Wait till you have the opportunity to hit some deep powder. Where to board really shines--is in powder, whether you want to lay out some long arcs, in tight trees , and of course my favorite--bumps. Waist deep is not too deep for this board.
I will say it does not do well on hard surfaces.
Powder it's an almost unknown dream in Minnesota, but Redman tells me that Libby is going to be fabulous. If you have the time to hit Big Sky on the way to or fro let me know.

I have taught a few folks and the best way I've found is to put them in the same angles that they would slide down an icy sidewalk. That way they have an inherent understanding of how to stand with their feet locked in a board and a very neutral center of balance/gravity. Change later on when they have a better feel for a board.

I'm riding this at Big Sky. Works well in everything including waist deep, and great in untracked tree runs. My personal board is the 153 Nitro Squash shown here with hardboots, but it is a soft boot board. Is $519, and you can usually get a discount if you ask at EVO. I also purchased a couple off of ebay (came from Canada for $400). Dynamite board on everything except icy slopes.

We had about 1 foot overnight, with 4" the day before, over a pretty good base. Knee to thigh deep in newly opened glade. Excellent boarding on the un-groomed runs.
The problem: Only Swift Current open from the base area, (explorer doesn't count), and Powder Seeker closed for most of the day because of un-exploded ordinance. Challenger was open, wind blown and really poor visibility. High winds till early afternoon, and a chilled ride up Swifty.
Resort is going to suck till the new "Chubby Ram-Charger 8" opens. Shedhorn, which is home to the old Ram-Charger lift is not open or expected to be open for a long time, reportedly it will re-start the operations when Ram-Charger is completed.
My recommendation would be to skip it till they get the lifts running. Hopefully soon.

Never saw his rear foot in video. Front looked fairly steep. I stand corrected. Here's my set-up at 50 and 30.

This may be of no help, so I'm hoping it might be. Should check with some folk that have size 31 and see what the shell size actually is "Beuller?" Most boots have multiple sizes in the foot like 25.5 to 27 etc.. The other thing is you might have some luck with a thinner moldable liner. I'm an actual 9.5 shoe, but fit quite well in a 26.5 shell with the thinner thermaflex.

Because I wasn't having that much fun skiing. I was always crossing my tips in the bumps. (I'm a bit pigeon toed).
Then started doing bumps once again, and was hyper flexing my ankles when hitting the troughs too hard (3 strap Burton Bindings). At a ski swap in Seattle 1997, I saw an Asym Burton Alp and a pair of Raichle 123s with bindings for $125 and thought, "What have I got to lose? Never had seen a pair of hard boots before, but looked like the answer to my problems, and it was.
Found Bomber years later, after a snowboard rep told me to look there, because nobody was making Alpine anymore.

The only time I worry is when I'm forced to be on the groomers. Off piste is a little slice Shangri la, and is in little need of extra protective gear, although I do wear a helmet.

For future reference, sometimes taking a hammer and pounding down, will release the bond. Also try tightening it slightly, before you try to loosen, and that also works.

What I'd give for the pink pants. Goes to show that it's more the operator than the equipment--well at least in that kind of snow.

The most fun I have is the learning phase of any sport. The satisfying phase is when you're able to incorporate what you've learned. The exciting phase is when you say to hell with all your preconceived ideas and go for it and finding out it works, and even more so when you get out of the same old rut and do something that no one else is doing. That's how snowboarding got it's start. Glad to see the lightbulbs going off. Enjoy.

Steeps are just a matter of wrapping your mind around going a little airborne, short turns, and the right stuff. Big, stiff boards, and long GS turns are not de rigueur. Looks like fun.
Been of the opinion that shortest, lightest tool to do the task effectively is the best tool. YMMV

Nitro Squash. Soft or Hardboots. My son and I used this all last season. Works everywhere. This years models comes in more sizes. Last years price was $500.

One of my all time favorite bands. First heard them while boarding with a Tele, Soft Booter, Alpine Skier, and a Randonnee' at Jackson Hole. Like the band, it just clicked, with all different styles all meshing together.

I don't know what got into me this year (aside from a new board), but I didn't scrape either. Never seemed to matter. Figured the wax would just wear off anyway, and I'm only racing myself. This year I just started using a 12" drywall knife held vertically so it wouldn't flex to concave/convex. Seems to work out fine. The suck up from the bindings are always left untouched, so I'm guessing it's pretty darn flat. Using a cork in the binding spot.

There are (for me) 3 different disciplines at Big Sky. Hard days on piste, soft days on and off piste and pow days. I just skip the hard days so I figure it's like having a bow and a crossbow.
