  1. HAM huh, why not just get aviation radios, i hear no one is ever on 121.5!

I saw some Cobra radios on sale recently (about $70 for a pair) that claimed a 12-mile range. (WTF? 12 miles???) If that's not bogus, they must be GMRS!

they must have tested them on a real cloudy day with one on top of a mountain and the other in the valley.

  2. yes, the channels above 14 are no longer FRS frequency and utilize higher power, it is called GMRS (general moblie radio service) Infact, you are suppossed to have a licence to use them. (its a mail order licence) the reason being that anything above 2 watts of power require a FCC licence. GMRS can use up to 5 watts while FRS are limited to 500 milliwatts.

here is the FCC info on the whole thing:

    http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/personal/generalmobile/

PS i'm not a geek just a former electrical engineering student. whoops same thing. ok a geek

  3. they didnt have the 1.8t GLI when I got mine so I had to settle for the Plat Grey 1.8t GLS. Love the car though handling accecleration and gas mileage all in one package

your car doesn;t perform any better or worse than mine either, so i dont think you had to settle at all. put a rieger body kit on that and drop it with some 30mm springs and you got a sick looking car that beats the hell out of my stocky anyday.:biggthump

  4. Doesn't the GLI have a VR6 (or maybe it's the old model which does...)?

Yes, normally the MKIV GLi has a VR6. but the GLi Gtanner and I have is the last of the MKIV, a special edition which came with a 1.8T and a bunch of other goddies like recaro seats and a body kit.

I've got a lovely "Blue Lagoon" GLI in my driveway...

I took off the front skirt for the winter and also added steel wheels and winter tires...the car now looks like a BEAST!

Great car though. The turbo is awesome and it's a fact, the summer tires/wheels look awesome!!

If I end up moving to the mountains I'm going to need to trade in for a torreg or something cause i molded my bumpers to the valence and they aren't coming off, i'm not going to torrture my car with mountain driving.

  5. Just curious - does anyone know why performance street tires are getting lower and lower in profile, but race tires are nowhere near the same? Look at an F1 car, it's a pretty small radius rim and a lot of sidewall. Now they're selling Corvettes with 30 or 35 series tires. What gives with the different approach to performance?

low profile tires do not perform better, in fact they have their share of problems: eg. flats, more likley to blow out when hit hard, and requires large rim which inceases weight. (larger tire more air, air weighs less than aluminum.) that being said, the reason these "sports cars" all come with little tires is because large wheels with little tires looks damn good.

in fact a friend of mine has the same car i do except i have 18 wheels and he is a good 3/10 of a second fast than me just because he has 16s.

  6. The thing is like 1/2" thick? How much lower profile are you looking for? Maybe I'm confused.

let me clairify, my tires now are only about two or three inches thick.

    100_0374.jpg

rubber bands if you will. this "tire" is actually about six inches thick mounted on what looks like a 15 or 14 inch rim. so, since the ribing is needed to make the tire springy, i wonder if they will have a version which can fit larger rims like in the picture, with less material between the band around rim and the outter band which contacts the ground.

i say this becuase i like the way large rims look, but hate how easy it is for low profile tires to get damaged.

    these would solve the problem.

  7. Carve 4,

Are you solely interested in carving? Or do you also like to ride powder and trees? If you're only carving, pick up a grooming report--the groomers do a very good job and you'll be able to find the type of pitch and terrain to get you pumped.

My personal favorites for carving: Avanti (Chair 2), Bwana/Simba (Gondola), Ouzo and Dealer's Choice (Chair 7), Hunky Dory (Chair 3), Northwoods (Chair 11), Riva Ridge (when it's freshly groomed). Chopstix and Poppyfields are great, wide-open caring fields in the Back Bowls. Jade Glade and Blue Ox are black-diamond steep, and awesome when freshly groomed (Blue Ox is double black and groomed each Friday--get there in the early am for unforgettable first trax).

Not gonna get involved trying to defend Vail from its detractors. I ride there because it's simply the best I've found for what I like to do. It's huge and always offers opportunities for exploration and adventure. It can be pricey but it ain't just the fur set that rides there. On any given day there are more than a few carvers on the slopes.

Give a shout when you're in town and I'd be happy to hook you up with a highlighted trail map to help you find the goods.

    Cheers,

    B-2

Thanks B2 i might just take you up on that. and to answer your question, i like pow and trees its just that i'm a poor college kid right now in search of a new pow board( looking for a nice Pure carve NoRoy or maybe a nidecker if any one wants to sell one cheap) and i dont have the money for a brand new one this season, so i'm left with my three caving boards. so that will be primarally(sp?) what i will be doing in colorado this year. i live in florida for the time being and its hard to justfy spending my only 1000 bucks on snowboard gear, i can only use maybe ten days out of the season. but that will all change soon!!!

thanks for the tips everyone this is real helpful!!

  8. Is bigger better? Not IMO. There's lines for everything at Vail, including the can ... even the back bowls have lift lines. I feel like I'm in a cattle drive walking from the parking garage to the lifts (and all the cattle have on expensive new one-piece suits with the plastic tags still sticking out). How you look is very important there, so sign up for lots of $500/day lessons.

But if you're going to do any riding around that area, check out the Colorado Pass online. $369 for unlimited Breck, A Basin and Keystone with 10 days at Vail/Beav good for the whole season.

    Breck's a cluster***k too but at least there's a place to park.

lessons, what like, finishing school??:eplus2: just kidding. i wonder if they even have anyone up there who does alpine lessons. maybe one or two guys huh?

  9. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but ever since last year, they turned that awesome run into a terrain park!! :angryfire:mad::nono::boxing_sm

The choice runs off of Rainbow now are Rosa Mae and Lottie Johl. Doh!

very true, however, you can still hit it up in the begining of the year before there is enough snow to make a park. that is true of the last two years anyhow. but i'm not sure if this year they put in dirt jumps to screw it up sooner. anyone know?

edit. out of curiosity I checked your "myspace" page

    gotta love this:

"I live in Daytona Beach and pretend to go to school, fooling only the bank into give me loans which i never intend on paying back"

nice, dude. stickin it to "the man" eh?

lol, yeah exactly, that was a joke like a year ago, i should probably change that someday.

but seriously, hopefully in the next 6 month i'll get hired to denver center, where i can live out the rest of my life in the mountains. well on a plain next to them anyway. :eplus2:

  10. there is no "mountain of choice" there, bro! there are 10 or so world class ski areas

sure, certain ones feature more steeps, better grooming, etc...

but...hell...if youre IN vail, youre not gonna be bummed riding Vail and or Beaver Creek.

ok man, im sorry but maybe you dont understand the question. so let me clear it up: the whole point of the thread is to get some suggestions from people about their favorite runs at their favorite mountains. perhaps the question isn't clear. either way i'm well aware of the "quality" of all the resorts, otherwise i wouldn't be going there.

if someone ask me about my favorite area in the mammoth area, i would reply, At june mountain i really enjoy gunsmoke because its hilly and has good grooming. understand the question now D-sub?

thanks for all the feedback everyone:biggthump

  11. I dont expect ANY shop these days to "know" alpine gear

in fact...if he "knew" his gear the shop would have wanted $250 or more for those boots, so the fact that they didnt KNOW (or perhaps did and just wanted them out of there) worked very much in your favor :)

heck yes it work out in my favor, thats my point one persons ignorence is anothers gain. (not to call the guy ignorant, i mean his ignorance to alpine gear)

    ;) :D

  12. and calling him an idiot...well...I hope youre not that disrespectful in person.

wave rave is a shop that has been around for a LONG time, definitely carried alpine gear (as did stormriders) not some trendy freestyle shop

of course not. but hey know your gear. i dont ride soft stuff but i know it well enough.

the burton boots would be the best thing going, overall they were a super solid boot.

if they had a better liner, more travel in the forward flex before the spring bottomed out and a better implementation of the idea behind the little plastic tabs that were supposed to make be able to adjust the side flex they would be my boot of choice.

you can switch out the liners for the thermo flex liner sold on this site and you will see a termendous improvement over the old. as for the flex adustments, eh, your right.
