  1. That Kirkwood has higher altitude is a common misconception. The top of Heavenly is just over 10,000' where Kwood tops out at 9,850'.

However, the fact that there are more carvers at Kwood is undeniably true.

The runs at Kwood also seem to be more carve friendly. The best carving run at Heavenly is Waterfall on the CA side off the Powder Bowl lift. Unfortunately, it is rarely groomed. I can't tell you how many "comment cards" I filled out asking for more grooming...

  2. Bryan, did you break one of the plastic disks that came with the really old F2s? I've always thought those were a bit suspect.

I had a set of 3hole disks machined out of Delrin. They seem pretty solid, but I would have preferred aluminum. They guy doing the machining was going to charge 2x as much for alu and assured me the delrin would be plenty strong. He did the job for $50. I'd be happy to pass on his info if you'd like.

Alternatively, email me if you want another set of the plastic disks. I'm willing to let mine go CHEAP!!! :-)

  3. The "Sonic" came in a 167 and a 174. Waist was about 19 and SCR was 13 and 14 (I think). I think the came in Yellow one year and Black in another. They used "F.I.R.E" dampening, but I can't remember what FIRE stood for.

If the price is right, it would be a good board. Just be careful they aren't older Mistrals which were nearly all asyms.

  4. What are you riding now?

I feel the BC split is too wide for hardboots at ~26cm. Also, the insert placement on the BC makes angles higher than ~40 degrees difficult (but not impossible with modifications).

The ATV is designed with hardboots in mind so angles up to 55 or so are achievable without modification. Also, the 23.5cm waist width is much more appropriate for plates.

That said, I have a solid Prior MFR (very similar shape to the BC splitboard) and it rides great with plates.

  5. I've not ridden the 171 AWD, but my feeling is that if you are comfortable with hardboots and plates in all conditions, and you plan to ride hardboots in the backcountry, the 171 AWD is the perfect board. If you are going to ride softies, the normal "Backcountry Splitboard" is the right choice.

My only gripe would be that the 171 would be long-ish for lighter riders in steep, hardpack terrain like spring mornings. I'd like to see Prior offer the 167 AWD shape in a split as well. However, hardboots + splitboards is combining two niches into one ultra-niche. There have got to be at least a *dozen* backcountry hardbooters worldwide that need something shorter than 171 right? That's a huge market segment... :-)

  6. I've got 2 Priors (162MFR and 174 4x4) and my wife has a Magestic. They are all great boards. Very durable all around in my experience. All the bases were dead flat on delivery and remain so after considerable use. The Prior folks are really easy to work with as well. When I'm ready to upgrade from my second hand Voile split, the 171 AWD split will be my next ride.

  7. No kidding. Actually, the girl said the same thing. Funniest part is that she asked for my opinion about board length before she bought it and I told her this would be too short, 154cm would be better for her.

She bought it because it was the "prettiest"...

  8. Hey Rob, I've got some of the really stiff "racing" tongues for the Lemans/SB series Raichles. They would be noticeably stiffer than the stock ones. If you happen to be a 28+, I'd be happy to lend them to you. If you have smaller feet, you might find someone else around here to lend you the stiff tongues.
