1 site for hardboot riders(sometimes softbooters visit here to, just don't make any coments about how softies can carve as well as (?)hardies). On to my reply, yes , Coiler does make some awesome looking boards and according to everyone that buys one they ride as well as they look. Personally, I haven't ridden a coiler but do own a Prior 4WD in a 179 and I love that board and if you talk to the Donek owners they all seem to love their boards too.

Being that you live in SoCal there are quite a few of us here that meet up at Snow Summit and ride but after the temps here today(3/7) who knows how long that snow will last. If you do go locally in the future shoot me an email either I will meet you up thhere and you can ride my Prior or you can borrow it from me for a day, the 4WD is similar to the Coiler All Mountain.

A month ago, I was in the same situation. I was happy carving on a Donek Incline for the past two seasons. But I was curious about getting another carve specific board. Before the Donek, my carving board was a Burton Alp 157. Even though the Incline is Donek's freeride model, it carved alot better than the Alp.

In early Feb, I emailed Sean at Donek about getting a mail order demo of an Axis or Freecarve 2. Unfortunately, Sean was getting ready for SES and could not send any demos until the first week of March.

Well, I couldn't wait until March, so I bought an Oxygen Proton GS 164 on EBay. I figured if I didn't like the board, I'd just re-sell it on Ebay and demo the Donek boards in March. Well the Proton has been great, so I'll be keeping it and won't be asking Sean for the demos.

So my suggestion is for you to contact Sean and get a demo of the Donek boards you're interested in. The Axis would be similar to the Pror 4WD and the Coiler AM. Then you could meet up with me, Oldvolvosrule and any other SoCal hardbooters and try out different boards.

The long range forecast is calling for some unsettled weather after 3-13/14. Hopefully that means colder temps and more snow.

sweet. thanks for the replies, fellas.

thing is...Im just over 6'2" and weigh 210 or so. Thinkin of a big board, too...

175 is the shortest Ill go.

there're some oxygen boards on ebay right now...goin pretty cheap.

BUT...an underlying question:

should I even bother? The Killer Loop 180 seems to ride pretty nice, and I never complained about the PJ either until I found this site and the links to Donek and Coiler (will check out Prior, too!)

is asym really "old news" now?

oh..and...oldvolvos...I dont mind goin up when its hot and slushy. Ill just take my little santa cruz 161 freeride board and spend some time in the air! I wont be makin any claims about soft boot carving tho cuz its never worked well for me:)

as for the demo stuff...well ****! Donek demos boards? Does Coiler? that would be SICK!

and...thank you MUCH for the offer of trying your prior out, but it seems like it would be a hassle unless we had the exact same boot size, ya know?

anyway...stick with what I have or get current?.

D- Sub-- Sounds like you are a electrical connector dude with your moniker. Anyway we are about the same size BTW. Oxy boards are nice and well constructed but usually have a larger side cut radius (F2s. also) then most others. It is a personal thing too but you might check the specs on your 180 for a partial comparison. Couple of ideas for you think about - Chris Prior is a good board supplier also and a super good guy -( so are Bruce at Coiler and Sean at Donek) .. Prior has a sweet riding 175 WCR and if you check out their web site they have a few cheaper demo boards but in great shape available. The prices are in Canadian $ so you do the math. I ride their 174 4X4 and hope to add a 181 WCR soon to my collection. The Volkl 178 RT is a real sweet ride for guys our size, I ride mine most of the time except when the fresh stuff is there and then the Coiler AM177 or the Prior 4X4 gets the nod. Raichle AF600 - Susuka new name- is a great boot if you get a Thermo Flex liner. I see them often on Ebay and on the German Ebay site or you can get them new from Bomber or Blue-Tomato. But if I were you I'd get a set of Trench Digger stepins first and boots second then get a bunch of boards. One can not have too many boards or auomobiles- it is just not possible.:D

get Bruce to build you a board since you have some short decks get a big honkin beast for those days with killer snow that will allow you to really push your self I have a pure race custom190that is simply the best board I have ever owned it was gonna be the board that I would take out when it was time to get crazy but its such a great board its actually what I ride every day now

the bottom line is if you have the money get a new stick its great to have some choice

boots the earths are pretty gushy boots try something racier really helps for the heelside turns I would say UPS would be a good choice but the Deeluxe stuff rocks too as does Head

as for the asym they are dated to say the least but if its fun that what counts

what season were you at the 'boat?

I believe it was...94/95? or 95/96, and then the following season I was at Crested Butte

hated that place. too many hippies, and more unfriendly people than Ive ever run across in one place.

steamboat ROCKED tho. women, good snow, tons of good friends made

never shoulda left actually:)

I hear ya on buyin the new board...frugality makes me ask these questions tho.

I was actually thinkin about goin to an all hard setup and gettin me one big carver and one pretty big all mountain board. somethin thatll still work in the soft stuff and trees...

my feet hurt too much with the soft boots:)

thanks C5 for your input! youre in seattle area, no? Ever ride Crystal? Any good?

D-sub I just started riding again this season, I still ride my hot 163 asym but have picked up an Oxygen 156 off of ebay for 40.00 + 20.00 shipping and even being a bigger guy the Oxygen can carve big as well as small and holds an edge with the best of em. At the price the oxygens on ebay are going for they are a steal assuming they all have similar riding characteristics as the 156. Very damp no chatter even on super hard ice. If your looking for a bigger board one of em is a 178 still in plastic. for buy it now 179.00

the whole state is full of them and I am not a fan of those types and the whole psudo treehugger mentality when in reality all they care about is where the good couch surfing is and where the next bong rip is gonna come from

but the those patchuli girls will give it up very easily if ya dont mind the hair!
