  1. I have "snowboarders shoulder" - my rear arm (left arm for a goofy) is easily dislocatable if yanked back. It happened after quite a number of toe-side falls over about 20 years of sloppy riding. So now the shoulder can pop out if I reach high...or just sleep wrong.

As a result I've taken to carving with my elbows out and hands in toward the chest, rather than arms out or palms down in order to protect the shoulder in case of a crash. My arms seem so compact to the body and I'm wondering if it may be hindering my riding.

What do you guys do to protect the arms and still lay it out?...or is it a fear I need to get over?

I'm a goofy rider as well....and had the same shoulder dislocation issue as you years ago. To be honest....it is rather uncanny reading just how very similar our shoulder issues are. Back in 2000...I had the Bankart Shoulder Surgery (they put "grappling hooks" between the bones/muscles" as the Doc explained it to me) and I haven't had an issue since. BTW... I was in a sling for 6 months after the surgery...and than Physical Therapy for 6 months after that....

I would highly recommend getting the surgery if you can. My shoulder popped about a dozen times before I did....and I had to be taken to the hospital every time to have it "reset". Also...it would pop for me at the most mild activity. The one time I was going to sit down at the beach...and I had put my arms behind me to sit...and "snap" it just popped out. Arghhh! That was the very last time...and I went and had the surgery done 2 weeks later.

  2. I'm currently rocking a pair of Spyder pants that I bought last year in Germany for about $250. I love'em....super comfortable and super sharp....highly recommend.

Also...I just bought my 3 month old the Sypder bunting outtie (and hat and gloves) to get him ready for the season....however...he has a little growing to do!

  3. Seems to me the biggest difference between riding 15 years ago and riding today (been there done that)

Is the distance between feet, was 16 inches is now 21 inches, hasn't been mentioned, allows you to crouch lower and put your weight on either end of the board at will.

When you spread out increase your angles of front and rear foot lift.

Yup...concur w/that. I still ride the same stance that I did from the mid-90s....about ~15-16in distance for the bindings....

  4. I agree w/you there...however...don't feel too guilty about buying the pass...you need to ride somwhere.

At the end-of-the-day though....as we all know....Vail Resorts Inc. (NYSE:MTN) is a corporation like any other (IBM, Exxon, HP, Ford, etc...). There bottomline is unfortunately (for us)....profit....plain and simple.

Give me a "family-run" resort anyday...however...good luck finding one of those now-a-days. Oh how I miss my little resort in Liechenstein (Malbun).

  5. Wow....great thread....enjoyed the read....

BTW...I "google'd" Soelden...and come to find out that I was only a two hour drive away when I was riding at Malbun! Arrghhh....I guess I just have to get back to Europe soon and check it out!

  6. Absolutely concur w/Donek's comments about shipping. Also...those DHL 757 Cargo planes shipping all of our stuff from Europe really negates any benefit an "eco-friendly board" may possibly have....when it's all said and done.

Not to mention all the energy that goes into making the base materials (i.e. "titanal, rubber roil, etc...") like Donek mentioned....

  7. not to take anything away from those 'competitors' (which is awesome...I agree and wish to be riding at that age too)...BUT - - - "the General", Richard Spector, takes the cake! He does not 'compete', but Dick will be 87 this year!!! Many of you know him from the Aspen Sessions. He will be out there a couple times this season (2013). If you see him, say hi, congratulate him on his decision to finally 'retire' (slowly over the next 2-3 years) from his law practice in Chicago. RIDE ON Dick, you are an inspiration to us all!!

    Incredible stuff....keep riding hard guys!

  8. Glad to hear an update. Definitely need to meet up with some of the California BOL members. If you aren't blown away with their skills, generosity, and overall good vibe I will be very surprised. Check out the ride board and make some time to hang with some alpine folks. Did you end up buying any gear while in Germany?
Thank you for the warm welcome back....and looking forward to meeting up with some local riders.I never ended up getting any new gear in Germany....so when I get back to Cali I'll be in the market for a complete new set-up.
  9. Too late, credit already taken, year ago ;) You guys can send the licence fees my way :D

My BBP (BlueB Plate) works also as a conversion to monoski. I am pretty sure that any snowoard would work, as the pressure is at the right spots to match the designed flex pattern. Over and above, it alows the board to flex without any "hard spots" and absorbs bad terrain.

It is also possible to have 2 pairs of bindings on, for instant changes from snowboard to monoski and back :D

Dude....that is sic! love the set-up!

  10. We hit Malbun again this past weekend....23 inches of snow the nite before we got there. Check out the vid below.....more clowning than riding......but fun nonetheless.

Also....headed back to the States this weekend...I have some work stuff in Texas for a week and then headed to Springfield, Il to meet up with my fiancé. Quick question...are there any good shops in the St Louis/Springfield area to get my fiancé a decent ski set-up?

Also...and hardboard shops in the area? Thanks guys....

  11. Hopefully the shop has some options.

Buy the high end boots that FIT

Bomber TD3 SI would give you a flexier fit , yet burly.

I am sure the Virus bindings are more than adequate coming from vintage gear.

The boards will blow you away!!! Fact.

    Boots, get what fits.

Money is no object? Just by the best they have.

Thanks to everyone for all the inputs!

Gonna hit Malbun again this weekend after I get off work.....get a rental car on Friday and drive up starting at 3am on Saturday for a two-day session!

    I got the fiancé hooked on skiing....so it's a win-win for us!
