skategoat
Looking to head to SLC in mid-January for the annual boy's trip. I've never been there before and my mind reels at the sheer number of resorts in the area. We're looking for 4 days at a big mountain with plenty of variety. The boys are a real mixed bag - weak intermediate to expert, both boarders and skiers. I personally want to find lots of open bowls and powder. I love it above the treeline. Any recommendations? Park City seems to be the go-to destination but I hear great things about Snowbasin. Do any of the resorts groom?
AaronG
Skategoat, check out the Wasatch Trenchin Convention over at www.hardbooter.com. The ladies from Bomber will have their demo fleet there, bindings and boards. I am heading up there, look for the guy on a Prior 4WD 179, I love that board!! it's the one in my avatar. A great time is to be expected. I know that they are trying to nail down a day or two at Snow Basin and Snowbird, most of the Trenchin action took place at Park City last year. Kirk
Old Volvos nailed it! WTC! Plenty of good-size resorts: PC, Canyons, Bird, Snowbasin - all good choices. For powder stashes, I'll still put a recommendation in for Powder Mt. Do any of the resorts groom? Uh...all of 'em. But not sure if that was your real question there?? When I go out West, it seems to vary from none at all to 50%, whereas out East, it's 100% groomed. I'd love to hit WTC but I doubt my skiing buddies will want to spend 5 days with a bunch of smelly snowboarders. Any lodging recommendations at Park City? We usually lean towards private condo rentals.

We usually lean towards private condo rentals. Can't think of ANY that have NO grooming. Many of the resorts will have a grooming report on their website - check 'em out as the dates get closer. It's really best to try to hook up with someone that is familiar with the hill. Some resorts will groom one time and some will roll out certain trails 2nd shift. Don't worry, there are plenty of places to carve with more than enough vert. for you Eastern Canucks ;) Around here you can split your day between carving the groom and searching for freshies in one area. Hey, come to WTC and hang with other 'smelly snowboarders' ! You could always send your ski buds to hang with the yups at Deer Valley Hell, based on my observations there are plenty of 'fresh smelling' skiiers at PC - I think Apres-ski starts around 1:30 or so  I'll let the PC people comment on lodging specifics, but in general you're going to pay more than you would in SLC. If $$ is no object, check out some of the slopeside accomodations at the Canyons - those look reeeally nice. Skully might have a bit more info/experience on that situation. tilledog
Lodging will be strategic for this year's WTC. To accomodate our schedules and the women from Bomber, we had to choose the 25th-28th for this years' WTC. The event occurs during the tail end of the Sundance Film Fest and so PC lodging will be scarce and expensive if you wait too long. Possibly PM Skully for The Canyons accomodations which is really close to the PC area. I'm not sure how full the Canyons are during Sundance. Salt Lake City is a great option, in my opinion. It's central to all the resorts we plan to hit and the night life downtown is really gotten to be, well, almost GREAT considering the relative conservative nature of Utah. Make your reservations early though if you plan to come out and there shouldn't be issues. I'm trying to get together package deals at the downtown Marriot as we speak that would include lodging, transportion to and from the resorts, lift tickets and demo fees to make it simple for non-locals. Mike has a mass email engine in the works and I'll post on our site as well as here when it's available for sign up. The usual WTC page is being reset as we speak also so stay tuned. Possibly PM Skully for The Canyons accomodations which is really close to the PC area. I'm not sure how full the Canyons are during Sundance. Salt Lake City is a great option, in my opinion. As far as I know, The Canyons lodging is just like the rest of Park City during the film festival - scarce and expensive. Like Tille says, book early. If you stay in SLC, I'm sure there will be a few people who live in the valley driving to the WTC resorts, so transportation shouldn't be an issue. The good thing about having the WTC during the film fest is that the slopes are usually basically EMPTY during the festival. Sure you'll see a "Star" in their Bogner 1-piece that they user for 1 day and donate to charity, along with their entourage here and there, but they're easy to run down..... (Holy crap, how's that for a run-on sentance?)
Tim Kienitz
RE: Boarding at Deer Valley. I've always wanted to try taking my alpine setup to a Snowboard banning resort and telling them it's a mono ski. I think there's a good chance they would believe me. Bordy
Ridden DV on a Sqwal got away with it. Showed up with a 16cm wide alpine stick hoping to pull it off again. I was asked to leave and told snowboards were not welcome....
