  1. Looking good! If that is you on the motorcycle in the avatar, I'm sure you know about riding an edge! In the video you looked relaxed, happy, and in control! All good things! :D

Your turn shape looks good and over time you'll find as your confidence grows you'll not only lay it over more, you'll also be able to vary your turn shape and deal with the rebound from the board.

One thing I feel is common to most beginners is getting the stance aligned. Make sure you keep your knees, hips, and shoulders over your feet. Keep driving your back hip forward especially on the heel side. Drop into the turn my driving your front hip down to the snow on the heel side instead of making a move like sitting in a chair. Much easier to demonstrate than explain!

See if you can hook up with any off the locals there... It will help a ton to ride with others!

About me... I am a 41 year old single mom living in western Montana. My boyfriend, also a member on here, is from the Portland area and know Bryan well. I haven't met him in person yet, but he does sound like a great guy! In fact, my board of choice right now also came from his collection! Thanks again, Bryan!

I first got on a snowboard in 1985. Started teaching skiing and later snowboarding in 1990 when I was in college and aside from two seasons off from teaching (baby related!), I have been teaching ever since.... Now, I mostly teach skiing and I'll be dragging my but out of bed here soon and heading out to the mountain!

One for bit of advice... Have you ever thought about getting a helmet? :ices_ange

Anyway, hope you get time for more days on the hill soon, looks like you are hooked!

  2. 34.... and work? I work from midnight to 8am at a tv station thus alowing the daytime hours for fun things! Sleep? who needs sleep??? (but ask me that again come mid season when I'm about to drop from trying to do too much!!!) I'll probably be teaching 2 or 3 days a week again this year. (How much tortue can my body take???)

Yikes! Who brought this thread back? Funny looking back on a post from so long ago... Can I change my vote in the poll? I'm up a category now! One thing that hasn't changed... Still not getting enough sleep! One thing that has... Only teaching one day a week in addition to my full time job.. Oh, and the job has changed too!

  3. I have met a few bomber folks who actually collect gear with the intention of sharing with newbies.... I applaud your efforts! Was riding with one of those guys last week.... A conversation on the chair....

Me: where did she get the boots from? (Talking about a gal who works in the coffee shop in the lodge who got on an alpine setup for the first time the prior afternoon)

Him: I have a bunch of stuff in my van to loan to anyone who wants to try....

Me: very cool... Wish I could do something like that, but I'm pretty broke...

Him: yeah, someone asked me why I never get gear for myself... This year I finally did! :D

Awesome.... New respect for those who put others before themselves.....

I won't mention names.... I know that is not the reason you do what you do, but THANKS!

Edit... And oh yeah, I know there were at least two others he got setup during the 4 days I was there!

  4. What I can say is what is CASI thinking with the freestyle portion of a level three. To me it's like putting an age cap on their instructors. I'm more than fine with a freestyle endorsement but this is silly.

At 41 years old with 20+ years of ski and snowboard instruction under my belt, I have gone back to teaching almost exclusively ski lessons. I am so fed up with AASI and there lack of interest in my generation. I have no desire to jib and bonk and slide rails. Yes, I can ride switch, but see no reason to do so. I remember back in the day when snowboarding was still under PSIA. A lot of the top instructors came from a skiing background and hard boots were the norm with many instructors. Why was AASI formed? Because too many snowboarders didn't like being forced into a mold to ride a certain way. Guess what? Exactly as AASI is doing now... If you don't ride this certain way, we don't want you in our group! Ugh...

And today I had 4 1/2 hours of fun lesson with skiers! The kids were great! Keeps me young!

(Ok, thank you for your time, I will get off my soapbox now! I will ride hard boots when I can and leave the soft boot setup in the locker room just in case...)

  5. Ok folks NICE starts on Monday so who is ready to carve up the schwizz like a hot turkey in a jail cell.

    Me...ME... ME

well, uh.... a turkey in a jail cell? hmmm.... you guys getting some snow? PLEASE just pack it down for me...... can I just go without any powder days? I'm not whining or asking for too much, am I?

  6. We are going to be at HoJo check in Sunday night and check out on Thursday (I have to work Friday so we'll be leaving at the end of the day on Thursday). Got the room from Priceline.com for $38 a night. Got a deal at Liftopia.com on 2 day lift tickets.

"I just got Schweitzer Mountain 2 Day Lift Tickets for $106.00 (22% off) on Liftopia for Monday, January 14th. Join me?"

Any other ladies going to be riding? I have an extra pair of boots in mondo 24.5 and certainly an extra board if anyone needs gear to try!

  7. I'm guessing the green Donnek Axxess is his now.... It's ok though, I know he'll let me borrow it if I want... Good thing I didn't sit near a window today at work... Even so this Friday seemed to take forever! I hope you all stayed nice and toasty warm!

  8. Found this old thread....

Yep, this "new" ski area still remains on private property only with no lifts installed... I heard at one point they were taking people up in cats when the conditions were good, but haven't heard much else as far as new updates.... It's a killer driving by everyday and seeing the trails cut, but starting to accept the idea that this new ski area may never be a reality.

  9. You'll get support on here... there are quite a few members in the Portland area.... (sorry, not me... I'm in Montana and ride in Idaho!) Where do we get gear? online.... ebay.... bomber... if you're lucky enough to get a custom board, you'll get info on that here... talk to www.oldsnowboards.com (that's his member name here too!) He's in that area and can certainly help you find gear. Won't you, Bryan? Where are you planning on riding? Look on here on the ride board for people.... it's a relatively small and tight knit community... I bet anyone would help you find what you need... Look on the wanted and for sale pages here too!

  10. Headed out here in a few... First time this season with kids in tow. Wish me luck! They are both pretty excited about the new chair on the beginner hill! And it would be so awesome if my 5 1/2 year old son can start to ski on his own this year. My knees and back can't handle it so much anymore!
