  1. Amazing how off topic this got.
  2. lol, Confusing, All snowboarding is alpine snowboarding, I have never seen anyone cross country snowboard... Way to much overlap in the language. And yes, I can carve on my Donek Wide with soft boots. Deep trench, laid out carving. Although my hardboots on this board are much more comfortable for this type of riding.
  3. Wow, now I'm a little impressed. "Half pipe in hardboots" Great Pic, got any more. When people ask me about carving, and what kind of equipment they need for carving. I do not recommed they try laying out turns with their current short, flexible, small sidecut, park board. They will either end up hurting themselves or their equipment. So if what they are doing in the pipe and terrain park. And what instructors are calling carving is different than what I am thinking carving is.... So yes, I am a little (lot) confussed. What is the kind of riding called that we do on this board. I have always referred what I do as "carving".
  4. Wow, if that's the normal type of riding for the word carving, I am really surprised the we use that word on this board. Hmm. I wonder what looks I would get if I carved (my use of the word) between and coming up the face of the jumps in the terrain park? Were doing the same thing write? I do plenty of riding, when I am carving, I am leaving trenches... If I am calling what I am doing the wrong thing, please let me know.
  5. OK, post the video and prove me wrong. I have no problem eating my words...
  6. No, I do not ride the Half Pipe. Although I do watch both BoarderX and Half Pipe events on tv. Great HD coverage this year. No, I do not consider what they are doing in the pipe carving. On occasion, they will appear to carve a turn in boarderX. I also do not consider turning and carving the same thing. Really didn't mean to offend anyone. With that said, I will stop replying to this post.
  7. I disagree, carving implies inclination. Otherwise skidding down the hill is carving with just very little inclination... Strait lining a hill is carving with strait radius turns... As far as I can tell, they are near strait lining it, with very little inclination, in the pipe. I would also have to say the same thing for Boardercross, at least all of the ones I have taped recently. If you are not leaving lines (preferably trenches), your not carving. Again this is just my opinion.
  8. Finding a board that can both carve and ride in a pipe will be very difficult at best. I have very little to "no" interest to ride in a park or pipe so I cannot help you there. And, although you can carve on a very stiff soft setup, it is not quite as nice as carving on equipment made to this. It is much nicer carving in hard boots than soft, their is much more support. All that being said, a lot of boards cross over from on type of terrain to another. ie. carve and freeride. or park and freeride. I don't think you will find a board for carve and park... You really need to determine where you would like to spend your time, or bring a quiver of boards to the mountain.
  9. I think the incline would work out great. Not really a board for the pipe though. You can also have the stiffness adjusted slightly to match your weight and riding style, this is not really an off the shelf type of board.
  10. You really need to determine how you ride, or would like to ride, snow conditions you would see at your local hills, and how much time you spend in the park/pipe compared to groomed runs. As far as getting a board that will perform for your size, you may want to look at http://www.donek.com He should be able to get you into a board that would work great for you.
  11. Given the time of year, anything resembling froze water will work. Before long the hill will be green. Other than that perfect groom of course
  12. I will be out there this morning. PK
  13. OK, I pushed it back, I will be out there next weekend. I live in Sterling Heights, Detroit Suberb. So what happend to you last weekend Pat?
  14. Is anyone planning on going up on Saturday, 17th.

I was up at Boyne Highlands today. Conditions were better than I had expected. The day started icy, softend throught the day, but still was not bad when I left the hill at 2. Debating on going up again next weekend.

Sunday 1pm, How did my lines look on the hill. lol Going back in forth with my wife on where to go, we may just end up at Boyne Highlands first thing Saturday morning. Probably spend the the morning on Amy's run.
  17. No, I have no intentions in turning hardbooters into softbooters. Although I do try to get everyone carving, no matter what the equipment.
  18. Definetely not the same thing. But neither is carving on Narrow Virus compared to the Sword (EC). I don't think it matters what style of board you ride. As long as the running length, effective edge, stiffness and side cut match your carving style. This all goes back to what angles feel correct to you. Myself I am riding 39(f) 33® in softies. I cannot go to much further with my Rear foot without requiring a hardboot. My front I can ride all the way up to 45(f) with no issues. All I can say is, if your carving trenches down the hill, People watch. If your skidding, you look like all the rest. I still get asked questions about my equipment all the time, from both hardboots and softies.
  19. I am currently riding a 169 Donek Wide with soft boots. I can't carve as good as I could on my Coiler, but still can definitely carve on it. It has a 10.2 side cut and a 5.5 on the Donek Scale for stiffness. Although Next season I think I will have a different board built. I am looking for a 11.2 side cut with about the same stiffness and a little longer edge, still riding soft boots.

I wish I lived close enough to do that. We left around noon. Any ideas for this weekend. It's going to be warm, I was thinking Blue Mountain. Temps are supposed to stay around freezing up there.

Wasn't no better today. I would blow out every time I would lay out a turn. Worst conditions I have seen all year.

I will be at Pine Knob tomorrow morning. I sold off my hard boot stuff a while ago. I will be riding a 169 Donek Wide and Catek Freeride's. Brian
  23. Yes, as long as you do not want to spend your whole day "trying", to EC. Still need to play with my angles a bit. I am actually going to lower them to 36/33, at the higher angles I did not even come close to booting out and I need to get more pressure on my edges. The ride does not hook up nearly as hard or as deep as with a narrow board, hard boots and Olympic bindings. With that said, you can do your normal push/pull turns and lay out a carve every now and then. I seem to lose too much speed trying to link laid out turns. Probably has to do more with the shorter sidecut (10.2) than the Freeride Pros. Would I recommend this setup to someone trying to learn to carve? No. Would I recommend this setup to someone who rides hardboots and wants a freeride setup? Definitely. You can transfer the style to this setup but the feeling is too different to learn the style with this setup. Well, we will see where it goes from here. Good Luck,
  24. I will be on a Donek 169wd with Freeride Pros. Angels at 42/36.
