I'm on tap to be hooked up, but instead of picking up a DSL modem from Qwest @ $60, I thought I might buy one on Ebay. 3 Questions: 1. Is a DSL modem specific to a carrier (i.e. Qwest, verizon, etc.)? 2. Is any particular type preferable to another? 3. Anything else a newbie should watch out for? Thanks. Derf Posted June 17, 2006 Report Share Posted June 17, 2006 It depends on the standards that the modem supports and that the provider uses. I think the most common are G.DMT (G.992.1) and G.LITE (G.992.2) or something like that. I am not very familiar with those, but when I googled when I got mine, it's what a checked for. I was lucky to get an Alcatel Speedtouch ethernet DSL modem which the company I work for threw away and I picked up. But one thing is shure, get an ethernet DSL modem, NOT a USB DSL modem, these are crap and not linux or other non-Windows OS compatible.
