  1. I went back to mount petit yesterday before coming back to the city. great conditions again, I basically had the hill to myself: me, two senior citizen skiers and another washed-up hardboot racer doing nothing but gs turns on the little race hill. the place feels like soda springs or sugar bowl picked up and dropped 2,700 miles to the east.
  2. There is no reason for a snowboard course to be "perfectly groomed". You are confusing freecarving with racing. Both are wonderful undertakings in their own right but they are different. you're discussing what you, personally, would require to ride a dh course, not what trained snowboard racers would. downhill used to be my favorite event to compete in on my old 210 safari
  3. Any proficient alpine snowboarder should be able to finish any downhill course. It can be scary, but there is no logic contraindicating it. I competed in snowboard downhills in the 1980s, some successfully, many unsuccessfully, including kitz, wengen and iron mountain and two '80s us opens. anyone who attended US opens in the late '80s knows that snowboard downhills are a blast. the skillsets run counterintuitive to freecarving, though: flat board, mass remains over the deck, not inside/outside. snowboard downhills are a lot of fun.
  4. There is very little decent riding in southern NY or NJ. I ride Mount Petit only because of great grooming and snow quality despite the fact that its is very small. almost too small. Great pitch on their race hill and no lift lines on weekdays. I may take this week off to just ride there. It is cheap too.
  5. Many snowboard racers have run world cup downhill courses. Think Kitzbuel and Wengen for starters. I ran the Iron Mountain DH in Tahoe on my 210 Safari in the 1980s. Todays ski racers can and do run downhills on GS skis as a centering exercise. Modern ski stiffness allows for greater latitude in ski length and I believe we'll see some of this pouring over into snowboard design.
  6. I should have gone to "Mount Petit" instead of Mountain Creek yesterday. It was like "Jersey Shore" with snow and I felt out of place without Ed Hardy gear and hair gel. Ericj the hardbooters at Mount Petit both appeared to be 35-45 with sloppy blond hair. They were both hiking the little slalom course so I did not get to talk with them. Let me know when you will be there. I may be interested in going to eces and have plenty of room in my cross country.
  7. Bola is correct, and the stiffer flex is the race stock version that comes with the Red Bull graphic. Remember that race-stock boards often come in any available graphic for promotional purposes. My 185 is a '10-11 model, and I've ridden both versions of this series at St. Anton earlier this season. I will never understand the need for internet arguments. Me, I ride the things.
  8. I am off to try Mountain Creek. Mount Peter was amazing yesterday with several great hardbooters hitting gates but I want to try Mountain Creek this season. Anyone not going to Belleayre I will look for you at "MC". I'm in the brown Mammut parka & tan pinstipe pants on the SG FRPT.
  9. Go to mount peter instead. you guys were ripping it up there today!
  10. I said they are different, based upon my conversations with Herr Grabner and my demo rides with his tech rep at St. Anton, and my eventual purchase of the race stocker after many runs on both. The difference is honestly dramatic.
  11. I'm "still wrong"? how many SGs have you ridden ro do you own? You are welcome to ride mine anytime. I demoed both of these boards at st. Anton with the tech rep. I guess you know more than him because you saw a youtube vid. Thank you for enlightening me. imagine my gratitude.
  12. I rode at Mt. Peter today and there were several hardbooters there. Two were hitting gates all day, I am guessing that was carvingbassist and erikj. Nice turns guys! I was the guy on the SG in the brown parka.
  13. I didn't google there boards, I rode them;) ... with a tech rep. Night and day different ride, and the race model weighs more.
  14. The Jr. racer was understandably mistaken. Try riding each, or weighing each. I demoed each and purchased one based upon my demo rides. the SG technician with whom I spoke and rode definitely knew the product. They are marvelous snowboards
  15. You may want to recheck that. The construction is the same, but the amount of titanal is different between the two. This is why they have 2 separate models. Just weigh the two boards, I've ridden them both, and they're vastly different in flex and snap.
  16. what happened? I was there from 9-2 and was the sole hardbooter as far as I could tell. I had the entire black diamond to myself all day....with a couple skiers. I may ride there all weekend.
  17. Can you get to Mt. Peter, then? I was there today and was the sole hardbooter. I'm staying in Washingtonville for the weekend
  18. Sigi was commenting on the boards' shapes, not their overall construction. Shapes are identical, materials are the same, but the thickness of the titanal laminate is different between the two. Weigh each board;)
  19. I am off to try Mount Peter and to meet the local hardbooters Eric and Mike maybe.
  20. No, it isn't. The difference is in extra titanal laminates. When you put the two side by side the difference is notable. identical shape though.
  21. I rode there a few times this season. verdict: not so much.
  22. I know this place, it's tiny but Its got great snow and some serious scholastic ski racing. Are there really only two hardbooters riding there? Will you be there tomorrow (Friday)?
  23. Me for some of that action! Belleayre isn't too far for me. It would be nice to find more NY hardbooters to ride with.
